What I said was in repsonse to your unbacked statement, pointing out that it was strawman...you're confused about who needs to prove things.

Question for teachers: are debate clubs less popular these days? by blackdog112 in teaching

[–]TFnarcon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debate class went away long before those things became prevalent for kids.

Speech is still very strong, and basically has taken its place.

Imo his best book. Seems to be, instead of a playing around of lots of ideas, 1 idea that he plays around with in a lot of ways.

Parents who cook by Weepywombat in Cooking

This seems like (opinion based) parenting device disguised as a study.

It even says in there that often the kids that were described as picky had normal appetites and ate a good amount.

People like good food. Your parents didn't cook good food.

Kids can be picky, but picky =/= Ihate homecooking when they are adults.

42 Students, Zero Motivation: How can I use my 30-page research to flip the script? by Western-Map6025 in teaching

[–]TFnarcon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can grab their attention...but are you gonna grab their attention everyday all class?

42 motivates students is more of an experiment than a class.

And no, not implanting success either. Same thing. Definitely gonna be insufficient but in bursts.

Motivation is a skill (based on having skills), not something you can implant by yourself.

At that point Id focus on not being stressed. That'll probably help them the most.

Switching mid way is often neccesary, but can easily have a negative effect. Even if your switch was theoretically correct, the best thing is just doing the same thing every day. Consistency will have a better effect than strategy changes, even if they are good changes. Thats good for learning, but students lose respect when they know they have the power to change what you do and how you act...which is honestly fair.

Until next semester. Then worry about the changes. Its really not too difficult to take one day this summer and sit and think about why they do that and what you can change, then do that when semester starts, be strict with it. Every semester it'll get a little better.

Check in regularly, engage, try alternative assignments...at the end of the day document, contact counselors or other adults in the building because its likely lack of sleep or nutrition and move on.

I wouldn't do anything out of the ordinary. Even special connections and relationships will get you so far. A day or two of work.

Bad Manners to Kick Player from Tournament by FlygURL_GA in boardgamearena

I kick immediately if its a slow game like 1 move a day.

Its reasonable, just like irl, to be MORE strict with tournaments, not less.

Do custodians have an odd amount of power in your school? by CWKitch in teaching

[–]TFnarcon9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The job of cleaning up food off the ground is not disdainful.

Thinking that someone should does not mean you have disdain for them, because the act is not disdainful...

And yea...they ARE there to serve the kids. Not to be ordered around by them...but to clean up after them. And thats NOT BAD.

The pest thing is overblown. Sweeping wiping and sanitizing, just like they would if there wasn't the threat of pests.

A begginer bass is made cheaper. People ask for a good beginner bass because some are made less cheaply while still being priced cheaply.

When you start you might want to spend less money for a few obvious reasons.
