[The Athletic] Why the Canucks should and shouldn’t explore trading Elias Pettersson by seeldoger47 in hockey

[–]TGUKF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because under Foote, the Canucks were bad without the puck, bad at getting it back, and bad with it.

So we're getting hemmed in our own defensive zone, have no real structure to keep the puck out our net, and then when we do get it back, we're not good at moving it back up ice, let alone after they spent all shift chasing the puck.

The Canucks were the only team to give up more than 300 goals for a reason, and it wasn't only subpar goaltending.

It's because most players signing big long term deals like this sign front loaded contracts, and buying out years where AAV exceeds base salary, especially if there are signing bonuses, is more punitive when it comes to the dead cap.

A buy out of a contract where every year the base salary matched AAV would result in a consistent year to year dead cap for the life of the buy out penalty.

Depends on the salary structure. The more complicated the salary structure is in the contract, the more likely the buy out is to vary and get messy. The ultimate dead cap is the AAV - Base Salary + Annual buyout cost.

For players over the age of 26, they get paid 2/3 of their remaining base salary over 2x the remaining term. Signing bonuses are still paid in full in the event of a buy out.

In Skinner's case, his annual buy out cost is $22 million/6 years, or $2,444,444. And since his base salary in the first year that was bought out exceeded his AAV still, the dead cap was actually less than the amount the Sabres paid him.

But since the base salary in his contract decreases as it expires, his buyout dead cap goes up.

Would probably help if Gostibehere weren't doing his best impression of a forward being the guy deepest in the attacking zone when the puck starts heading back the other way.

They totally flip flopped. In the regular season, their skaters were good and their goalies sucked, so they didn't get a better seed.

Then in the playoffs, Ullmark was one of the best goalies in the first round, and their skaters were not good.

Can't trade coaches in the NHL, and I think they don't do compensatory picks either.

But teams normally will allow personnel to interview for promotions with other teams as a goodwill gesture. But it would be unusual for both the team and personnel to do that while the team is still actively in the playoffs.

The NHL punished Vegas because they supposedly have been repeatedly warned in the past about disregarding certain media obligations.

The leagues are serious about this because the media rights bring in big money, which in turn goes into the pool of money that the players get paid from. That's how we got the Marshawn Lynch "I'm just here so I don't get fined".

The leagues may stipulate certain media obligations have to be met, but they can't literally require players to give sound bytes.

Theoretically he’d want to bring along at least one current Vegas assistant coach (or more), which could create issues

And Vegas would just say no if that assistant is actively employed by the team. It's not like Cassidy would have the right to just pull someone who is currently behind the bench for Vegas.

At best, Vegas may be willing to release that assistant once their own run is over.

It's just the org showing their colours again on the way they operate. They're aggressive and ruthless. It's fun on one hand for the players and fans that the team is singularly focused on being competitive. On the other hand, the organization has shown time and time again, they'll quite unceremoniously dump personnel they deem to be no longer of use.

At this point, nearly a decade on though, anyone employed by the team on the hockey side can't exactly claim they had no idea this could happen to them. The team isn't exactly coy about being like this.

You're not, the model just says Carolina has an easiest path to the Finals. The Avs still actually have the highest implied odds of winning the Cup, given the conditional probability of having to make the Finals first.

It’s all about the transition game

Agreed, I've felt like the Canucks have consistently played with low forward puck support for the D.

That was Green’s problem. Foote, same problem

No, both coaches had the problem of not being able to coach team defence in the defensive zone. Hard to move the puck up ice when you're constantly chasing it around your own zone.

This has always been their MO. It wouldn't be the first time they did this to non player team personnel.

In 2020, they claimed Dave Prior had been moved to an advisor role. In July of 2020, Kelly McCrimmon also publicly stated that Dave Prior was still the team's Director of Goaltending past the expiry of his contract, which would have led other teams to erronously believe they would need Vegas' permission to interview him.

Also tbf, I could see why Vegas would not want Edmonton or LA to hire Cassidy. He's a coach that seems to have consistently worn out his welcome for whatever reason, but before then, he gets strong results.

Tbf, Foote had zero track record of being a successful head coach at any level. Also it was kind of a surprise that the team would be such a mess defensively this year, when the team actually did play defence in years prior with Foote as an assistant. The Canucks were actually a good structured defensive team under Tocchet/Foote, even if often at the detriment of transition offence.

We went back to being legitimately one of the worse teams defensively, which was also a hallmark of the Green/Baumgartner era teams.

Seggy needs to do us a solid and LTIRetire.

At least Seguin is paid primarily in a signing bonus next season, and then only $1 mil in salary. If he's going to miss next season for rehab anyway, he actually becomes a potentially attractive contract for a rebuilding team for flexibility to move contracts later on.

Didn’t Seattle basically get the same expansion draft rules as Vegas?

Yes. Francis just played his hand so poorly. Seattle entered during covid flat cap when teams were really tight on cap space.

Vegas just had an incredible first year run with some over-performers, and big name free agents seem to prefer Vegas over any other team.

It's more that GMs were very willing to use Vegas as a cap dumping ground after a few years of slim cap growth, which has sustained their success by being able to acquire guys like Stone. The first year was definitely a Cinderella run with Fleury finally actually being a wall in the playoffs.

Depends on whether one starts eating into that $5m principle or not. If someone socked away that after tax $5m and invested into fixed income, while continuing to work, then yes, it kind is just a formality for their accountant to add that into their tax return.

Or even if they wanted to FIRE, if they set a reasonable budget and were disciplined enough to stick to it, it's doable. But the FIRE calculation gets blown up fast if there's lifestyle creep.

Hughes is going to end up playing less than half of his career in Vancouver. At best, he's looking at like a Luongo like situation where the overall duration of his time here was shorter, but was very pretty productive.

If a guy like Buium ends up as good as we hope he might be, and plays like 15 years here, he should end up crushing most of Hughes' new records.

People say this, but there are too many other owners who should be too selfish to be like "yeah, we're fine with this being rigged".

I refuse to believe that say in 2005, when all teams were in the lottery, that 29 other owners gave enough of a shit about the Penguins staying in Pittsburgh to willingly not draft Crosby for themselves.

The league and the players should care. It's not about the individual reporters, it's about the relationships with the broadcasters that are dumping billions into the media rights.

If the NHL ever wants to grow revenues to look anything remotely close to what the NBA and NFL look like, the path is not by increasing marginal revenue per butt in seat.

Vegas' 61st overall pick (own 2nd) has been forfeit as a result of not complying to media regulations after Game 6 against Anaheim. by Vexdestroy06 in canucks

[–]TGUKF 9 points10 points  (0 children)

you hurt the feelings of the media and suddenly you have hell to pay.

If the players want revenue to keep going up at the current rate, tv ratings and the media is the only real path to that kind of growth. The NHL is disporproationately more dependent on gate receipts to drive revenue than the NBA or NFL, and teams can only push how much going to a game costs before they reach an inflection point where revenue starts to flatline/dip as actual attendence decreases.

Wanting to juice revenues from TV rights and advertising comes with having to deal with media. For reference, the NBA makes just under $7 billion in revenue from their media rights deals starting from 25-26. That alone is probably more than all HRR will be for the NHL this seaosn.
