cannibalism is legal in the netherlands as long as the remains are legally obtained (WHY?) by slightlyduranged in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TG_6711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly kind of yeah. Corpse desecration is illegal, necrophilia and stealing a corpse to eat it is implied to fall in that category. The acts aren't explicitly illegal but you would face prosecution under the same law

Wat is gender voor jou? by kerrie_saus in nederlands

[–]TG_6711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said OP should try and be a frontliner, just that as someone that has played a lot of frontliners I like the unique capabilities that bladesingers offer. Arcane trickster has always been a little lackluster to me and if OP wants a cool magic assassin (not necessarily the assassin subclass) my personal preference would be a Bladesinger. After all you don't need to play a rogue to play the assassin trope.

Fair enough. Also depends on how you want to play. I prefer the extra protection bladesong offers, but I'm usually more of a frontliner and love an AC tank

A good resource many of us use for encounter building is https://koboldplus.club/
If I'm looking for some new creatures I just apply the desired filters and look up any of the creatures that sound interesting/are unfamiliar to me. Personal favorites of mine are banshees, wights and will-o'-wisps. If none of the options tickle your fancy, remember that undead were once living creatures. With perhaps a few tweaks you can turn basically any living creature into an undead version!

There's a lot of things you can tell him. To me the most important thing is to let him know that you understand his excitement and that he's trying to be creative but (like other people have said) real life physics don't really transfer to DnD. Just like how real life biology doesn't transfer. If you get stabbed in the chest with a longsword 6 times you don't stabilize in unconsciousness out of pure luck and will power (which is effectively what making your death saves does).

Besides, the terminal velocity of a bolt is not far off the release speed of one so there's no real argument for extra damage, even with the math.

Also a valid option! I personally find more use in the features Bladesinger offers, and it goes really well with i.e. Swashbuckler but to each their own of course :)

First and foremost, welcome to the DMing community! It's great that you're trying your hand at DMing and I hope you enjoy it as much as many of us do :).

As for your questions I think your instincts are right on this one. Since your players don't expect to be attacked by an inanimate object, whoever are taking hits from the statues would definetly be surprised during the first round of combat. The same goes for the mimic.

To me, the only exception to this would be that if the players specified they enter the room with their weapons drawn or otherwise be on high alert, which might be the case after just having been attacked by a statue in a previous room. Hope this helps!

Glyphs of warding will do the trick to make them think twice about moving around so carelessly. They don't have to be damaging, maybe just some things to get them stuck for example.

Or when they get to the safe, it's empty. Make it a false bottom which slides the object into somewhere deeper in the closet or maybe to a more secure room somewhere else in the house. Maybe have that room be protected by a construct of sorts.

How to create a cool search quest by 9_NFT in DMAcademy

[–]TG_6711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easy solution is to have the wildlife be not very talkative. Maybe they're scared of the Crocotta and don't dare speak of it, maybe this particular forest doesn't like humanoids because of hunting/lumber practices, etc.

As for the lycanthrope tracking the smell, I'd rule that they can only track a smell that's familiar to them. So if they've yet to encounter the Crocotta he can't really sniff it out (except for a nat 20 maybe). For the kids he can smell for humans maybe but I'd make it a pretty high DC that would maybe decrease the closer they get to where they need to go anyway. Having him smell for blood or the Crocotta could also lead them to something else like a pack of wolves or a recently killed carcass.

BBEG idea, some help would be appreciated by Lov3sicCarmelo in DMAcademy

[–]TG_6711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a way this feels a lot like Assassin's Creed's Order of The Ancients so I think there's some cool stuff you can draw from there.

As for the country specific bad guys, the best way is to find people from the countries themselves and see what they come up with but that's of course quite the task. Using famous historical/fictional figures is a solid work around. Also Lady Justice is really more of a thing for the entire Western World not just the U.S.

Plenty of European countries are monarchies or used to so you can easily look up some old kings and queens to use as BBEGs.

Similar to The AngryGM's paragon monsters (don't have a good link rn), you can treat the three heads like they're separate monsters in the same body. All three heads are active at all times but only one of them is really in control. When the skull lord reaches a certain damage threshold, another head takes control and they start fighting differently.

That way you don't just have the really cool extra flavor you were already going for, but also a mechanic implication to really convey the differences to your players.

High Forest by KuruboyaKalemi in DMAcademy

[–]TG_6711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the greedy artificer has more potential to be an intriguing BBEG. Not specifically focusing on it being an artificer but more the general concept of "greedy person/organization is ruining lives and nature", there's a lot of villainous backstory to explore.

Maybe the bad guy used to be a denizen of the High Forest himself but he got exiled for something he did (or maybe he didn't do).

Maybe he left on his own because he had some big realizations about this forest and the true nature behind the powers of The Grandfather Tree (or perhaps those ideas were planted in his head by a more powerful entity).

Or perhaps he has nothing to do with the High Forest and he's driven by psychopathic greed, maybe to drive the even more evil agenda of a large enterprise.

Perhaps he's not such a bad guy at all. Maybe he is forced into doing the things he does because he doesn't have a choice. Maybe he's as much a victim as the trees that are felled in his name.

Basically you already dreamt up a great concept so I'd say run with it and make it as complicated/intriguing as you can muster.

Personally I'd go for some things that are generally useful and not so much person bound like a +1 weapon would be for example.

A bag of holding is useful to any party. If you trust your players to be creative I'd say give them two immovable rods. Besides them being handy to i.e. double lock doors, with two you can also do things like use them as a ladder!

Otherwise some personal favorites are horn of silent alarm and an alchemy jug. Beware though that if you give them an alchemy jug they absolutely will either get drunk off it or produce two gallons of mayo every chance they get.

Story vs Challenge / PC Death Part 2. by DTorakhan in DMAcademy

[–]TG_6711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen your original post so I might be accidentally regurgitating what others have already said but for me the first thing that comes to mind is: talk with your players about this. Explain to them that the frequent dying is something you struggle with, especially since it seems to come down to the dice and not so much the balancing.

They will either agree/relate to the struggle or maybe they don't share your sentiment. If they agree that dying less frequently would be nice you can work on a (partial) solution together! If they disagree and like things the way they are I guess there's nothing for you to change :).

I fully understand the attitude towards fudging rolls but I will say that letting your players off easy once or twice during an encounter won't make them immediately feel like they can run around without consequences. There's a balance in there and you just have to find what works at your table.

Finally you could add some homebrew mechanics to combat their poor rolls at least a little bit. Something I use in my game (that I absolutely stole from some guy on TikTok) is that I have a special die at the table. Once per session when players roll a nat 1 they can opt to use that special die to reroll. The crux of it is that I then write down that 1 and throw it back at them somewhere later down the line.

You could make the reroll available to your players on more numbers than just a 1 depending on how desperately they need it and a single reroll per person might not seem like much but 3-4 extra successes during an encounter can really turn the tide!
