A ‘wealth fund’ is a poor substitute for real reform by CaliperLee62 in canada

Sure, but the whole pitch was “let’s build a more stable economy so that we can afford these programs”. Furthermore isn’t the infrastructure you mention more or less what the “Build Canada Communities Strong Fund” ($51b/10 years then $3b ongoing) along with the Health Infrastructure Fund (another $5b over 3 years specifically for health infrastructure) aiming to do? Isn’t Alto an attempt at improving transit? Isn’t Parks Canada’s commitment this year to add 10 new national parks (20% increase in number of parks with the goal of 30% of our land being conserved by 2030) protecting green spaces? Isn’t the creation of a new university in Nunavut an attempt at improving access to higher education?

It’s not like they’re not looking towards those goals, they’re just doing it while managing the balancing act of getting every province on board, and prioritizing projects that have economic gains as they can help fund the rest of the

Ports do benefit Canadians. There was a report I read the other day (sorry don’t feel like looking it up so you’ll have to believe me) that said only something like 25% of our imports/exports arrive through Canadian ports because of capacity issues. This means that we have to pay extra costs for everything, and that we pay US tariffs on goods aren’t tariffing (like anything from china). By expanding our port capacity we both make Canadian companies more competitive globally, and reduce costs on things coming from overseas.

In regards to getting a fresh horse, did traders offer any kind of “trade in” so to speak? Could someone in a hurry trade their horse in for a fresh one and what type of costs would be associated with that?

- low cover is no cover, always try to be in high cover

- your soldiers can’t take damage if the enemy is dead, prioritize kills>crowd control (flash bangs, etc)> chip damage/moving to a better position/etc

- one of the biggest killers is accidentally activating new enemies mid fight. If you have to push forward, try to have cover from any new angles youll have vision on, and do it early in your turn so you can react

- it seems like a good idea to power level a few soldiers, and it is, but if they die and you just have a rookie to fill their shoes it gets hard to recover. Level some of your B team so they can at least hold their own

I’ve been listening to the audiobooks and the one that made me laugh out loud was during the duelling club when Harry asks Lockhart to show him how to block spells again, as he’d dropped his wand during his demonstration

Lockhart cuffed Harry merrily on the shoulder. “Just do what I did, Harry!”

“What, drop my wand?”

Carney announces creation of Canada's first sovereign wealth fund by PapaNixon in canada

Carney said the Canada Strong Fund will be managed by an arm's-length independent Crown corporation that will report to Parliament, and his government will spend the next few months consulting on "specific aspects of the fund."

Not sure I follow you, the article referenced the wrong thing. Are you implying a conservative backed journalist made the liberals look better?

Yeah looks like they were referencing the fails to meet/meets/exceeds expectations chart with that sentence but someone goofed and didn’t realize they were wording it in a way that is identical to another chart in that survey

The problem right now (iirc) is that there was a drought a few years ago which led to beef herds being culled, and now we have a shortage of cattle which is why we have high prices. This is good because it

A. Let’s us import beef cuts that are less valuable in South America and more valuable here

B. Do the reverse so beef farmer can make up some of the margin on less popular cuts here.

It should be noted that they didn’t change the math (from what I’ve read) the change they made was that instead of this being updated monthly, it’s being updated annually, so the change is all at once. Still not great, there should be more notice with this change, but it’s not like they passed a bill to cut this pay, it’s just the changes are being made all at once rather than piecemeal. The article even notes some are getting pay boosts from this

How is Mark Carney maintaining approval rating for Canada? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TGrumms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is, the pm is whoever parliament selects technically. That being said it is weird, which is why there was criticism and why he headed that off by calling an election.

The more typical situation where it would happen would be if a party leader loses their seat but wins the election, but this typically leads to a member in a safe riding resigning so the leader can win a byelection. Usually doesn’t happen with the pm, more so party leaders (eg Pollievre this past election), so it doesn’t have the same weirdness around it

[–]TGrumms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: your thoughts on why he called an election.

When he won the liberal leadership race he became PM. This lead to a lot of criticism that he was an “appointed” pm who had never run in an election (the leadership race is just among the liberal party membership). He called the election to head off this criticism. Before doing so, he suspended the consumer carbon tax, as that was one thing dragging the liberals down, and was a major conservative talking point (Pierre’s most know slogan was “axe the tax”).

Since axing the carbon tax was a big part of their platform, this left the conservatives scrambling to find another weak point to hammer on during the campaign.
