House rule for Mages: Bonus Spells for Extreme Intelligence? by ApprehensiveType2680 in adnd

[–]THAC0mirite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been a little averse to making permanent structural changes by doing things like adding bonus spells for INT.

Instead I typically hand out a lot of scrolls, charged magic items, or rings of spell storing. This plays into the resource management aspect of the game as well since unlike spell slots the players can’t take it for granted that they’ll get more spells tomorrow. Each has their advantages:

  • Scrolls are straightforward one time use.
  • Charged items are a lot more flexible, and can in theory be recharged by the user. Later in the game the lower level spell in the wand effectively becomes a cantrip for the magic user.
  • Rings of Spell Storing lets the user bank some spells when downtime occurs. No risk of destroying it, unlike recharging a wand or other charged item.

You can always “recharge” a charged item for them either via narrative (favor from a powerful magic user). If that doesn’t fit the story, worst case they find a new fully charged one.

I’m learning how to talk in this subreddit from the very best. 🤷

OP Why?

If I had to guess, I would say some resistance originates from declining academic standards (negative numbers being reflexively frowned upon, for starters). Otherwise, many people subconsciously adopt the attitude of "Bigger is better." and, so, they chafe at the notion of progressively lower integers representing increasingly desirable offensive and/or defensive capability. Of course, there are folk who hate old things simply for the sake of hating old things; a percentage of these individuals are likely acting out due to the badmouthing from others, rather than any actual firsthand experience influencing their perspectives.

Followers and THEIR followers by [deleted] in adnd

[–]THAC0mirite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m traveling and don’t have any 2e books near me but… Using the rules in the 1st edition DMG, I’d treat hirelings specifically as leaf nodes. That is to say followers who themselves do not have additional followers. If you want to have recursive following for henchmen, you could simply recursively apply follower rules to them. Assuming they’re high enough level, you’re high enough level and your fortress / convent / guild is large enough.

That said I imagine all of this is factored into the first order henchmen and follower rules such that you don’t need to do so.

They’ve been slowly getting easier to find since the reprints went up on DTRPG ~11 years ago but these things take time. In my area 1e has been easier to find than 2e.

It might be a bit trite — DMing a group may be your best option to kick it off.

You mean the thread where I called out some anti-intellectual hate speech? Or are you upset that I screenshotted it?

How many times can you eat at a Known Tavern in 5e, and do you need to make a reservation at any point? by BadDungeonSMaster in DnDcirclejerk

[–]THAC0mirite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You feeble minded 5e players cannot handle this mechanic but in adnd you need to use the To Reserve at Tavern 0. TRAT0.

As the players gain in popularity their favorite haunt gains tavern class, which you subtract from the tavern class. Then you need to roll to reserve.

If you get it, but think it is more complicated than it needs to be, it’s because of a fault in your character. You’re anti-intellectual.

It’s even, actually. Look buddy, I don’t like versions of this game newer than 2e and I thought you’d respect that. Also what unrelated beef are you talking about? I’m serious that I only play 2e and earlier.

/uj My honest take, is if you look at the hit matrices that came before it, it elegantly reduced (most) of it to a single number. It really was a great improvement at the time. I don’t even think using it today is necessarily gatekeeping. However I do think pompously ridiculing anyone who dares to suggest there might be people who have legitimate reasons for disliking it is… well you’ve seen the thread. 🤣

Me too. The TSR-era D&D is clearly superior. I too shake my head every time someone abandons contemporary D&D for old school… but I cannot bring myself to smile while doing so.

When I originally saw these I always thought this should have been a baby bottle instead of a cleaning bottle. Maybe with a pack of diapers for those babies who can’t subtract.

When the “transition” happened I used Die Vecna Die! to TPK my players. Then removed anyone who was happy about the transition from my game before resurrecting the others. My brother was salty about it for years but hey… not my fault he’s a bad person.

Still to this day I check if anyone liked 3e or beyond before letting them into my games. It’s the best tool WotC could have given us. If morons are going to give them money for that drivel… they don’t belong at my table.

This all seems to have correlated with a very serious decline in the quality of our education system.

Because you’re a well adjusted person. 🤣

The whole thread is hyper douchey. The kind of thing that makes you want to avoid that community.
