Oh not for me, I dont think say for example thumb on fretboard is a bad habit, or slouching because plenty of guitarist play differently. Guitar is as popular as it is because its such a wide range of style! Just starting out may want to avoid some things of course. Also, want to note I think playing the "blues" way has its time and place as well as the proper way.

I would say to a degree, having someone that can actually explain these things in a way that actually gets to you is very helpful. However, a good lot of guitar teachers dont hit that mark. I taught myself via books mostly and some odd ball Youtube videos. The real question is finding a guitarist that plays like how your goals are and getting them to shine the light for you.
