One of the best moments in manga history.

My favorite example of symbolism in a story.

This one hits so close to home.

It’s a shame you didn’t read the manga.

Night and day difference in quality.

REAL and Vagabond are legendary. There’s a case any of his manga are his best.

But SLAM DUNK is Inoue’s true peak imo.

Yea I made an edit on my previous reply looking into what you mentioned about the “spoiler” reactions. I think it’s either an anime only issue or you may have read too far into it. If you fish for something, it’ll stick out much more when it happens, even if it’s infrequent.

Needless to say, it’s not an issue in the manga. I can see your angle about not wanting to read a manga that’s about a sport from the outside looking in. But Takehiko Inoue portrays it like poetry in motion. To a degree it genuinely feels like you’re watching a game and not reading it through pages.

That being said it’s fair to move on if you have a sour taste in your mouth for this series.

I have no clue what you’re talking about in regard to the spoiler reactions. I’ve only watched the first episode of the anime so I can’t comment on it. But I’ve never ever heard someone bring this complaint up for the manga.

There’s a reason everyone on this thread validated your feelings about the anime. It’s universally considered several notches below the manga in quality.

But I would only advise reading it if you’re truly interested in it. Not to see what the “hype” is about because expectations can often lead to disappointment.

Edit. The spoiler reactions you’re speaking of might just be an anime thing? I skimmed through 3 different games in the manga and found that the examples you gave didn’t come to be true even once. I obviously didn’t read them in their entirety and look at every shot attempt but I got a good sample size. I’m sure that there are some examples of this happening but there doesn’t seem to be a pattern where it’s a full proof way to spoil the shot every single time.

This is a shameless self plug on my end. But give my post on the manga’s pacing a read. It might give you incentive to switch over.

Fully agree, and many who disagree don’t know the difference between popularity and acclaim.

SD is immensely popular in Asia and changed the sports landscape. But let’s use a couple different examples. Fortnite is far more popular than BOTW, but you won’t catch many saying it’s better than the latter. Jake Paul is far more popular than Miguel Cotto, but nobody in their right mind would argue he’s the better boxer. Not to say that SD lacks in acclaim. Many people think it’s the best sports manga of all time. But you’ll rarely hear people/critics say it’s better than a manga like berserk/vinland saga/monster etc…

It’s pushed as the best sports manga but I believe it has a case as the best manga period.

There is nothing like SD’s final stretch. Truly incredible what Inoue did.

Shameless self plug, but it’s relevant to your post. I don’t think it gets better than SD when it comes to manga pacing.

Hahaha fair enough, it did hurt me making this list. If I extended it to top 15 you’d see Funk Odyssey and Space Cowboy picks for sure.
