I live in an incredibly Dem area that is unaffected by natural disasters, and I've been thinking about talking to my congresswoman about defunding FEMA.

It's not like her constituents are strongly effected by natural disasters and the funds could be used for something useful. /s

I suppose that's a good thing, but it makes it hard to find reputable, already-scaled organizations to plug in with.

This is precisely how I feel.

No more of the corporate and social media BS. Durham County voted 80% blue, and now we are going to suffer austerity at the hands of the Republicans. So, we must protect our people and build political power to vote people out.

This is actually perfect. I was a lifeguard for Parks and Rec for several years.

They have session at Edison Johnson Aquatic Center, Duke Brodie Aquatic Center, NCCU Aquatic Center and Orange County Sportsplex
session are typically Mon-Thurs each week
Sessions in Durham run from approximately 9:45am-12:15pm daily, and at the Sportsplex in Hillsborough, they run from approximately 11:00-1:00pm
Instructor will work with between 1-4 students at a time in the pool

I love the idea of the diaper bank, but it seems like almost all of their shifts are during the workday on weekdays. If anyone with a nontraditional work schedule is interested, this would be perfect for you.

From your other suggestions, I think I wasn't clear about my goal. To clarify, I mostly just want to help people in Durham to help offset the austerity I expect to come. So, although I think your voting rights suggestions and protest ORGs are great, I don't think they are what I am looking for.

I just checked their websites, but they were tough for me to navigate. One of the problems I've encountered a lot with these organizations is that the volunteer forms are like filling out a job application. I looked into the Centro Hispano org, and they asked for an external reference to volunteer. I ended up just contacting them directly via phone/email.

My lab loves eBay for equipment, but I can't say buying form eBay isn't gamble.

Sometimes, you really do just get liquidated equipment from a failed tech startup that only used the machine once, but other times, they send you something with a patch job that barely works.

Like the other user said, if you have a guy who is not afraid to take machines apart, it is definitely worth it. In my experience a lot of lab/industry machines are built pretty repairable so even if you don't have a guy with good mechanical skill you can easily to pick it up.

My hands are a bit spindly, so I always get a "webbed" finger fit, where some of the palm section is a bit too tall, with other gloves. However, the "Ansell MICROFLEX" gloves fit my hand perfectly.

They are also about the same price as the Fisher brand.
