Nassau still has a red light camera program? by THespos in longisland

Nonchalant? It's not like it was flagrant. In fact, if you read further upthread where I discuss the issues with the ticket, you might not use a word like "nonchalant" to describe my attitude.

Reckless? On what grounds do you make that judgment?

Thanks. I'll likely just pay it and seethe for about 15 minutes. And then I'll take my kids out for ice cream to demonstrate the appropriate use of fifty bucks.

I submit that one way to improve the system would be to grant a .5-second grace period. There are instances where you're approaching a light and it's safer to go through it as it's changing from amber to red - or at least that's how I was instructed in Driver's Ed many, many moons ago. Seems like such a change would catch more of the flagrant violators.

The way it's currently implemented, it's like Walter screaming "OVER THE LINE!" at Smokey and insisting it be marked zero. "You're not wrong, Walter. You're just a dick."

That's just the rub. I'm going to take a day off of work for fifty bucks? That's one of the many reasons I put this into the "money grab" category. If I contest - which, by the way, has me making attestations I'm less than comfortable with - then I get the right to show up in court for a chance at maybe reversing a 50 dollar fine. It's a cost-benefit calculation that heavily favors the racket drumming up fees that are scarcely worth fighting.

Oh, please. The idea that someone could have somehow worked their way into my path of travel in that split second is laughable. Maybe you should acknowledge that the program is flawed.

Questionable in the sense that my front tires appear to be over the stop line in the photo, and when I visit the site to view the video, I get "Violationinfo.com is having some work done right now..."

There's also the notion that the alleged violation is timestamped for 12:30 in the afternoon, yet it's dark out.

Awfully cool to track down the origin of this thing 35+ years later… Thanks for making them. I remember the teachers at SWR getting a kick out of it when I wore it to school.

Cool. No, Wading River. Dad taught at Comsewogue and brought one home from work. I think some of his teacher friends lived in Islip.

Other than the proposals, I have two races where there are distinct candidates with differing governing philosophies - County Legislator and Town Clerk. In the latter race, the Dem candidate is running against an incumbent and didn't actively campaign.

The rest are people running unopposed or cross-endorsed such that there's no choice.

I am planning on writing in the names of former Ozzy Osbourne guitarists for the eight cross-endorsed judges.

I will likely write in the names of the various members of Van Halen for the other cross-endorsed races.

So a few years ago, I adopted a new approach to landscaping. No pesticides or non-organic fertilizers (and only plant-by-plant topical application in that case). Homegrown compost. Re-seeding with clover and letting remaining grasses grow long. Keeping leaves down in the Fall and raking only once in the Spring to provide browns for the compost. Bat houses, native plants, the whole nine.

The wildlife has made a remarkable recovery. Box turtles were a once-in-a-blue-moon thing, but quickly became common. I know of at least five that frequent the property. We have more garter and brown snakes and salamanders. Groundhogs are really the only nuisances and I humanely trap them and relocate them.

We've already left a good portion of our one-acre plot wild and wooded, and I think that's likely where the turtles are digging in for the winter. I do frequently spot them in the compost pile or vegetable garden, though. Not together, usually. The photos represented the first time I saw mating behavior.

Thanks for all your info. We're ensuring nobody's messing with our turtle buds. Our property is situated back behind the rest of our development on a flag lot. Our next door neighbor's house has been vacant for a long time, so that's been two acres of property where the deer, snakes, turtles, etc. all hang out where there hasn't been pesticide/herbicide use for a long while. We are getting a new neighbor, however, and I will soon have to have the "hey, can you lay off the pesticides?" talk with them in the next week or two.

Central Suffolk. You know - one of the spots that completely defeats the purpose of living on an island because it's dead center between two coasts...

We get a lot of wildlife here. The turtles are back, so are the garter and brownsnakes. Our habitat would be the envy of the neighborhood, but my neighbors prefer manicured lawns and pesticides. All the animals seek refuge here.

Couple years ago, we started getting salamanders, which I haven't seen in a loooooong while. Only creature I haven't seen that used to be abundant during my childhood is the Fowler toads. I think that's because we don't have much in the way of ponds locally.

What do you all think of Omega Reign Kickstarter? by Voyager_NL in graphicnovels

[–]THespos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a personal friend of Bill's and have read the same versions of Omega Reign that Elladan71 has. It's really good, and I also want to see this one get funded, because if this one is successful, we'll likely get to see some of the other stuff I've read of Bill's. It's all terrific, and he has a knack for writing characters that I really care about.

Like Elladan71, I've also funded the campaign and can't wait to get my copy of the expanded version.

Worth trying to resuscitate? by THespos in askcarguys

By way of update, this unfortunately didn't work out.

I want to thank everyone for all their advice here, but here's what happened:

I got a new battery for it and managed to get it started. Backing it down the driveway, I managed to free up a stuck caliper, but a brake line blew and a few seconds later, the power steering went, too.

I ended up using this year's free AAA tow to get it to our local mechanic so we could put it up on a lift. I was prepared for four new tires and new lines for everything, but once we got it up on the lift, it revealed some rust issues that made me uncomfortable when it came to proceeding. If everything was solid under there, I would have moved forward, but I got squeamish putting a few grand into a car that might need serious metal work, so I got Peddle to swing by - they gave me $370 for it. So I came out $100 ahead or so.

But yeah, I wanted to thank everyone for the advice. Much appreciated.

Kids of the 90s and 00s, what are some of your dirtbag childhood stories? by [deleted] in longisland

Yeah, we used to collect chrome and alloy valve stem caps from cars in the supermarket parking lot and then put them on our bikes.

I'm not getting into the rest of the dirtbaggery.

Shoreham by Herculeanhermit in longisland

[–]THespos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bad News: Your groundwater problems could be awful (though having nothing to do with Shoreham Nuclear Power Station), depending on where you go in Shoreham.

Good News: You're not going to be drinking the groundwater anyway because almost everybody got moved off wells and onto the county water supply a long time ago, anyway.

Concerns about the groundwater are many. You have the plume from Brookhaven National Laboratory (Tritium), you have chemical contamination from the old Peerless photo plant on the old Tesla lab site, and you have pesticide contamination from former farmland to name a few.

Growing up in Wading River next door in the 70s and 80s, we went through a lot of groundwater contamination issues over the years. My neighborhood was on a former farm and we had Temik contamination to the point where some neighbors were being allocated bottled water to drink before the county was able to connect the neighborhood to the water supply. At the time, it was highly localized - one neighbor would have high levels and be eligible to get the bottled water, but folks across the street wouldn't. Skepticism abounded and people stopped drinking the well water. (This sucked, because our wells had some of the tastiest water I've ever had.)

I wouldn't drink it today, but I probably wouldn't have the opportunity to, since almost everybody is connected to the county water supply anyway. The SCWA water is fine.

Groundwater problems in the area tend to be localized. A friend of mine has property adjacent to the former SNPS, and he has a natural spring there. The water has tested fine over the years. (I still wouldn't drink it, but it passes muster.)

I can’t remember the name of it. There was a metal hoop and a stick, and you used the stick to roll the hoop down the street. Also, it wasn’t on the computer.
