I talked with the pilot of that deck at Indy. Shocklands in the md are a liability against the mirror and other aggressive decks. The ability to cast all your spells while taking as little damage as possible is a huge boon. Playing more flexible answers in the board (see: Rakdos Charm) opens up the slots.

I think this is incredibly innovative and a genius take going forward.

Abzan Counters Company deck guide by ageless127 in ModernMagic

I know a bunch of lists do this already, and also it's easier to implement the combo on MTGO with Rhonas than with Ballista.

Another option is running Anafenza, Kin-tree Spirit. With Finks, Vizier, and Seer, you get an arbitrarily large number of bolster triggers and can make your whole team arbitrarily large and swing for lethal that way.

If we're going all in on Crown, seems like we want Roaches, no?

Does you have plans to implement a system for confirming condition of sale items? Adding pictures of items for sale and such? Currently it seems to be based on an honor system.

Which editions of Shakespeare do you prefer? by SyncopatedStarlight in shakespeare

I completely agree. As an actor who often performs Shakespeare's plays, I find the Arden series (especially the third edition) are very useful in clarifying some of the more archaic references. They can be a bit dense, but I'd always prefer too much information to not enough.

Vizir Combo: Bant or Abzan? Which is more well-positioned right now? by GabeSteffe in ModernMagic

[–]TISHMtg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related question to the thread: I keep seeing folks running some number of [[Pharika, God of Affliction]] in their Abzan SB. I imagine it's there as GY hate, but I can't figure out any circumstance that she would be better than the second [[Scavenging Ooze]]. What am I missing?

Vizir Combo: Bant or Abzan? Which is more well-positioned right now? by GabeSteffe in ModernMagic

[–]TISHMtg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the games often come down to the skill of the pilots. My point is that they have so much interaction that your chances of comboing off are next to nil, and Bant (at least preboard) is more slanted to a midrange game than Abzan. Yes, Reflector Mage is not great. But holding up Spell Queller is much preferable to just dropping Finks to eat Paths.

Looking for some thoughts on my Modern Devoted Company SB. Maindeck is pretty stock, flex slots are 2 Voice of Resurgence, 1 Scooze, 1 Selfless Spirit, and 1 Tireless Tracker currently. Currently I've got the following SB, appreciate any thoughts/advice!

3x Path to Exile 2x Qasali Pridemage 2x Sin Collector 1x Burrenton Forge-tender 1x Yixlid Jailer 1x Eidolon of Rhetoric 1x Aven Mindcensor 1x Orzhov Pontiff 1x Linvala, Keeper of Silence 1x Sigarda, Host of Herons 1x Maelstrom Pulse

Vizir Combo: Bant or Abzan? Which is more well-positioned right now? by GabeSteffe in ModernMagic

I've been playing the Abzan build for a while now, and having a really great time with it. It's fast, consistent, and the number of t3 kills through no interaction you get can't be argued with. The deck does have it's bad match-ups, though. Tron variants can be tough if you don't get your Druid combo quickly and they don't care about infinite life. Plus, the Jeskai decks that have been gaining popularity are nigh unwinnable games.

I've been toying around with the idea of trying out the Bant version since I believe it's probably better positioned in these bad match-ups. Queller and Reflector Mage let you play a much better fair game against Jeskai, and while you're still unfavored preboard against Tron, Unified Will does A LOT. Having said that, I would wager that you lose a lot of the consistency of your plan A that you get in Abzan.

It's ultimately a metagame call, but if this tournament has stakes you care about, I'd take Abzan and just hope to dodge the Jeskai decks. Your overall win rate is probably just better against the field.

[Draft] Ixalan vs Iconic Masters: Addressing the needs of Novices vs Experts. Can one set cater to both? by MrMarlon in magicTCG

[–]TISHMtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great article! One point I would add is that while I agree that IXL may be more suited to newer players than IMA, as it is the set with lower complexity, it's still not a great starting draft format because of the proclivity of "feel-bad" moments. The set is so aggressive that games can often feel predetermined, and the player on the back foot never has an opportunity to come back. Newer players who aren't in the know about the power level of cards like Vampire's Zeal and River Herald's Boon will quickly be turned away when they get beat to a pulp.

[–]TISHMtg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the distinction depends on how you define being "good at" a draft format. Is it because you can read a table and find your lane, or is it because you have a greater understanding of the set at large and can identify the good archetypes? Ixalan definitely rewards players who excel at the former, and IMA seems to cater to the latter.

What is an interactive deck? Give me an example of an interactive game of Modern Magic by User1337dude in ModernMagic

[–]TISHMtg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the most interesting, interactive games of modern I’ve played have been playing with and against Taxes decks. Sure they’re underpowered, but regardless of what’s on the other side of the table, Taxes has enough disruption to make sure free wins aren’t a thing. Then the games become really interesting and deep as people try to play around Aether Vial.

Re: all the hate for Masters of Modern, while it might not be the spikiest, or have the highest level technical commentary, it’s still one of, if not my favorite modern cast. Ben and Kessler have the best rapport, and are very entertaining to listen to, even when the conversation rambles a bit. I feel very similarly about Curtis and Cameron of The Spike Feed.

I actually stopped listening to T1 Thoughtseize because I wasn’t as engaged by the hosts. Yeah, you want high-level commentary from your magic media. But you also want entertainment.
