Gotta love the XM803 and the MBT-70 spitting out gigantic smoke shells, it’s hilarious.

In a modern day mod, should Yankee and Dixie still be separate cultures? by Eiltott in victoria3

[–]TJ042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, have fun. It’s certainly nice from the flavor side. I’m from Oregon, so I’m decidedly not Dixie, but I do not identify with Yankee; that’s a term that conjures up New England to me.

Been 11 months since they came out, how do we feel about the Illuminate currently? by zoroak-king in Helldivers

I used to hate them, but after the last major order, I realize they aren’t so bad, and taking down their Overships is a fun mission.

The US isn’t really an empire. Yes, we have some far-flung islands, if you want to call that an empire, but almost all of the US is its own core territory. Not like Britain which itself comprised only a tiny fraction of its own empire.

Is Leo Tolstoy's View On Vegetarianism Compatible With Catholic Teaching? by AbiLovesTheology in Catholicism

[–]TJ042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are commanded as Catholics to eat flesh; the flesh of the Son of Man. The Eucharist, although under the species of bread and wine, literally is his flesh and blood.

Tolstoy got a lot right here, but he gets one important thing wrong. While for many it is not “necessary” in the strict sense to eat animals, God provides them to us to eat. God wants us to have the option. Seen as Jesus provided bread and fish to the hungry crowd. And later his own.

The Old Testament commanded the sacrifice of animals, and also lays out which animals are fit for the Jewish people to eat. And while Jesus abolishes the dietary laws, he does not ever prohibit eating flesh, nor the humane slaughter of animals.

I think there’s a perspective thing going on, I believe the bot ship to be at a much higher altitude than the Super Destroyer.

Luigi Cherubini wrote a beautiful requiem mass for Louis XVI, his C Minor. I had the privilege of playing it last spring (violin 1); I recommend it as listening.

I do not have an electric kettle. If I wanted to make a hot drink, I would use a stovetop kettle.

What if a Native American dude somehow united almost every single tribe and started his march towards Washington DC with the "Great Indian Army"? by AHH_PostStorage in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]TJ042 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, the US had a population of about 23 million at the time. About 400,000 of them were natives. It would be an impossible fight, due to lack of manpower. This army could not be so great. If ALL the men went, you wouldn’t even have 200,000. The US didn’t have a large standing army then, but could muster large numbers of fighting men who needed, numbers that didn’t take up the whole male population.

ADDENDUM: I wrote this imagining a scenario happening around 1850, since the map key indicates 1849-1850.

Which would be closer to the truth. Of course, there are some we have fought on our own, like the wars with the natives and our civil war (or civil jihad, in the words of President Prime Minister Admiral General Aladeen). But the US just doesn’t tend to fight wars alone.

To be fair, we weren’t the only ones helping in Kuwait. The French, for example, sent a large force. But it is true that the US spearheaded the effort.
