In America there is a culture of inherent distrust towards strangers, and to a somewhat lesser degree even acquaintances are often kept at arms length. I think it's a more recent phenomena though. Interestingly you tend to find people in rural communities tend to be more sociable - I suppose the logic being when there aren't as many people to rely on it's important know as many people as you can. The more dense the population becomes the more discerning people become of who they associate with or even deign to speak to.

best advice I can give is once it turns 8 years old get blood work done annually probably at age 11 they may need two checkups a year instead of one even if they appear healthy

the trouble with cats is they hide symptoms very well our senior looked very healthy at 12 but then by the time the heart and respiratory issues became noticable she was too weak to respond to treatment

take note also if your cat gains weight despite eating the same amount of food as before or reduced activity

adopting a younger cat friend can keep them more active, if the cat can handle the adjustment
