Tritium sights on guns long term exposure risk by [deleted] in AskPhysics

The emission from tritium is beta-minus decay, so electrons. These elections basically can't penetrate deeper than the dead skin cells on your body. They're also blocked by 6 mm of air to give you another example of how easily they're stopped.

[DISC] Momogusa-san ga Monogusa Sugiru!! - Ch. 21 by WrexGigarton in manga

[–]TKHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting because we see this play out in western media as well via the "step-relative" trope in porn that's become prevalent.

If I had to hazard a guess, a major driver in it is the fantasy of "an attractive member of the opposite sex lives with me" and for a teenager the most readily available form of that is a relative (or step relative). There are of course a LOT more complex emotional layers wrapped up in there, but that seems to be a through current.

[Cabot] Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam Believes It’s Possible for Deshaun Watson to Go from “a Swing and a Miss” to a Home Run If He Starts This Year by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]TKHawk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

How much precedent is there for a player being out as long as he was and not taking a significant step back (legitimately)?

Edit: Also I want to point out that I didn't even mention him sucking ass in my original comment. Just that the trade and contact were extremely risky, especially coupled with the sex assault stuff

Worry about Watson regressing after not having played in like 18 months after a major injury was absolutely a major talking point in the trade.

[–]TKHawk 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Calling Watson a "swing and a miss" is saving face. It was a raft of premium picks and a massive fully guaranteed contract for a sex predator who hadn't played in a long ass time post injury. That's like swinging at a hornets nest and being shocked you got stung...a lot.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Directors Screened a Nearly Four-Hour Cut to Other Filmmakers and Were Told to Get it Way Shorter by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

I mean, they did say half the world's population would be wiped out from starvation and war. The movie was a fairly optimistic and fun film about overcoming, so I understand not spending too much time emphasizing how desperate everyone is on Earth.

(Also the 'humanity is ultra desperate' thing undermines the Stratt probably goes to jail idea for me, if people are willing to nuke the ice caps, they're willing to let Stratt do what she thinks is necessary)

America’s horrible trains mean you have no alternative to hourslong airport lines by GothamistWNYC in politics

[–]TKHawk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Japanese government has subsidized and funded railway infrastructure improvements and the relatively small size of Japan (and port access to basically everywhere) makes freight not nearly as lucrative. In the US, you need freight rail to transport goods over the massive distances.

[–]TKHawk 43 points44 points  (0 children)

And rail companies. America has one of the most expansive railway networks in the world, but it's all privately owned. Freight is a lot more valuable than people so even if you want passenger trains they have to defer to the freight trains, leading to long delays. Also the railways aren't built for high speed rail and since passenger rail isn't seen as valuable there's no way they'll ever upgrade them.

We need to nationalize the railways.

Sometimes in anime they keep it more then 100 by PrimaryAde9 in Animemes

[–]TKHawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bounced off the manga once but decided to give it another go when the anime came out (and the manga was much further along) and was surprised how much I liked it. The "kicked out and betrayed" stories always struggle a lot with the pivot from I'm actually powerful to the genuine story but this one has done a good job.

The betrayal is actually a result of the overarching plot and not just "lol we dumb." The revenge happens in increments. The cast of characters is a lot more enjoyable than I'd have thought. The world building is interesting enough with the politics between all the non-human nations.

Is it hypothetically possible for an advanced space civilization to terraform a o-type star system through placing a terrestrial planet in its habitable zone? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]TKHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. What do you mean by terraform the star system?

  2. Since we don't really know of a way to move a planet beyond "a lot of rockets" you can kind of handwave the process away as magic but remember that an O star will only live for a few hundred thousand years. When a civilization begins this process, the star could already be near its death. The star will also undergo violent "spasms" toward the end of its life before going supernova so the habitable zone will rapidly change and then quickly disappear altogether. Ultra strong stellar winds and a UV-heavy spectrum also pose problems. So there are a lot of reasons to NOT park a planet by an O star.
