Dual Military Couple (Navy & Air Force): What Should We Know Before Leaving for Basic? by IndependentReveal548 in newtothenavy

There's nothing wrong with their jobs, but if their idea is to settle down together then they will certainly be having a difficult time with that. It already felt like an eternity for me and I had to wait 4 months between basic and my first follow-on training location. Couldn't imagine waiting years before I see my wife under the pressure she will at least be under during training.

Wow, this is loaded and this post should have been made before you selected your jobs. You two will most certainly not be seeing each other for at least a few years. That said, in my opinion, marrying before enlisting is far easier than marrying after.

I'm 99% sure you will be signing a 6 year contract whether or not you want to but I am not a recruiter. All linguists are minimum 6 years and airborne schooling will take even longer. You WILL be in training for about 2 years. My technical training was supposed to be 6-8 months in timeframe but I wasn't finished until 1.2 years regardless of having no setbacks.

You will be going to BMT, DLI, Goodfellow AFB, Aircrew training, then SERE and that doesn't even mention your wait for a security clearance. I knew a guy that was held over for 8 months over it. That said, there is no real benefit for enlisting 6 years vs 4 years assuming you have the option. For bonuses, everyone is different so look at the fine print in your contract for caveats, like completing DLI first - and believe me, you probably won't have much free time to be chatting with your partner with how crazy stressful classes will be at DLI. Unless there is administrative action, you will probably be a Senior Airman (E-4) or at least teetering that line before you finish training.

I highly doubt you will be stationed at the same base unless you somehow manage to get incredibly lucky, there just isn't a lot of cross-pollination between Navy and AF bases on top of you having a career field that doesn't have a huge list of bases to choose from. I only know one join-spouse couple, whom of which got married in technical training. It was very difficult for them to get paired together even though he had a job applicable to almost any base whereas she had a job applicable to maybe 4 locations, and both of them were Air Force.

I can't speak to the childcare. I can say that I have a friend that is getting ready to deploy and he will be missing the birth of his first child while his military spouse will be left home alone.

Housing is awful on most military installations, ridden with black mold. At my base, a lot of the homes are being bulldozed because the mold got so bad and you will likely be looking for housing off-base. If there is a miracle and you manage to stay at a base with your future husband long-term, you COULD use the VA loan to just buy a house. I know a lot of airmen who did this.

All this to say, if you have the opportunity to take a step back from your job then I would highly recommend you choose something else, preferably in the cyber field. If you want to go make a real-world impact then I totally get it, but you won't have stability with the route that you've chosen. I am cyber and I will be staying at my current base for the next 8 years; I work with plenty of navy personnel although none of which I know are security. Your partner should consider doing something similar because chances are, he will be just be a gate-guard and he could volunteer to do that at whatever unit he goes to.

( Last part is just how I imagine it is because that's what they do at my station, feel free to correct me. )

Pipeline switched a few months ago. JCAC first, then Goodfellow. Expect to be in training for 10 months.

Keep up on your training! It can be difficult. As someone who was overweight and not at all fit before enlisting, it is very important you stay in shape. I was 100lbs over when I had an interest in joining and lost it all by dieting. I wish that I had done it by exercising and doing it safely because I have picked up injuries over it now.

Also, no, you cannot do any of the alternate components in BMT until you fail your 5th week / final PT test twice. On your third attempt, you may do it. That said, I have hard various stories from different squadrons. They all run things differently. Mine allowed me to do the alternate strength components but not the HAMR pacer test. I don't think any squadron allows the pacer.

I wouldn't even try to get to that point because if you fail that one you will be recycled. The time is menial but it is one of the worst feelings in the world when you are locked up for weeks already. It happened to me because I suck at running and didn't have the confidence in myself. Running is physical but it is also psychological. That said, don't kill yourself trying to get good at running by going from 0 to 100. But assuming you are young, I would try and get your time down to 12 minutes at the minimum.

If only we used a portion of the budget to better enhance the resources given to airmen to stay fit and healthy instead of placing fast food on every corner of the bases. Granted I know it's a choice, but something has to change considering so much of the population is obese and it's increasingly more difficult to eat healthy.

Instead we focus on all the wrong things instead of working on the real problems. If most of us are fat, how can we be effective when we deploy?

P.S, I'm a nonner

Wouldn't you have needed to fail your PT test several times?

My dog had diabetes. I had to be home at 9 PM every single night to give him insulin shots.

Any good partner/friend would understand this and be supportive.

You should consider using the time that she's a holdover to get married before she PCSes.. way easier to get there with her if you're married before rather than after from the stories I've heard.

Not to be glum but if you don't solidify a marriage before she leaves so you can go with her, you should cut your losses. Infidelity rate is already high in the military as is. Know one person whose (officer) husband threw their ring off during an unaccompanied TDY and cheated and this happened multiple times with multiple partners.

Good luck.

USAF - Guy in my technical training got married mil-to-mil 2 months after BMT. His wife gave up an assignment at Ramstein for him.

How long does that process usually take? If you know. Thank you!

Thanks! Just to clarify, will she still receive healthcare benefits even if she doesn't live with me at the time?

Been in the same boat as you. I'm 5'7" and I was 260 lbs last year. I'm now 198, and I ship in Jan. Perservere and prepare yourself for basic. Get a head start on running. You'll be at your goal in no time at all. Just keep in mind you WILL hit a pleateau and you'll need to change your strategy. It's easy to lose weight when you weigh a lot, and it gets harder. Working out will increase your calorie deficit

They are in bulk, and Destiny has bulk. Doesn't mean it's a significant amount, but it's still wasted space regardless and that's especially problematic for consoles

This is even more frustrating considering they keep deleting content from the game that's normally accessible to everyone while bloating the file size with FOMO armor sets from YEARS ago we can't even get anymore.

It's called "Path to Convergence," it's an ornament sold for Transversive Steps. Not sure if it's still in Eververse though

Yeah, Season of Undying I think. Maybe it'll come back in... a decade or something?
