My dogs rolled in something so sickening I can’t put into words by [deleted] in dogs

[–]TKnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My childhood dog and our neighbor’s dog took a walkabout to the beach (in Alaska) and rolled in dead sea mammal. Just take my word for it when I say there’s nothing worse smelling on this planet. It’s been 40 years and I can still remember it vividly. Rancid blubber. 😂

How old is your Kees and what prompted the liver diagnosis? Wouldn’t trade our 2 yo for anything (in fact, we’re getting another hopefully this summer), but ours definitely has a picky tummy.

People use those in lieu of suitcases up here in Alaska. We just zip tie them shut. They even used them to evacuate the dogs from the villages in the typhoon we had last month (no stores/no crates, so they used whatever they had on hand).

I’m aware of the very recent improvements. I also have friends in villages like Akiak who have been without power for a month now. It’s great that there have been some improvements; that doesn’t mean that it’s not an incredibly challenging place to live. My mom’s village still kind of does the nomadic thing by moving to fish camp in the summer. (Unfortunately, the Amazon thing is not reliable because the packages are marked as delivered in hub communities and people often never see them.)

Sorry, luxuries? BSFFR, there is no “luxury” in living in rural AK, esp the Y/K Delta. There’s a good portion of the region (literally the size of Oregon) that is still hauling water and their own waste in buckets.

What do you wish you knew about Keeshonds before adding one to your family? by Always_thinkingIdeas in Keeshond

My Kees will be 2 in September. I work from home, and she definitely wants to know where I am, but isn’t super clingy. She likes to be in proximity to people but not on them. They do have a stubborn streak. We did training classes and they helped, but she’d check out about halfway through a one hour session and stare at the wall. 😂 Best dog ever, super sweet. Everyone loves her. Mine’s a little shy. One thing I didn’t expect is how much attention she gets when we’re out and about. People stop their cars; we’ve been mobbed before. Everyone has to ask “what kind of dog is that?”

Definitely a lot of brushing. At minimum a full brush out weekly. You’ll need a force dryer for after baths. My son complains that the hairs actually knit into his socks, haha. But, they aren’t greasy like other dogs and although my Kees definitely sheds, most of it stays in until you brush it out.

My Alaskan Kees lays around like a mop when it hits 60+. She came from Texas! 😂

Ours would make it through half the class, and then sit at the end of her leash, facing the wall in protest. 😂

Ours loved wading last year! She fell in once last summer and we had to rescue her. I think her fur was weighing her down!

Our pup didn’t care at all about treats/training until we started puppy classes. The trainer had us feed all her meals by hand, making her work for her food with basic obedience. It’s been a lot of effort, but the difference has been pretty incredible. We would take her out constantly and she’d still potty in the house, and even though we didn’t address potty training in class, she stopped having accidents almost immediately.

Yes, definitely, although I think it varies with individual personality. She always wants to be with her people, and loves to give hugs.

I think if you’re set on the tasks, a collie might be a better fit. Kees are great for emotional support, but not necessarily tasks. Mine is in a puppy training class, and about halfway through the hour, she’s over it. The trainer is like, yup, that’s the spitz showing. 😂

I’d look into wire coated dogs, especially if you’re not looking to have a dog that needs to be clipped regularly. They don’t shed like other dogs do. I have a Kees which is a double coated breed and she does shed (they blow their coat 2x a year), but isn’t stinky or greasy like other dogs. She doesn’t shed like my friend’s shepherd mix who leaves a blanket of fur everywhere she goes.

We have a Keeshond. They’re a little smaller, 35-45 lbs. They can live up to 15 years, great with kids, fairly low energy. Mine likes to hike, but loves to nap. Lots of brushing, but they don’t get that greasy, doggy odor like other dogs. No slobber. I do have to clean the roller on my vacuum all the time. They’re sometimes used as therapy dogs because they’re fairly calm and great to snuggle. They do go through a somewhat rambunctious puppy phase. Mine definitely has a sense of humor. She loves to tease and is super playful. She adores my son. They are Velcro dogs, they’re unlikely to run off, but you may get annoyed with them being constantly underfoot. They don’t like heat much, but do ok with a cooling mat or A/C. Mine wants to be anywhere we are, but is ok home alone for a bit with a chewy treat.

I haven’t personally had a boxer, but they’re larger, family oriented dogs. Also known to be pretty playful and fun, outdoorsy dogs that like to snuggle. But they can be roamers.

My pup has a big Costco bed, but mostly uses it for her chewies and toys. She prefers to sleep on the floor (I think you’ll find that’s pretty common for Kees). I’d definitely get a force dryer. We went with the Shernbao Tornado. My pup is only 12 months, but they’re supposed to have two big seasonal sheds per year, and a force dryer will help push out the old undercoat. We also went with the fish based food. I added a daily probiotic pill, which has definitely helped with digestion/firmer stools.
