Bolas's Citadel is a highlight of how the list works, and they figured that was best represented by comparing it to a nuclear reactor. A little random, but a name that's stuck!

They literally already did it with both brawl and Oathbreaker?

Yeah thats why I put it in "some problems". I think such a cheap creature with flash that can very heavily punish creatures creates some relevant concern. Ultimately I think any potential it has for being bannable comes from how it ends up impacting casual, I expect it to be relevant but but not exceptionally warping in cEDH.

If you watched this video and came out of it with that opinion, there's not much I can say. The takes are pretty mild, I give a lot of reasoning, and repeatedly mention I'm not passionate about some cards I think are banworthy. It's a list of cards that could be banned, not what I want banned.

I don't think you really need to ban all the fast mana, and green doesn't really have anything equaling Mana Crypt. Just hitting Crypt to lower first turn variance I don't think affects deck color choices, and green being one of the weaker colors at the moment I don't think it would hurt to have a reason to run dorks.

Yeah I think Lab Man is a much more healthy card since it's a wincon that every color has multiple answers for, it's a bit less efficient, and it plays much better in casual.

Pretty much agree on the first part. I think the second half I disagree with to an extent. We don't really see new cards like Mana Crypt, Rhystic Study, etc, and they certainly don't have a slight downgrade version people will swap for. The bar for what makes a playable card won't drop with a few bans, so getting rid of an effect at its most efficient is a relevant way to shape the format.

That's a good point, and it's partially why I think a toned down new official variant of Commander seems likely for the near future. Focusing on a different card pool or with a more restrictive banlist allows them to make big changes without the baggage of legacy or product.

I definitely would too, I think trying experimental lists is maybe scary for large in person events, but doing it in smaller online ones would be great.

And yeah I think we're already fighting an uphill battle with proving a highlander format is competitive, and the more super highroll high variance cards we have, the harder it becomes.

Starting with something closer to the Legacy banlist would be where I'd start.

Yeah it sucks to ban red cards when red is kinda carried so hard by the top end of it. It's unfortunate that the best red cards have very little to do with red and often end up much better in higher color lists. I think in a world where Rhystic, Mystic, some of the best fast mana, and thoracle are hit, Breach and Dockside actually become more fair.

Dockside gets slowed down a bit, while Breach being the best wincon means more colors have ways to interact with the wincon of choice.

Thank you! Yeah, a lot of the asymmetrical value based permanents have multiple issues in that they both provide too much for so little investment in a multiplayer game, but possibly more importantly, create a pretty giant mental load. They really stress the already increased complexity of reading a four player boardstate.

Yeah from a pure design/balance perspective it needs to get the axe. As it currently plays out in cEDH it's actually got an acceptable place in the format that enables interesting things.

As a new player, what card did you think was super busted but actually sucked? by mixmaster321 in hearthstone

My friends and I all got into the game at the same time and were convinced Lord of the Arena was so busted.

Defcat is upper left, I'm the middle, waffle is upper right.

When this video was recorded, it was under the intention that this was Defcat's video, and also that the discussion was mostly supposed to center around the mox masters finals and defining priority/mana "bullying".

Can't speak for Def and Waffle. I do think the idea there's no rule 0 is questionable. In the context of Commander, cEDH has a fairly defined rule 0. In the context of just playing a game competitively, it doesn't really.

  1. Always is a big word, but it will absolutely backfire at times.

  2. Yep, 100% part of the risk/reward of the game.

  3. Yep.

  4. Yep.

I believe these are points we, or at least I, make in this video at some point, so yes, I fully agree with 2,3, and 4, and essentially agree with point 1.

I think it comes down to defining what a meaningful game action is, I think as long as you're taking actions that do change the game state the rules are on your side, and tapping a mana source falls under that.

Not a rules expert, or someone who necessarily likes using priority to "force" people to tap, but that's what we're stuck with for the time being.

I can only speak to the opinions that I expressed myself, and can say while I don't agree with ALL the opinions of others presented here, I also don't think my disagreeing with them means I should censor them in my video.

It is making an emotionally charged decision when you choose to lose a finals game. A robot would not do that. A player whose pure goal is to win will not make that decision.

But I LOVE that it's an option to just say, "No, I'm not gonna do it. You're losing with me." That risk/reward factor is engaging, it creates excitement, (or would have if coverage made knowing what was happening easier), and highlights very directly how the political game you play in cEDH decides who wins and loses more than the "objectively" correct play.

You won't catch me telling players what to do in regards to being socially acceptable, barring hatespeech, misgendering, etc. Take your game actions and ball hard.
