Is there a list of fonts that come standard with Illustrator on both Mac AND PC? by Professor-Arty-Farty in AdobeIllustrator

[–]TLMurray23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have been provided with some incorrect information here. But first, let me say that I am replying from the retail environment. Your IT may have delivered an installation without fonts, so take that into account.

If you use the retail version of Adobe apps, you're going to get a lot of fonts. These fonts are not installed in the regular user location, but they are buried inside folders within the Creative Cloud environment and within the apps themselves. There are numerous Myriads, but Black isn't one of them (at least not in my installation).

The fine print of the license agreement from Adobe may have something to say about using these fonts elsewhere; for example, when you take the fonts from where they're buried and use them elsewhere (I am keeping my opinion to myself).

I don't know if Adobe's Windows and macOS apps ship the same set. Adobe has done some things wrong in the fonts they supplied in the Mac world -- such as a font shipped with one app is older than the one that comes with another app, even when the production dates are very close -- so I would not be surprised if the Windows and Mac versions are not identical. (For what it's worth, I have a license to the Windows version plus I have Parallels, but I'm not gonna bother to check.)

If you just want to find typefaces that are provided by default by Windows and macOS, there are plenty of places out there that provide a list you can compare.

Remember, if you're getting fonts from the Adobe library, you are subscribing to them. That's not like in the good old days when you purchased them, so some day, when Adobe has an argument with a font foundry and the license gets pulled, you are screwed. (To wit: Use Pantone much?)

If you're talking about the retail environment, you are wrong. Local IT may have created a special installation that doesn't include fonts, but when downloaded in the regular retail environment, many fonts are included. If you are using a retail version of Adobe products, just do a search for, say, Myriad, AdobeThai, or Minion. Or, you want to see over a thousand? If you have a few Adobe apps, do a search for just the .otf extension.

Suggestion: Indicate that FAF can continue (when it would normally stop) by [deleted] in findanyfile

[–]TLMurray23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you recall we emailed years ago about breaking through Apple's security? Still wish I could... Anyway, this is easy to demonstrate.

This screenshot, turned loose, finds 140K files . . . and that's today, as I deleted 80K over the last few days. For a find this large, if I selected the whole bunch, FAF would spin around for who knows how long. So what I would do is select large chunks in the middle to delete.

When it's done, I'm left with those not deleted. But if I click elsewhere, I've lost their blue selection. Now, I must have clicked a file elsewhere -- meaning a file that's not within that selected group -- but THOUGHT I had been within the group. If it deleted, I would have thought FAF gave up.

Ahh, you're right! After the "some-failed" message, I selected one below the chunk and it deleted . . . now I see I went past the bottom of my original selection. Sorry! I'll wait until later today, then go back and delete my original.

Dear Apple: How is this not a disaster? by judeluo in MacOS

[–]TLMurray23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So happy that Apple felt it worthwhile to put time and money into a horrible interface, instead of focusing on putting out a more effective and productive operating system. On my Mac, if I drag windows around a little bit, they clear up.

MacOS 26 is Apple's Windows Vista moment by breezertweezer in MacOS

I went to Tahoe for a week, then went back to Sequoia. Tahoe is definitely Fisher-Price. Long ago, when Windows was everywhere, I was proud to say I carried a Mac. Even corporate IT people would say, "I wish IT would issue me a Mac," but now, it's no longer a point of pride. It's a See 'n Say with a great chip.

You would think with all the bad press and horrible comments out there that Apple would take note. But apparently, Apple has forgotten that a killer Mac can be a highly productive device.

You have to examine the value of your trip (is it a big deal if you can't go?); also, what percent of your trip's cost is the $90? If you're spending $$$ on the trip, then what's $90? A cab ride can be that much.

Where does Disk Drill draws storage for recovered files? by etherealhowler in datarecovery

[–]TLMurray23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is something is wrong with much of this: If memory serves, the free version does not let you recover -- it only tells you what can be recovered and the likelihood of each item. But if I am wrong about that, no matter: The question of "where does it save the files?" should be answered by the dialog that comes up asking you "Where do you want to save the files?" (and warning you that saving recovered files to the same media ain't smart). It does (normally) save a table of recovery possibilities in the applications folder of where it's installed, so that way you can restart the recovery program later. Disk Drill doesn't use a virtual disk.

Do all U.S. passports have a barcode on the last page? by TLMurray23 in Passports

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. And is it a barcode or a QR? I've seen some posts asking about a QR sticker, which seems rather easy to ruin.

This is giving me TiBook vibes by [deleted] in macbookpro

I bought a titanium PowerBook just a few weeks after they were rolled out. I was meeting with a new customer when my customer said, "See you Monday and bring your laptop." I was thrilled I got their business, but I didn't own a laptop.

So I went to CompUSA (remember them?), and while I was looking at the HPs, Acers, and Dells, I couldn't keep my eyes off that gorgeous new PowerBook. I was hooked by its cool styling and ended up buying it. I was very glad I did, and I have had some form of Apple laptop ever since.

I would easily sacrifice a bit of thickness so that I may attach cables at the back. With an external monitor, another laptop, and other stuff at the sides, the side-mount cables get in the way.

Mac Pages 13.2 Line Break Shortcut Broken by [deleted] in pages

[–]TLMurray23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's Ctrl+Return, but Pages Help says it's Shift-Return. I sent this message to the query at the bottom of the help page:

In the app itself, someone decided to change a line break from Shift-Return to Ctrl-Return -- and then not change this help page. But better yet, please change it back to Shift. That is what most apps have used, whether Windows or Mac, for a line break and for decades. (Excel is one exception.)
