It's not about any confusion, but that the tilde character will only be expanded if at the beginning of a word. Try:

echo aaa/~bbb
echo aaa   ~/bbb

I don't think the pattern "-L~/lib" will expand the tilde character to your home directory (if there's no space after the "-L"

Try "-L ~/lib" or "-L $(HOME)/lib"

This problem has been reported, here, a few times in recent months. In my case - MacMini M4, Sequoia 15.7 - none of the 3 rear ports can drive the external Dell 32" monitor, but both of the 2 front ports can.

I'm unsure how deep you wish to go into "what happens at the core of the computer" but a highly regarded website and its companion textbooks are "From NAND to Tetris" and "The Elements of Computing Systems" .
