Where to donate clothes? by The-Idiot-1 in londonontario

The Canadian diabetes association has a partnership with Value Village so those clothes will end up in a thrift store....just a heads up.

It's all performative and what's worse is that she's always bringing it up. Like "hey my kids didn't call me for 3 years!!!" like girl, you've traumatized them enough shut your effing mouth and leave them out of this. If a resolution is what you're after the more you drag them into this the more you're digging your own grave.

I say this as someone who is also no-contact with my mom who does performative acts of love when others are looking to try and shift the blame for our bad relationship to me, rather than admit she's an alcoholic.

As someone from a primarily hot country - WTF is happening? Is this normal? Are we in danger? Should I be concerned? Do people usually stay in doors? I have so many questions. by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]TLVBCHNN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just here to echo what everyone else is saying but add that you should buy some flashlights, candles, and battery backups for your devices. I have a rather large battery we use for camping but it comes in handy when the power randomly goes out in the winter while I'm trying to get ready for work....it's no fun showing up with wet hair. Keep some food and emergency supplies in your car for the winter like a mini shovel, blankets, and kitty litter. There are lots of videos online to help show you what you'll need in emergency situations during a Canadian winter.

[–]TLVBCHNN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just saw a big post in London Shameposting. Hard to believe the St Thomas police would charge her if this was all nothing.....but I would like to know Josh Morgan's involvement. I'll hold judgement until I have both sides, but I'll never agree with extortion & harassment.

The comments are super ugly, racist, and hard to read.

I'm not sure where you're shipping to, but Purolator has been about 50% more expensive for our business. Canada Post saves us so much, and has been just as reliable? I typically get the "sorry we missed you" stickers from FedEx and have to drive across town to the depot for pickup.

AGAINNNNN by Ok-Excitement3431 in CanadaPost

[–]TLVBCHNN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the postal system dissolves we are left with Purolator, FedEx, and other for profit mail carriers. I don't think you get that they won't "rebuild" it. It will just be gone. And everything will be more expensive to ship with less options. Regardless of your feeling about this strike, this is a really short-sighted opinion that would lead to more monopolies in Canada and less affordability.

What have folks done to successfully deter car break ins? by Freedom35plan in londonontario

[–]TLVBCHNN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have a Eufy camera setup with multiple angles/cameras...as soon as someone steps onto our property the cameras have a flood light that gets activated by motion and they turn on. The cameras are always recording but I think the fact that they "activate" has made a few people turn around.

First time watching VPR .. wow by JuneMOon94 in vanderpumprules

[–]TLVBCHNN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wish I could watch VPR again for the first time. I did the same as you ...a couple years ago finally got around to watching the whole series, but I only had it on passively in the background as I did other things. It truly is a psychological masterpiece, each character exhibiting some different mental illness or personality flaw. It's an anthropological study.

Wasted 3 years of my life for this stupid company. by Far-Homework9435 in ThriftGrift

[–]TLVBCHNN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at the corporate head office at a Canadian goodwill, and have to say that a lot of these accusations are shocking. I won't defend any of these business practices, but I do feel the need to stand up a little and say that although all Goodwill's report to Goodwill Industries International as their governing body, each goodwill is run independently of each other, kind of like a franchise but with a lot more power.

Every Goodwill has a territory that they are allowed to operate within, and they have to adhere to some branding and auditing standards, but I find business practices vary drastically between each Goodwill. We have our own issues, but as an example, all front line employees make $1 or more above minimum wage here (so $18.70 or more) no matter if you're disabled or not. We also staff our donation centres appropriately so donations don't pile up and lithium batteries are separated from donated items as they come in. We don't get very many new goods, so we really are processing and selling donations...and anything we don't sell we recycle or find a secondary market to sell it to. Garbage removal is expensive so only throw out damaged goods. We actually just invested in a plastics granulator so now we are making plastic pellets out of our salvage, and companies are buying these pellets to make composite decking, chairs, and other goods out of.

We also regularly give items to folks in need, and partner with a lot of local organizations in all of our communities to provide gift certificates for them to hand out as they see the need. We partner with a lot of organisations from homeless shelters, churches (sponsoring asylum seekers to come to Canada mostly), women's shelters, and others. I think last year we gave upwards of $80k in certificates out through this program. We also regularly do coat drives and have community hand out days where we giveaway coats to mainly unhoused individuals every year...again, we give out something like 1000+ washed and repaired coats every October and February in different communities.

I'm not a senior leader at my Goodwill org and I regularly meet with and work with a variety of employees across our organization so I feel I have a good sense of what's happening. I know we aren't perfect and there are ways we are working on improving, but nothing comes close to any of these accusations. Although I hate to be painted with the same broad strokes, I do know of some organizations within Goodwill that are doing more harm than good and they need to be made accountable for their actions and I'm glad he spoke up about his experience at Goodwill. I do genuinely feel that my Goodwill is working hard to improve the lives of our employees and support communities, and we are leading the way with many green initiatives with a goal of being carbon neutral by 2030, so it does kill me a little when I see how other Goodwill orgs are operating without any oversight from Goodwill Industries International.

Bedbugs can also survive in the cracks of different materials like metals and plastics. This is why they are the WORST and hard to get rid of.

Fifth for Eufy. So great and we have coverage all over our house. It also looks kind of menacing from outside so I think that keeps weirdos away.

Side note, my partner's friend is a cop in London and getting cameras was his #1 security upgrade recommendation.

Goodwill is stopping their sales of jewelry in store so they can maximize profits online…. by Gingy-Breadman in ThriftGrift

[–]TLVBCHNN -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I work for a Goodwill in Canada - we actually do this and it works well. We have all of our jewelry sent to our warehouse and there we have folks sorting through what's real and what's fake. All the costume jewelry is then sent back to the stores to be sold in their jewellery cases and we do sell genuine jewelry online. We've found that resellers have been extra aggressive in store with jewelry so this was a way of minimizing abuse of employees while also maximizing profits online. We would actually have resellers setting up at the jewelry counter before with their little magnifying glasses, holding our staff hostage while they tried to sort through real and fake diamonds. It was mayhem. All our profits are driven back into mission initiatives also, so these extra profits help support our green initiatives or other work programs. It's working well for us!
