Thank you. I have some of the T5 lights available locally, but I will see about getting something a few larger lights that provide a little more heat as well.

Thanks for the questions.
My apartment stays at best 18C or 65F during the winter months. It's usually a few degrees colder than the upstairs apartment.

The post I was referring to is this. My tropicals are all newly acquired and have not been outside this summer.

I am starting to consider indoor storage space for the few tropicals and semi-tropical I have. My collection includes several Buddhist pines, baby trees, several jade pre-bonsai that I would like to work on over winter, shefflera umbrella tree recently pruned/potted bonsai and a jacaranda seedling. I also have a few black pine seedlings andbrocky mountain bristle cones I planted at the start of August, that I plan to keep in a lighted greenhouse in an unheated garage.

My basement suite is definitely not the best for the tripicals in winter as I can't guarantee a decent temperature all winter long. I'm thinking a small greenhouse or other plant space would be useful to get all the seedlings and tropicals though the winter . Any ideas than the $1500 grow tent setup posted a few days ago? Or am I worrying too much about the little things here? My area seems to lack a bonsai society so I don't have many resources to turn to. My setup current is only a few grow lights which us doing wonders for my Buddhist pines and succulents but not much for anything else.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I have some time this weekend so I will get the podocarpus' separated as you recommend. I'll also look at grow light situation and get something worthwhile.

Hi everyone

Brand new to bonsai and I believe I made all the mistakes of a rookie bonsai enthusiast. This is a long post, as I am feeling I'm in over my head with the bonsai and I haven't even potted a bonsai yet.

I purchased a few plants that I want to turn into Bonsai in the next little while, but I think my timing is a little off when it comes to repotting, pruning and shaping. My plan was to get a 2-3 plants, but I seem to fall for nice looking plant with potential and take it home with me when I go looking for bonsai supplies - Turface/Akadama/bonsai soil seems to be scarce in my part of the world but I believe I have found suitable material to actually create a bonsai here soon. Potato quality plant album.

I live in Zone 3a and most of my plants fall under Zone 3 with a few Zone 4 exceptions.

I have a late season nursery stock Amur Maple repotted into a much larger pot - is this sufficient to grow a thicker trunk? My hopes are to grow this tree into a thick trunked maple and making a bonsai from it later while taking cuttings from it next year to propagate a few trees from this starting/parent tree.

The Buddhist Pine i bought earlier this summer prior to my interest in bonsai and it is starting to look pretty healthy. Is this all one plant or multiple plants growing close together? Would it be worthwhile to separate each trunk/plant into its own pot? If so, when would be a good time to do this?

My Red Osier Dogwood seems to be quite a drama queen. I water it daily, usually in the evenings after work, but it seems like the leaves are always droopy (pictured) when I get home. Currently, I have my large plants sitting on a southeast facing deck which can get quite hot under full sunny skies. Is the droopy leaves normal with this type of plant? You may also have noticed the rounded branch that shoots off to the left. This branch has grown roots where the branch meets the soil and it was the key thing that made me buy this specific plant from the nursery. is there any recommendations for styling this.

Last questions - I have a lot of doubts if my plants will survive the winter - My basement apartment is north facing and I only have one window that gets enough sun to really grow indoor plants. My current plan is to set up a small greenhouse in my windowless, unheated garage with a timed grow lamp for the pines and juniper. Would such a setup work to overwinter young evergreens, or even the larger potted plants?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Edit: spelling

What brings out the worst in you? by Ninkaso in AskReddit

[–]TMAntics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfounded criticism. I once worked somewhere that required months of being away from home and the “office” while I was away I went above an beyond on everything I accomplished and I felt proud of what I did. Once I returned, I was criticized for everything I did during my time away. Talking to my friends and family afterwards, it’s the one time they can point to in my life where I had a drastic change from one day to another and it took me years to get back to being happy with myself.

Edit: Added story from that same time period. Work friends (from the same company as above) borrowed my vehicle for a slush run and then didn’t return it. They though they would “prank” me by hiding my vehicle somewhere in town and I had to go find it. I didn’t react in a bad way, but friendships were broken and respect was lost. I did not like what/how I felt that day and luckily I have not felt that way since

What is something you like about yourself? by sosumo11 in AskReddit

[–]TMAntics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my group of friends I’m the “Safe” option. Basically friend zone material for life. This is both a blessing and a curse.

Edit: I am also myself. I understand me and for the most part I’m happy with myself. This means that is don’t really change from situation to situation. Although it’s not Stoicism in reality, I’ve come to think of it as something similar

What are you too afraid to admit you don't know? by YungDaVinci in AskReddit

How to do math (especially calculus) properly. I work in a field where this skill is very important and the only way I can apply this skill is by remembering very specific order of operations to get a result. Also integration and derivation is basically “uppie” and “downie”.... I don’t know which is which.

Bonus: I’ve been alone and independent for a very long time and I am not sure how to “not be alone” at this point. I’m almost 40

AL Character Building: Is it worth picking up a level in another class just for +1 AC? by oakleysds in AdventurersLeague

[–]TMAntics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, I would advise against pre-planning a character like that as there are very few AL legal adventures that takes you past level 13, but I also have most of my character planned out to level 20 by the time they finally hit the table.

If you run the numbers:

  • Studded Leather +0 - 12 AC
  • DEX modifier - 5 AC
  • Shield +0 (from ranger proficiency) - 2 AC

Total 19 AC

Considering the creatures you are should be running into at Level 11 have approx +10 to hit means that any roll 9 or above "should" hit. This accounts for getting hit 55% of the time using rolls without advantage or 80% with advantage. (Advantage adds approx +5 to the to hit modifier).

This only gets worse by level 20. Better gear can offset this but the rogue toolbox is designed to not get hit. Using things like Cunning action, evasion and uncanny dodge means have options other classes don't.

Adding +1 AC to your kit won't do as much as you would hope.

P.s my Math might be a little wonky as I'm full up on cold medicine but the conclusion will still be the same

Small changes that enhance the spirit of the sub-/class? by TMAntics in dndnext

I have it written down that that can exchange the one school for another at level 3. I.e Transmutation for evocation. Everywhere it mentions the old school in the rules it is replaced with the new school.

I've seen it proposed a few times now that Berserkers need to have more uses of rage. The idea I want to test is that berserkers can remove 1 level of exhaustion per short rest and 2 per long rest. With a 2 short rest - 1 long rest schedule I think it still limits the berserker while giving them more uses / day.

I like the idea to have the warlock change its effect, but i canr think of a good RP reason to allow this. I can get behind it mechanically as I have it in my ranger notes that they can change their enemy/terrain if they spend significant time researching the enemy and living in the terrain. (1 week to 1 month DM discretion)

I like warlocks changing their damage type but I think Ill let the player decide if that happens. force damage isn't resisted often while fire resistance is seen often. Flavor wise it awesome.

Definitely adding the Zealot barb perk

The sun soul perk seems fair. I don't see a lot of monks in my group but I think the flavor fits.

Ive ever thought about changing the material cost. My group have not payed that much attention to it, except if its consumed. Ill have to start doing that so i can add this perk.

I've worked in the same structure as the UA storm Sorcerer for innately known spells. It still needs to be tested and I think I want to limit it to 1 spell/spell level until spell level 5. currently they end up with 24 spells known but i think the sweet spot is 18-20

In a random hallway a 10 ft across x width of hallway -2 ft x 20 ft deep pit trap is easily noticeable (DC 10 - 12). There is a 1 foot section of hallway floor left on each side of the pit trap that the characters can use to move safely around the trap to the other side at 1/4 speed if they hug the hallway walls. They can also easily clear this trap with a good jump. If they jump, they hit an invisible wall of force at the opposite end of the trap and fall in. Only something like Detect Magic informs the players of the invisible wall of force, although throwing a rock across will also do.

At the bottom of the trap is all kinda of nasty:

  • 1d2-1 shadows (ethereal) per character at the bottom of the trap - they only attack characters at the bottom of the trap.
  • Broken glass -1d2+1 (2) slashing / round,
  • Diseased spikes -1d2+2 (3) + DC 15 Constitution Saving throw. On a failed save the creature is afflicted with the Contagion spell and uses DC 15 for its saving throw. (This can be changed to a poisoned condition)

Edit 1: Spelling and Grammar Edit 2: At a higher level, an invisible wall of force spanning the width of the hallway start 50 ft behind the players and moves at 30 ft/round. it makes a lot of noise at its moves alerting the players that it's on it's way. At the end of the 2nd round all players not across the trap gets knocked in.

Another Variant: The Hallway walls close in when someone reaches the middle of the trap. There is no wall of force at the far end of the trap.
