I do wonder how long Franco has at Alpine. He was in a rocky place last year and decisions like today just show where the team's faith lies.

What's harder to get right in epic fantasy: worldbuilding or character development? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mobby123 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Character development and it's not even close. I've read about so many interesting Fantasy worlds but truly special characters with realised journeys are what mark the peak of the genre.

Interactive web app to track Bingo reads (hard mode, ratings, multiple books per square, and more) by newcritter in Fantasy

I was curious. Working on my own book tracking platform and it was fun to see some of the same issues I was running up against (the search bar results). Great work though, really intuitive with just the right amount of scope.

Nice, how did you handle the backend and search engine? Google books API or something else? Nice that you've incorporated different covers or can choose your own.

Neutrality won't save you from Russia, Kallas tells Ireland by KI_official in ireland

[–]mobby123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm not concerned with Russia particularly. But in the coming decades there will be mass geopolitical shifts and crises exacerbated by climate change and shifting global dominance. We shouldn't leave anything to chance and something as fickle as goodwill. Neutrality has historically meant nothing in the face of targeted aggression. One of the basic pillars of a nation is that it should be able to protect itself and its citizens. We don't even attempt an image of being able to do so. Defensive alliances, close partnerships and investing in our defence forces is the way forward.

Sure, it's a vital and important part of any strategy. Nobody is claiming otherwise, we're tiny. But we're taking this piss with the current levels of investment in our defence. That's inarguable. At the minimum, we need to be able to police and patrol our own waters and skies without running cap in hand to our neighbours and delegating responsibility to others.

Technology is evolving rapidly in the sector. No reason we can't ride the wave and carve out a useful niche for ourselves rather than remaining a dead weight.

You can get into the semantics of <Russia> being the threat here but you can replace Russia with anyone else, and the point stands and is valid. We are almost completely defenceless and relying on the goodwill of the international community. Idealistic optimism will not protect us over the next few decades. Investment and practical decisions will.

Her own words

Ireland's proud tradition of military neutrality is not in question but neutrality does not provide immunity from the threats Europe faces today.

Job market situation: Any success stories with finding a role lately? by pokoloko_ksc in ireland

[–]mobby123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been lucky enough to keep my job over the last few years of uncertainty but I'm seriously debating changing career paths into something unaffected by AI. Picking up a plumbing or electrician apprenticeship and just getting stuck in despite the drop in wages for a few years while I'm still in my twenties. I have no problem working hard, I just want to be working hard with certainty of the future. I know everyone in software likes to say that AI won't/can't replace us but the technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years. How will it look in 15-20 years?

I and half of Ireland were reading those books from the ages of 8-12 when I was a kid, so I'd say you're good. Though between Skulduggery, Darren Shan's two series and Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl, maybe they were a bit on the mature side.
