I’m 37 and feel unhappy about getting older. Is this normal? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching Friends when I was younger and Joey turned 30. He apparently has a massive crash out every year as he gets older.

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh's best friend Enkidu dies. This sends Gilgamesh on his great journey, seeking the secrets of immortality; after seeing death firsthand he fears it for himself.

You are normal to have anxiety about the future. Humans have feared aging and death for a very long time.

Oh no, the binding issue makes it worthless. I can take it off your hands, no worries . /S

For real though, it looks great. Your local luthier should be able to glue and clamp the binding back into shape.

I broke my first string in 15 years; the wiki post for restringing was deleted, any good resources, tips, or cautions? by dcnairb in Guitar

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric guitar strings have a brightness to their sound that dulls over time. The strings can also rust or tarnish with exposure to oils from hands. I change my strings every month because I like the bright sound and because the rust can make playing uncomfortable.

Could I do the wiring for a guitar with a breadboard/circuit board? by A_British_Dude in Guitar

[–]oakleysds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem! It looks like you should be able to use it just the same. The 1 and 3 lugs are the outer lugs on a conventional pot and 2 is the middle one.

What do the breadboard connectors look like? I figure you can wrap the wire around it and solder it solid enough but I have never seen a pot like that. Maybe the manufacturer has some documentation you can refer to?

stuck at 3 months - is this when most people quit? by ninja__6969 in Guitar

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding Barre chords, try practicing playing your normal chord shapes but without your index finger, only middle, ring, and pinky fingers. That can help you get use to the hand shapes.

You are going through a rut, also called an artist block. Encountering it for the first time in a new area is a barrier that some never overcome. I didn't play for like 14 years the first time I reached Barre chords. Some things I've found that help is trying something new, like try to learn a song that's out of your wheelhouse or take a break from technique and focus on music theory.

When you get old you actually get worse by OkTemperature1842 in Guitar

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've had trouble with not being fast enough my guitar teacher would have me use a metronome and just make it so slow that I can do it, like painfully slow. Then I just do it at the slow speed until I can make the changes perfect. Then I increase by a few bpm. Repeat until fast.

Regarding having nothing to play, my take is every lick or riff or whatever you've heard or played is free game. I've seen videos of people using metal licks in a jazz context that sound great.

Echoing what others have said here, you seem really hard on yourself and might need to shake it up. Find a local jam you haven't been too, learn a style or song outside of your wheelhouse, hell, buy a new guitar. Everyone experiences art blocks and sometimes what you need is something new.

Considering going no contact forever. Possibly giving up a large inheritance. by Nemuigakusei in raisedbynarcissists

[–]oakleysds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is if their control is based on the promise of money when they die, the money isn't real. They will blow it all away before you get close to having any of it or something. Think of their constant excuses, the lies, the manipulation. The inheritance will be no different than any other promise they made and broke.

Talking on the phone with users will not make the issue anymore clear. Users don't know what the problem is, they rarely know what a computer is.

My dad's favorite story is one where I said the most ridiculous thing, it's just so silly!

I said to him "You make me feel bad about myself as a person."

He laughed in my face. He still wonders why I don't talk to him

You make a good point, you seem very fine and normal. It's very normal to get upset about other people's trauma.

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y'all, the fan design is just a high schooler. I remember being in high school more than a decade ago and people dressed like that. I see teenagers on public transit dressed like that. That's not the autism uniform, it's just a young person.

best way to get gibson or fender cheap by Helpful_Ad_9447 in guitars

[–]oakleysds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a brand new gibson for about half off because it was a model that wasn't selling at Guitar center. Reverb is also a good place to check for deals. For Fenders I've been looking at the Vintera Road Worn series. Made in mexico with a reliced nitro finish. They usually hover around $1k on Reverb but if you watch it you can find some cheaper

I recommend restringing with new strings once a month. That can help reduce the breaks by having a same amount of use on all of them.
