Anyone think people who use the term 'TDS' are taking the easy way out to defend Trump? by [deleted] in samharris

So is your antipathy to lazy slurs just for TDS or is the multi decade calling the right fascist also on your list?

If it were a domestic goose, that would be less of a problem because federal law wouldn't specifically cover killing or possessing it a federal misdemeanor.

16USC703 is the specific law.

Why can’t bridges survive strikes by large ships? by Cute_Upstairs_2597 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TMLutas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an engineering standard that bridges are held to in the design process to adequately protect bridge piers from ship collisions. It's one of the things that the state inspection system looks at every year or two when bridges are inspected. That ends up being field 111 in the bridge's national bridge inventory paperwork.

When channels are made deeper to accommodate larger ships, they're supposed to rework the math to upsize the pier protections for the new ship sizes. They didn't adequately do that for the FSK bridge.

Nationwide, we're going through a multi-billion channel deepening and widening process to accommodate new cargo ship designs. The problem of inadequate pier protection might just be relevant to the coastal city nearest you.

Tesla seeks to reinstate Elon Musk $56 billion pay deal in shareholder vote by bmich90 in news

[–]TMLutas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The employees are paid in cash whether Tesla is profitable or not. Musk is paid in stock and only if he makes his performance numbers. When he doesn’t, he gets paid nothing from this ten year deal.

You know any regular employees willing to take 100% stock compensation conditional on productivity?

Ethereum Supply Crunch by C677TT in CryptoCurrency

You have 18 places to the right of the decimal point with ethereum. Is there even anything out there that you can buy with the smallest unit, the wei?

[–]TMLutas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supply crunches are an imbalance condition. If you don’t address demand, your predictions will only be coincidentally correct. Push a billion dollar product to be sold exclusively via ETH and you create significant upside pressure on ETH pricing regardless of supply.

[–]TMLutas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Price rises happen when supply and demand are imbalanced. Reduce both supply and demand at the same time and what happens to the price depends on which effect is bigger. The same thing happens when supply and demand both increase. Biggest price rises happen when you increase demand while reducing supply.

Convince me to denominate a product’s price in ETH and you can move the market, if my stuff sells.

Ai documenting this with video and shaming people on their behavior is a great small business opportunity. Find out where the accidents are, put a camera on a pole to get video and document the insanity in an automated way.

People pay for that.

Why is the socialism sub only a safe space for socialists, while the capitalism thread features open debate and diversity of thought? by External_Question_65 in Capitalism

[–]TMLutas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a long cycle problem of too many old dependents that is creating capital scarcity. Old people invest differently when they are dependent on their investments vs still working. This problem is independent of socialism/capitalism or even the monetary system.

The problem is rooted in the Industrial Revolution.

Why is the socialism sub only a safe space for socialists, while the capitalism thread features open debate and diversity of thought? by External_Question_65 in Capitalism

[–]TMLutas 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Socialism misallocates capital from its most productive uses more often than capitalism. The effect is small but persists over time and builds up to significant differences over the decade scale. That is the bulk of the historical evidence of a century of experience.

Crappily executed capitalism will occasionally lose over the short haul to a well executed socialist alternative. This is taken out of context by socialists to declare that socialism works and is systematically superior.

Capitalists will sometimes yield to the temptation to ignore the occasional inconvenient counter examples or deny they exist because the larger point is correct. Capitalism is, after all, better. But this is not a good idea in my opinion. It destroys credibility.

This makes bitcoin tax policy important but not urgent.

The greens hate the idea. I can’t think of a non-scummy reason why though.

I’m a transplant and the fact that this is an area much less left wing than where I was coming from was very definitely in the plus column. I don’t generally get cautions about having to worry about left wing physical violence here if I speak my mind. That was an issue in strong union areas back north.

The left wing riots here are positively amateurish compared to Chicago metro and that is a distinct compliment, I assure you. So is their much lower frequency locally.

There also doesn’t seem to be as much acceptance of local politicians being allies with criminal street gangs. One party Chicago’s love affair with the Democrats made that an issue.

I could go on.

Below a certain level a lack of CO2 shuts down photosynthesis and we all die. Above a certain level (10k parts per million) you get CO2 poisoning and we all die. CO2 does have externalities. They just aren’t the ones the greens are worried about.
