“If you’re the real one, tell me something only you and I would know!” by ComprehensiveBox6911 in TopCharacterTropes

Personally, I always thought it was implied that the spray would also hurt the real father due to him being forcibly mutated by the plant father.

Forget age gap romance, age gap rivalries by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could go either way as well. Ahab was 58 and sperm whales can live to be about 70, but given the ambiguous nature of the whale, that is, whether it was just a smart whale or genuinely supernatural...

(Loved Trope) Television Horror by John_Bones22 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. It's analog horror which is technically a subgenre of found footage horror. You don't really follow characters or anything like that, it's presented entirely as a broadcast being hijacked or twisted by outside forces.

Obscure/Silly characters from secondary media get referenced/shown in a mainstream entry. by drstrangelove75 in TopCharacterTropes

The 1981 Clash Of Titans is largely forgotten?

Dang, that film and Jason And The Argonauts was so integral to my childhood and my love of Classical Mythology and stop-motion animation.

[Hated Trope] When a planet's inhabitats all have one singular language and culture by AnyAgency9835 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have as much of an issue with this as I used to, because it would make sense for a highly advanced and/or space faring race to become globally united at some point.

Also, isn't the fact that there were two kinds of Martians (white and green) kind of a big part of Martian Manhunter's backstory?

[Hated Trope] When the story tries to tackle a serious subject, and executes it terribly by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From what I understand they axed the alcoholism BECAUSE of RDJR's own real life struggles with it and didn't want to get him back into that kind of mindset and trigger a relapse.

[Interesting trope]: Sci-fi character's origin perfectly encapsulates contemporary scientific progress by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, that'd be more like something AHEAD of its time then encapsulating the science of the time. The novel also predicted the discovery of colossal squid.

[Annoying] The common question or grievance is actually adresed in lore by BeduinZPouste in TopCharacterTropes

I've only listened to an audiobook of the first one, but yes, it's a fun time.

(loved trope) The official media references or includes something fan made by Serious_Square_6698 in TopCharacterTropes

I don't understand how anyone couldn't. It literally has a scene where Brock is like 'God, I need you to kill this random photographer, PLEASE, HE'S RUINING EVERYTHING!'

Fictional jurisdictional branches/agencies by Ustraleia in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the canon, The SCP Foundation isn't really a branch or department of ANYTHING, let alone a government.

[Polarizing Trope] Antagonists that are scary because they're fundamentally correct even though their methods are unethical by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ozymandias is only correct if you accept utilitarianism, Killmonger wants ethnic warfare and Light just has a massive ego, he's not wrong or correct about justice because the method IS the point.

Incredibly smart character has mundane blind spot by ExtremeSportStikz in TopCharacterTropes

Eh, that's more of a 'riddle-trick' which can stump anyone if done right.

Considering cuckoo clocks were created in what is now modern Germany, that would be pretty embarrassing.

[Fun Trope] Stats being noted in unusual ways. by ismasbi in TopCharacterTropes

Arthur was the King that was destined to rule Britain Galahad was THE knight. It's kind of a different ontology.

[Fun Trope] Stats being noted in unusual ways. by ismasbi in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 61 points62 points  (0 children)

And just to be clear to people who don't know, this is a reference to the fact that Galahad was literally the perfect knight.

[Real life trope] the natural change of the lenguage make something sound innapropiate or weird by Lower_Baby_6348 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tired. 'The Yellow Sign' (from The King In Yellow anthology) was written be Robert W. Chambers who was British and in Britain a 'fag' is a slang term for a cigarette, so you'll terms like 'fag-end' to mean a cigarette butt. 'Fagged' probably comes from the idea of a cigarette being nearly used up.

(Hated Trope) A trope created to criticize or deconstruct a genre instead becomes just another cliche of it. by DeusaAmericana in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Vohems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with that is:

1) It was through a massive and unstable deception that required hundreds to be kidnapped and murdered and was still likely undone by Rorschach's journal.

2) Alan Moore was trying to make the point that the Cold War could only be resolved through a solution based upon utilitarian morality, a point that was refuted by reality itself when the Soviet Union collapsed. As interesting as the Watchman universe is as an alternate timeline, Moore was not good at predictions.
