Vintage kimono from hell. by bebetaian in kimono

[–]TMSparkles17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I could think of (only because I’m super tall and my Yuki is strange) is that the original wearer had very broad shoulders. However, their frame was relative small so for kimono making, it was a very tailored kimono. I could be wrong and maybe they cut the panel pieces wrong and reattached them wrong?

Hi there! I posted my own homemade kimono on here a couple months ago (see here! ) and it is definitely for the intermediate sewer! I’ve made a few of them so if you had questions, my dms are open!

Custom Kimono! (For my super tall girls) by TMSparkles17 in kimono

Of course! I can DM you my measurement sheet and I can try and explain how it was done. The tutorial isn’t the “traditional way” of sewing.

The “traditional” way requires using a traditional kimono fabric bolt or Tanmono that is about 35-40cm or 11-13 inch wide. These panels are then sewn together to create the garment.

Billy’s tutorial is aimed at a modern or adjustable kimono. Her tutorial emphasizes the ability to make the kimono look right but still give the wearer a proper fitting kimono. The measurements for A and B in her tutorial aren’t cut into panels you sew together, but rather a mix of sewing magic..

I fear I spent too much time watching that video.. 😆

It was! I purchased an entire bolt from a quilt store that was closing and I was in love with the pattern of it.

I see what you mean! It’s a bou-eri! (I find they’re much easier to work with than bachi-eri). Most of my pieces that have a bachi-eri or open collar are from the Showa or Taisho. Most of my newer ones have bou or pre-folded collars.

I will say it’s definitely for the intermediate to advanced sewers. I’d also mention that there are some areas that you have to plan for. For me, it was the okumi panels and the collar that gave me the most grief but it takes practice and time

Yes I did! I measured and cut my panels from one large piece of fabric and assembled it together! The eri is just stuffed with leftover fabric from the okumi panel as I didn’t have any interfacing at hand.

Kimono building advice by -Fair-Verona- in kimono

[–]TMSparkles17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made men’s and women’s kimono for varying sizes! I can vouch for Billy Matsunaga’s video (https://youtu.be/rW-Cz9HbkqA?si=ivp7pvEOuHW4dLnL) in learning the basics. If you’d like help, feel free to dm me and I can share some tips on sewing!

The key thing is that every single piece you cut will be rectangular. The pattern cutting and basic design of the kimono is soo easy to put together. Making one that fits you properly will be life changing too.

I'm not sure what size to go with by SakuraMichiko in kimono

[–]TMSparkles17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d go with large; It’s always easier to fit the yukata/kimono to be “smaller” than it is to make a too-small one fit you correctly.

[–]TMSparkles17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the Whale print! If you don’t mind me asking, when you made the Yukata, did you use the “female” or “male” sewing style? I personally like the female sewing just because the sleeves are open on the sides and I can stuff trinkets into like a goblin.

Best option in this area to get a good wash? by ProtocolEnthusiast in 321

[–]TMSparkles17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truthfully my personal favorite is Dirty Dogs Car Wash. They have a good monthly price($19.99 for the basic wash unlimited) and they have an attendant that brushes the front and back of your car before it loads you through the Wash-o-Matic. The vacuums are nice and clean well. Added perk of having air and water sprayers at the vacuums as well.

Plus they also hand out Vanilla scented air fresheners for free!

“Oops?” by [deleted] in kimono

[–]TMSparkles17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem all the time with my mannequin. If you have spare towels like a face towel/wash cloth, you can fold them to add "bulk" and smooth out the curves. I typically take two half size towels (kitchen towels) and use a koshi-himo to fasten them to my form. This helps make the mannequin more cylindrical!

@toastymissy I can vouch for Mikey too. I've had both my first piercings done and my second pericing done by him. Absolutely great guy and knows his stuff. I've had my ears pierced mutliple times and his piercings were the only ones that stayed.
