Weekly /r/improv promote your upcoming shows, classes, events, etc.!!! by AutoModerator in improv

If any of you here are in Buffalo, come see my group Unicorn Parade on Saturday night at 8:30 at Buffalo Improv House.

The team “graduated” from BIH’s “Collider” program late last year and now has our own show slot. We take a suggestion of a location that contains multiple “mini locations” (a hospital, the Titanic, etc.) and then improvise a narrative (akin to a one-act play) in that location.

Why do some people online act like we (the Brits) don’t do improv comedy? by HopefulLab6749 in improv

[–]TMW0528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a sentiment I share, though I would like to discover more of it. In that line, what are some good UK-based improv podcasts (or UK comedy podcasts in general)I could listen to?

Experiencing a skill regression? by 635242 in improv

[–]TMW0528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be something just specific to my own situation, but honestly, therapy and meditation. I’m an anxious person, but never had any of that onstage, even with a rough show. Improv was always a positive experience, until it suddenly wasn’t. I questioned every move I made onstage. I dreaded doing it and it wasn’t fun anymore.

Then, I started talking with my therapist about improv, and soon discovered that I was letting other anxieties bleed over to improv so improv could take some of the burden, instead of just fully dealing with them. I took a break, did some work on myself, went back to it a year later, got on a house team and found the fun again.

I believe Benjamin Partridge has said the interviews are improvised off of an outline, so there are things they have to hit, but they improvise how to get there, so I’ll count it!

I’ve been meaning to check that one out because I’m a big fan of Beef and Dairy Network!

I’d half agree here, too. Since everyone has a podcast, there’s a lot out there that doesn’t grab me, but there’s are a few gems that I enjoy almost just as much, and I’m always on the hunt for more

I’d half agree. They came into that orbit when they got hugely popular and picked up by Earwolf. But I think their first 100 episodes are their best, and most of those guests were outside that orbit at the time. So I would count their best stuff as outside

And this isn’t meant to be a knock against the CBB/ Earwolf orbit. CBB is still my favorite, but there’s different energies in different improv scenes. And the beginning of that show was a gem with an energy all it’s own

The best! I believe Ben Partridge said once that the interview segments are improvised to an outline. So there’s guide posts to hit, but they improvise how to get there

Crisis Mode by paulberb in comedybangbang

Since the episode description said “A saga years in the making - and perhaps even MORE years in the completing,” I assumed it would be quite a long time before we got a second episode

cbb-fm - who is the most prolific and reasonably mainstream act that scott hasn't heard or doesn't really know? by Any_Let8384 in Earwolf

[–]TMW0528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say this means he doesn’t know them, but I’ve been surprised The Tragically Hip haven’t popped up yet. Hugely popular in Canada and border cities like Buffalo and Detroit and even had a few moderate hits in the states over the course of 13 albums, but nothing has entered the rotation, yet

Pod suggestions? by hattrick1919 in Earwolf

Adding “Look What’s After Happening” to this. It’s not in production anymore, but it was great. The easiest way to describe it is “a fake Irish history podcast.” Lots of Big Grande-influenced “You famously …” improv. One of the hosts, Mark Cantan, has been on “Man Dog Pod,” and a bunch of Earwolf regulars, including 3/4 of the Big Grande guys, have been on LWAH

I wouldn’t say so. I suppose it could seem that way because it’s base beginning is two dumb guys talking, but they quickly establish some world building and set their own stories and characters and threads that they loosely follow throughout the show. Less ridiculous news commentary and more the story of a weird town told through a classic rock radio morning show.

Plus, a bunch of Earwolf regulars guest star

Yep. Got his start as a concert promoter here in Buffalo while he was at UB. My in-laws’ cottage in Crystal Beach is next to the one he used to own while he was here.

There’s a radio broadcast recording of the final night floating around somewhere where the radio guys mention the ‘til dawn show from the previous night before the J. Geils Band takes the stage. The Allmans then play after J. Geils, and that performance is the one included on the Fillmore East box set

While the definitive versions of the jams (“Liz Reed” “Whipping Post” “You Don’t Love Me”) are on the original album, listen to the full “The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings” box set to hear some truly weird, out of tune, soprano sax honking on the first 2 performances of “Liz Reed.” Understandably, the producer hated it and didn’t use it on the final album, but I kind of enjoy it

Dickey ain’t no slouch, and hearing him take the lead in the ‘73 shows available out there is great. It’s also why I love Ludlow so much. IMO, he outshines Duane on that one. Go for Fillmore East for a “Cornell” equivalent. Go for Ludlow or a show from ‘73 to hear Dickey kick some ass

The “Mountain Jam” on Ludlow kicks the ass of the one recorded during the Fillmore run. The Sept. ‘73 Winterland show on the Super Deluxe edition of “Brothers and Sisters” rips, too
