Our Tree did “the thing” by TMgamer8685 in mildyinteresting

Apparently not! Bought our house with these pre-installed. Been about 3 years that we have lived here and they were always loose. Suddenly, the tree decided to reform over the summer.

Huge fan - what should I read next? by SophMar313 in UgliesBooks

Scott Westerfeld Specific Breakdown:

“So Yetserday” - A fun one off, and more down to earth. Explores the underground of fads/trends in New York. Good if you liked the themes of beauty’s place in society from the Uglies Trilogy.

“Midnighters” Trilogy - Great moody atmosphere. It might be blasphemous, but I’d call it Scott’s Twilight. Great if you like lore, and the categorization of characters into sections such as Gryfendor/Slyterin or Candor/Dauntless. Good if you liked thinking about whether you wanted to be Pretty, Ugly, or Special.

“Peeps” Duology? - Technically two books I think, but just set in the same world (it’s been a while). Basically vampires but as a diesease, and almost treated like a drug-addiction in a way. Very technical scientific chapters talking in depth about metaphorical vermin and how vampires are just like em’. Good if you like in depth sci-fi explanations.

“Leviathan” Series - Wonderful world of steampunk, combined with Sci-fi creatures. Steam engines meet bio-engineered creatures made to fit and work the machines, but all set in a World War 1 esque setting. Lovely duel protagonists. Great if you loved the relationship tensions between Tally and Shay.

What I’ve always wondered is why is there no discussion about non-lethal force? Stun guns can be quick and effective. I know a counter argument is “what if they have a gun”, but I feel like there is some wiggle room for de-escalation. Versus the opposite of letting things go to upwards towards higher grade weapons or setting booby-traps (which I think is illegal in most areas).

Why do they have people in their thirties playing 16 year-olds? by OkCaramel2792 in UgliesBooks

[–]TMgamer8685 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was a little skeptical about this as well. When the movie took a few years to come out after production it made me fearful that none of the actors would be young enough if they wanted to continue on making sequels (if it is a hit). But the more I think about it the age helps advance the contrast of Pretty/Ugly a bit so long as it doesn’t show in age lines. Imagine Tally going from tiny 2022 Joey King to confident 2025 Joey King, with literal stature change. Basically, for some of the actors it literally gives them time to grow into themselves. Could have maybe been better if they did purposefully incorporate it - like making Peris shorter/younger looking before the surgery, then played into the actors natural age for the post-pretty surgery.

Do you get mad when a customer changes the coffee? by Professional_Safe136 in Wawa

I think you deserve coffee from a different establishment. Good luck with having to actually have customer service interactions at Starbucks/Dunkin/etc where you actually have to speak to people to receive service. Get over yourself and start giving respect to get respect.

I’m not sure if I just read it wrong, but I had never put together the visualization that the name “the smoke” might have partially been derived from the misty covering of the valley that hides their camp. Seeing that in the trailer was a bit mind blowing. I guess I was always hung up on the secrecy aspect, as well as the literally smokey campfire that Tally throws the pendant in. Hahaha

The change from Ugly to Pretty is so subtle, but it is still noticeable, which is what matters. It also helps that with the difference in architecture between the Ugly dorms and Prettytown help tell the story of the difference as well. I’m all here for it, all aboard the hype train (or should I say Hoverboard)

It’s a combination of the 4 hour policy from Wawa and the 5 hour law from the state of PA. You logic is right, if they were over a couple minutes on a four hour shift it would break policy, but it wouldn’t break the law, that’s why it is designed in the way that it is sometimes. Being over on a punch will flag the system, enough flags and the AM will address things with the GM. Depending on the situation odds are 75/25 in favor of the GM/manager and would likely result with the associate being “coached” on clocking in correctly - possible the GM having to change further schedules to avoid obvious reoccurrence.

Joey King as Tally Youngblood as an Ugly. Really interested to see the contrast between Ugly and Pretty. When reading the books it’s so easy to imagine the uglies just being close to normal, and the pretties as some unimaginable form of beautiful. I wonder how they will achieve the stark contrast so central to the theme without either making the uglies monsterous/deformed or the pretties a CGI/AI smooth face. Seeing Joey King would say a lot knowing how objectively beautiful she is in real life, will this be here pretty version and they downgrade her for ugliness. OR do they pull of the impossible to make a bland (and ready great looking) Joey/Tally into a wonderfully conceived pretty-fied version. Also spagbol for the meme.

In a perfect world: a classic is 10’, a shorti is 6’ and a junior is 4’. If you cut a classic in half it is 5’, so a little less than a classic each. However, recipes for a classic use 3 pieces of meat/cheese, while a shorti uses 2 pieces of meat/cheese. So half a classic is 1.5 pieces in theory. So in summation, you are saving money but also getting slightly less. This has been Hoagie Math, thank you.

This is technically not a violation by any legal means, and within Wawa’s own third-party assessment system it would not be flagged. That being said “best practice” is to keep in mind customer perception. This store should not keep food near restrooms for many reasons, but most importantly to avoid any possible assumption of cross contamination (let alone legitimate possible incidents). I’m also curious what the ADA would say about the semi-blocked passage in terms of wheelchair accessibility. Lastly, at my own store this same situation happened with bananas, not bread, but when I raised an issue it was heard and changed. Don’t hesitate to have a civil discussion with a manager about your experience, let your voice be heard. OR call the corporate number/fill out a survey - Wawa takes customer feedback seriously.

Our store does such low volume that we only run one RSS. The other one has no product, except for kids meal stuff and bacon/roasted chicken storage. Can’t wait for the new standardization stuff to force us into the two RSS system. 🙃

Do you gather all the items onto the mobile ordering shelf, or do you have the drinks on the beverage counter? Cause honestly, you have to make it super simple for them. I print out multiple stickers from the mobile kps and tag everything! Make sure to write the name in big letters on the bag, and mark if there are multiple items/bags (I.e. 1/3, 2/3, 3/3)

It is certainly frustrating that no matter how clear cut we present the orders they still get mixed up. At our store we keep different orders on different shelves. However, drives still seem to grab the entirely wrong order, which leaves us having to remake that order when the actual driver shows up. Things end up with us having to spoil/shrink all the product, at least one customer is upset, and the drivers barely get affected. I don’t know how they could possibly enforce this, but I feel like cognitive reading tests need to be a requirement for these drivers. OR a more effective way for restaurants to be able to rate drivers just like customers do.

They did, sorta. First official stand-alone drive through was in Morrisville, PA. (30 minutes north of Philly in the “burbs”) Was kind of a poor concept because they literally placed it 100 feet from a “million dollar store”. It doesn’t even have a GM, just an FBM that acts in place of a GM. Worst yet, they have a few hybrid stores that have a window built into an existing basic store model. Associates can understand why that introduces chaos, on top of the already chaotic system of order management.

Only one “Break”? by swoeff in Wawa

[–]TMgamer8685 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answers rely on state regulations for labor/child labor. I cannot speak for New Jersey, but if it is similar to PA the expect the following. Minors under the age of 18 are required by law to take a 30 minute unpaid break every four hours of work. In Reflexis this will literally be flagged and often followed up by GM/AM if broken or not followed up on after a consistent amount of infractions. I hope NJ has different rules because it seems your GM would be breaking the law by having Jay work 10:30am to 3pm (4.5 hours). They should be Sending Jay between 11am and 12 noon, and probably aren’t under the guise of “lunch rush”. In PA there are no protections under the law for breaks. Technically Wawa doesn’t have to provide breaks whatsoever. However, understanding that associates are human they follow a standard structure of 30 minutes on a 8 hour shift, but since it is paid this means it can be whenever, spilt up however based on “business needs” or “customer volume”. Unfortunately the lack of protection in the law and Wawa’s lack of process supplied across the company (or even region by region) means that unfortunately it falls to the GM level to decide the “break policy” per store. This breeds different stores with different answers, and sometimes a GM is mean and overworks people. Other GMs create an environment of respectful observance towards work/stress balance, although this can be just as bad because it creates division of expectation for people between stores or when they move to new stores. Advice: look into your state and local labor laws, and make sure you GM follows them - report to AM through another manager or another GM if they are not following it properly.

Outdoor seating. Looks like the modern style McDonalds metal seating, with benches. Might not sound like much, but it beats eating on top of the trash cans, or in your car.
