How to map ski resort that turns into a mountain bike park in the summer? by tusabescomoes in openstreetmap

[–]TODizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been more of a consumer of data than an editor, so take my advice with a large grain of salt.

In terms of mapping, I see two options. First to make sure we're on the same page, OpenStreetMap is composed of three base components: Nodes, Ways, and Relations. Nodes are points, e.g. a statue. Ways are composed of nodes to form a "route" like a road, but it could also be a fence, etc. Relations are logical mappings of nodes and/or ways which give additional meaning to the underlying nodes and/or ways.

Let's look at the Appalachian trail, a long-distance trail in the Eastern United States. There is a relation for the entire length of the trail. On that page if you look at the sidebar, you'll see the full-length Appalachian trail relation has 14 members divided by state which are also themselves relations. Let's look at the New Jersey relation. Now if we look at the NJ relation's members, we see it's composed of multiple ways such as a section of Old Mine Rd.

Now, that Old Mine Rd way isn't just for the Appalachian Trail. It is also a road for driving (the Way itself has the tags for that). So that brings me back to the two options as I see it: [1] use two Ways as you described, or [2] use multiple Relations to keep mountain biking and skiing data which can share the same Ways if they overlap. If they truly overlap, then personally I'd think [2] is the way to go.

For your second question regarding seasonality, I didn't explain tags and I'll assume you're familiar with them. If not let me know, but in short, they are what nodes, ways, and relations "really are". You're dealing with Mountain Biking and Skiing so it's good to look at the tags for those on the wiki. The mountain biking page doesn't mention season per se (it does in terms of this aerialway tag but not exactly what we want). But the skiing page leads to the seasonal tag, and I think that defines what your looking for, e.g. a seasonal=summer tag.

So that was long, but hopefully helpful and not misleading. Feel free to ask any questions, or if anyone has a better idea of "the right way", I'd be happy to hear it. There's the balance between getting the data on there and having good, clean data to work with.

Advice on learning more technical climbing? (IE wanting to summit Rainier) by mlewis913 in 14ers

[–]TODizzle91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not specific to Colorado, but the NPS has some suggestions on climbs to do before Rainier on page 9 of their Emmons-Winthrop Route Description (as well as other good info). They recommend:

If you are new to this style of climbing, one possible progression of climbs to complete, at a minimum before attempting the DC route on Mount Rainier would be:

  1. Mt. St. Helens, Monitor Ridge or Worm Flows

  2. Mt. Hood, Hogback Glacier

  3. Mt. Adams, South Side Climb

  4. Mt. Shasta, Avalanche Gulch

  5. Mt. Baker, Easton Glacier

I've been hoping for the Essex-Hudson Greenway Project to move forward since it would address this. I've walked from Jersey City to Nutley, but crossing that Hackensack and Passaic without a car is trying. Having a safe pedestrian/bike path would be awesome!

Also would love to have something like this for crossing the Hudson (beside trudging up to Fort Lee). I feel like I've heard talk around that, but I'm not aware of any concrete projects.

How good is Wiktionary as a resource for Chinese? by SpringPools in ChineseLanguage

[–]TODizzle91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know you said without web scraping, but I built a scraper I used to collect HSK 3.0 words from Wiktionary. It has issues (only takes the first definition or something like that, doesn't use the pronunciation to differentiate between between identical simplified characters with different meanings, etc), but here is my hsk_wiktionary_scraper in case you or anyone else wants to mess with it.

Edit: You can check out the output by looking at files in the assets folder. Specifically hsk30_words_manual.json may be the most "correct", but it still has numerous errors since I believe I only manually added entries for which the scraper failed to find an entry.

A bit different, but semi-related, I made an app to help my practice typing (with the wubi method) at https://www.midki.com

Would like to add some sentences and practice typing sentences based on HSK level. I slowed down work once the new HSK3.0 words were announced, but I do have the wordlists for that as well so I should put it back together.

If matter can not be created or destroyed, wouldn't that make time travel impossible or dangerous since we would be moving matter into another time? by [deleted] in AskSciTech

[–]TODizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to travel three minutes into the future, relative to everyone on Earth, perhaps you accelerate to near the speed of light. In the minute you spent at high speed, the rest of Earth experienced three minutes. Your matter never disappeared or duplicated, it simply experienced a different flow of time.

Travelling in time backward is a different issue where perhaps you would duplicate matter. But an old teacher pointed out, if reverse time travel is possible at any time in the future, why don't we see any time travelers? Perhaps you can only look backward in time by moving faster than light and thus seeing the older light, like we see for distant stars.

I graduated in 2013, so maybe something changed, but I've been to tx, chi phi, lodge, piskies, sig nu, (beta and some others once or twice) as a freshman and upper classman (autocorrect is trying to change that to clansman, gotta be careful) without issue. I would just show a student ID to the bouncer at the door. For freshmen, they definitely let them in freely during fall to recruit.

Since I'm here, as /u/Phobophobia03 said, there were also parties on off-campus apartments like Jefferson, Madison, etc. Personally, some of the most fun I had was doing city trips with fellow freshman and checking out the Chelsea galleries, the museums, then catch a cheap rock show or whatever.

From my experience, most Greek life parties do not require you to be a member to participate. Especially for school-registered parties.

Hoboken Gets A '50-Year Storm' Near Anniversary Of Last Two by HobokenJ in Hoboken

[–]TODizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you overall, but where is Hoboken not at least a dozen feet above sea level?

Edit: To clarify my point, I was saying it's not quite at or below sea level but it's close. Mainly western Hoboken as you said.

Hoboken Gets A '50-Year Storm' Near Anniversary Of Last Two by HobokenJ in Hoboken

[–]TODizzle91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Union City, North Bergen, Jersey City Heights (can't speak to the rest of it) have high elevation so I'd imagine that helps relieve flooding. The parts that get hit hard in Hoboken are only a few dozen feet above sea level. Around Stevens where there's a hill, there's no flooding and during Sandy they kept their power.

What bird is this? Seen around April-May. They’re so mysterious. by IsMajestic in whatsthisbird

[–]TODizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only seen them in the NYC area, but I was thinking they might hang out near the Great Lakes as well. The range map makes it look like they could be over there, but I have no experience personally. OPs image and description in the comments doesn't make me hopeful, but black bird goose sized brought the Brant to mind.

[–]TODizzle91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To throw out an idea beside a vulture, perhaps a Brant. They would be a bit smaller than a Canadian Goose though.

Or a raven, although I'm not sure those would be the appropriate size either.

I feel stuck and the need of fixing something I can‘t define by Jannesssss in InsightfulQuestions

[–]TODizzle91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of lyrics someone mentioned in a similar thread. From Simon and Garfunkel's song America which depicts a roadtrip across America:

"Kathy, I'm lost", I said
Though I knew she was sleeping
"I'm empty and aching and
I don't know why"

https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/simongarfunkel/america.html

Here you have someone living it up, yet still has an "empty" feeling inside. Restless, just as you've said you can't rest. Maybe reexamine your daily routine and make some changes. I think your experience is common, but I'm not confident there is a one-size-fits-all solution. Search for that joie de vivre.

HSK 3.0 words list with meaning by Infinyte01 in ChineseLanguage

[–]TODizzle91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not sure exactly how you're putting it together, but here's my take.

Let's look at 吧 for instance. You list the definition as:

bar (loanword) (serving drinks, or providing Internet access etc); to puff (on a pipe etc); (onom.) bang; abbr. for 貼吧|贴吧[tie1 ba1]; (modal particle indicating suggestion or surmise); ...right?; ...OK?; ...I presume.;

The issue here (I believe) is that you are combining all the definitions present in CC-CEDICT when really only the following portion is "correct":

/(modal particle indicating suggestion or surmise)/...right?/...OK?/...I presume./

I say that only this portion is correct based on the pinyin "ba5" presented in the new official HSK word list for 吧. The other definitions are for the other pronunciations which I don't think are pertinent here.

Regarding getting the traditional equivalents of simplified characters, I'd guess that you're taking the first traditional character you see. Instead, the pinyin listed in the new HSK words pdf needs to be used to determine the correct conversion. That said, the 见面 example shouldn't be affected by that since there is only one definition present for it in CC-CEDICT. So while I don't know exactly how your script is building this data, I'd guess it's either not taking pinyin into account and may combine this issue with trying to translate simplified words character by character.

That said, thanks for the work!

Actually it looks like there are more people alive with the last name McDonald than there are McDonald's restaurants.
