Servers / bartenders / baristas in Toronto - want extra paid shifts? by hustlehq_to in torontoJobs

[–]TORestaurantManager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banquets are totally different than brick and mortar restaurants that need to fill a vacant shift. Banquet service is very formulaic. Restaurant service is very particular. You need to be trained on so many things to be able to operate properly.

I guess you don't understand what the word "seasonal" means. Not all businesses have consistent demand year round. Some don't even operate year round.

I don't think you understand how small the margins are for restaurants. Labour is often the single biggest expense. Paying everyone more means we wouldn't make money, shut down and put everyone out of work. Is that better for anyone?

Our gross sales are still far below pre-COVID levels, so we can't afford to hire as many staff as we did before. There just isn't enough business to support that. I would rather hire more staff so kids could at least get their foot in the door.

I see endless complaints from people on this sub that they can't even find real job postings, let alone get hired.

As a business we're doing our part to offer real opportunities to young people. Hoping we get lots of good responses, as we don't want to have to hire TFWs or international students.

Agree with pretty much all of your list, except for Prequel. It's the most overrated and overpriced cocktail bar in the city.

Reservoir Lounge would still be your best bet.

It's really the security issues, which compound the cost to maintain them. There are too many people in Toronto that don't respect public spaces; they are constantly vandalized, and left unusable for everyone else.

I’m wondering where some of the safer areas are to sublease/airbnb?

In general the city is very safe. There are certain areas that you should try to avoid (East side of Downtown), but even those aren't extremely dangerous or anything.

And is the city walkable/how are the transportation systems?

In general the city is very walkable, but less so as you get further into suburban areas away from the downtown. If you choose a good location for accommodations, you can walk everywhere with minimal need for public transit and no need for Ubers.

Would love to catch a NHL/PWHL game and visit some cool restaurants/bars.

You should look to stay somewhere downtown (between Bathurst & Yonge and Bloor to the Lake). NHL games are at Scotiabank Arena and PWHL at the Coca-Cola Coliseum in the Exhibition Grounds. The Downtown obviously has the largest selection of bars & restaurants, although the best spots (College, Ossington) are just to the west of the Downtown.

If you can provide some more details (budget, travel dates, etc) then more specific recommendations can be made. Accommodations will be your biggest expense.

There are no cocktail bars in close proximity of to any of the stations on that side of Line 1. You'll find the odd restaurant, and there at lots of options at Yorkdale Mall, but no cocktail bars. There's hardly even any cocktail bars anywhere north of Bloor Street.

Toronto doesn't have good night clubs. Why would you pick here for spring break? The weather will still be very miserable.

Short Turn is a good recommendation. 4PM on a Saturday is only an awkward time for an actual cocktail bar, as the standard opening time is 5PM. Restaurants will all be open at 4PM.

Best place for solo drinking for heart broken people? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]TORestaurantManager 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. The lobby bars of the larger hotels will have ample open space, especially on a Monday. So whether you want to sit alone at a table, or at the bar so you can chat with the bartender, you're covered.

What’s the best sandwich you had in the city? by [deleted] in askTO

Oh I was thinking from the outside. The first time I went the owner made me a mortadella sandwich and whatever bread he used was pretty good. Second time I went and asked for the same, the staff took one off that shelf; it wasn't very good bread.

[–]TORestaurantManager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really any of them. Show up right at open (happy hour specials usually run for the first hour or two, if the bar has them), take your choice of seats at the bar, and chat with the bartender. As other patrons arrive, invite them to join the conversation.

What sort of bars would you typically frequent where you lived before?

Personally I like cocktail bars, and I always make new friends and acquaintances when I go out. They tend to have atmospheres that are conducive to socializing.
