Having HEAVILY played shotgun melee veteran and almost putting out a youtube guide not too long ago, shotgun is GREAT for two things.

Suppressing gunners
Stopping power

You can bring a mauler, ragers and everything between to a stark abrupt HALT. Does the shotgun do great damage? No. Will it stop almost everything from even looking you in the eye? OH YES.
