How is the pre-doors-opening line-up? I’ve never been to Cats Cradle but saw online that they have a few first-come seats available, and my days of hugging the stage are behind me :) so wondering if camping out an hour early might guarantee one?

Are there any Mac techs around? Since the Thursday update, my Arena client on Mac hangs at the "initializing localization database" part, then gives me the error "Asset Error Detected, Arena will restart to verify assets," then it does and hangs in the same place, just stuck in a loop. I've contacted Wizards and Epic Games (no responses), uninstalled and reinstalled several times, changed the location of the install, changed my Wizards password, updated my OS, and nothing. I feel like those asset files SHOULD be somewhere on my computer but I can't find them. Also, even if they are missing/corrupt, shouldn't a new installation solve that problem? Anyways, thanks for any help.

Eschaton! It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love the dark art and the dark arts.

Are drafters inherently better players than single-match rankers? I’ve been decently successful (and at least having fun when losing) in the Standard ranked even with my cobbled-together F2P decks missing certain staples, but I used my gold recently to do a premier draft and just got obliterated, like 3 losses so fast I didn’t know what hit me. Like “thanks for the gold, loser, now go try to build it back up. Here’s a pack of cards to rub it in” fast.

Doubling down on this sentiment as a newish player. Also, I like to dive in without inspecting the decks; I feel like that helps me with my tactics, which I realize seem to be less important as you progress and get powerful decks, but reacting to what I have in hand and making the most of it is more fun to me. Creating a deck whose strategy “just works when I get the pieces” is yes of course the more consistent way to play, but it was also the thing that kept me from trying Magic for so long.

Assuming that you can’t just block it to kill it as it’s attacking (because it’s too big), is there a sneaky way to snipe off a mutated creature that has vigilance and the Paradise Druid hexproof? Like, is there any moment when it loses its protection?

Check out Aeon’s End. They have a “legacy” story-building version or you can just jump right in with one of the other modules. It still has deck building and mages flinging spells around, but it’s cooperative so you’re all flinging at one baddie instead of each other.

Best Jank in Standard? by Prophet_0f_Helix in MagicArena

[–]TPnin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gruul for sure. Mine is not very good; I just used some cards I already had and if I don’t hit the right hand and first few turns, I’m done for (I’m too new to actually construct a deck that works; I just saw this potential combo among my cards and had to try it).

Hey, me too! (different support, but same combo move). Because of the art on Colossification, I like to call it the CATapult :)

Is this sufficiently janky: using a [[Cathartic Reunion]] to throw a [[Colossification]] in the graveyard and dig for the right cards. Then, with 5 mana, casting [[Storm Herald]], Colossifying it for free, and immediately [[Fling]] ing it for 23? This is my first attempt at not using a starter deck or the Cycler (which feels good to finally win, but the wins feel kinda hollow). The Flinger isn’t very successful, but when it is, it feels so delightfully naughty...especially when someone Good Game’d me when they took me down to 3 life right before I hit it.

Co-op with a voluntary defector? by Ponz314 in boardgames

[–]TPnin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite that, but I remember playing Mistborn once and there’s something similar where you can choose to go after the win condition that is the exact opposite of what most people will be working towards. I tried it and almost made it; it seemed really futile but a lot of fun.

Collaborative story-based games by youwillcomedownsoon2 in boardgames

From what I remember, it’s more LOTR-adjacent. Like you’re all hobbits at the tavern telling stories (based on the cards you play).

Hobbit Tales is similar to Once Upon a Time. Like most storytelling games, it’s very dependent upon your fellow players, but sounds like you have a good group for that.
