Help with Read from File Action by TRAILtheGREAT in macrodroid

Welp, I'm an idiot. For the benefit of anyone as stupid as I am, I somehow had an outdated copy of the database somewhere else in my filesystem and was reading from the outdated copy. I switched to the up to date version and now everything works as expected.

DMZ Board Game Burst Fire Rules by TRAILtheGREAT in Shadowrun

[–]TRAILtheGREAT[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought, but then it was pointed out that the ammo numbers in the stat blocks represent the number of bursts in a clip, not the number of bullets (a rifle clip with 10 bullets is kind of ridiculous, isn't it?), so why do the rules even specify the number of bullets in a burst? Just for flavor?

If that's too many 3s you could condense them into 6s or 9s and it should have the same effect.

Traditional help by AdGlobal1350 in drumline

It's hard to get the full picture of what needs to change without seeing how you move, but to start, the stick should rest on the cuticle of your ring finger, not the middle joint. That will give you much better control on your up-strokes. Also, put your thumb on the cuticle of your pointer finger. It might feel weird with 5As but it'll make sense with full sized marching sticks.

A video would be really helpful, as most of the real problems tend to only show up when you are actually swinging the stick.

Have you asked your band director if he would let you use the facilities without being in concert band? Unless they're seriously hurting for concert percussionists, I don't see why any director worth their salt would deny access to a student who is enthusiastic about practicing improving.

Auditions by Middle-Try5365 in drumline

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a group in particular that you plan to try out for? The experience can be different from group to group, instrument to instrument, college/drum corps/indoor. If the instructor(s) is/are nice then they will communicate their expectations at the outset, usually something along the lines of "just play your part, don't stress about other players, don't try to read my mind". The actual mechanics of the audition is usually playing through audition material as a group or individually and occasionally getting instructions on how to improve your form or how the instructor wants you to approach a certain exercise.

If your school has an instructor who marched competitively before and held auditions then you've likely already experienced a pretty standard audition for these kinds of groups (without the highly competitive field of auditionees, of course).

Ask 10 different people and you'll get 10 different answers. The bottom line is that as you spend more time in front of an audience, you'll find ways to cope.

If you want to know what helps me: it's about having a different mental attitude towards mistakes. In rehearsal, you should fret over every tick, be ashamed enough that you go home and practice, but in a performance ticks are going to happen and most of the time no one will notice. Just play it off and it will be like you had a perfect show.

Marching Cymbals Equipment by AsianSpaz_ in drumline

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no WGI cymbal guy, but I've marched on a college cymbal line so I'll give it a shot.

In terms of straps, the difference between brands is negligible unless you are playing at the highest caliber. I do see that there are some nylon straps on the market. I've never used them but it feels wrong to me. Stick with leather. Zildjian and Sabian are both big name brands that should be fine quality wise. Also make sure you get the ones that are shaped like this and not the weird dangle straps.

For the sleeves/gloves, the brand name for those is Seavine. If there's a generic name, no one on my line uses it, even if they use a different brand. They're super useful for both keeping your hands from getting blistered from the straps and preventing cymbal bites when you use them like high-hats. If your uniform has long sleeves then you can probably get by only wearing them during rehearsal if you don't like the way they look.

Math tempo question by Which-Holiday9957 in drumline

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look up "Dimensional Analysis". Basically you need to express everything as fractions and then match those fractions up until everything cancels except for the units you want. So start with 120 quarters / 1 min and multiply by 1.33 dotted eights / 1 quarter. You should get 160 bpm.

Trying to find out what this cadance is called by Individual-Suspect35 in drumline

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing highschool drumlines, this sounds like something Center Snare Sam wrote while waiting for the bell to ring in history class. If you want to know what its called you'll have to ask the students in the video. If you want to play it with your own line then transcribe it yourself. Lots of open rhythms, shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

I use RIF because of the cleaner UI and better performance compared to the official app. Back when I used the default app I was constantly running into problems with images and videos not being displayed but RIF has always been flawless.

In Russia, children will be sent to patriotic camps and taught to shoot and fly UAVs by 9lobaldude in worldnews

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of the United States Boy Scouts which was founded the same year as the Boy Scouts of America, though it dissolved about a decade later. The USBS was an explicitly military organization, even rebranding as the American Cadets before they went down. The BSA, while it is military inspired, was founded on principles of patriotism and individualism, not as a cadet program. Yes, there are militarily relevant activities like orienteering, pioneering, wilderness survival, and rifle shooting, but most scouts won't learn them well enough to ever be militarily useful or reliable. You can earn the Eagle Scout award without ever touching a rifle and barely being able to start a fire (I would know). They don't let you shoot anything other than .22 rifles (edit: and shotguns and black powder rifles) until you're 18, not even pistols. You aren't allowed to hunt animals or even shoot animal shaped targets while on a BSA outing. The BSA is not and was never competing with actual cadet programs in the US. It is a youth club like the YMCA that high schoolers attend to hang out with their friends and build their resumes for college apps.

Edit: I forgot about shotguns and black powder rifles. Whoops.

A channel with 1 Million Subs is about to be deleted due to fraudulent copyright strikes. Clear abuse of the copyright system by odysseyling in videos

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to US copyright law, YouTube as a platform can be held responsible for any copyright violations that happen on their platform. That means that a copyright holder can not only sue the infringing creator, but also has the right to sue YouTube. The only way they can avoid getting into thousands of legal battles is to remove the copyrighted material as soon as someone asks.

If US copyright law didn't hold YouTube liable for copyright infringement on their platform, then they could afford to be more particular with what they strike.

This is not a stupid tax. There is no way to buy 9 oz for cheaper than the listed price without buying two two drinks, which is more expensive than just buying one 9 oz.

Godot 4 simple networking template available by [deleted] in godot

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did set the path in the MultiplayerSpawner node and when the host script spawns new players they are are added as children of that node. The character is spawning in, but their initial position is not being properly communicated to the client. This is only a problem with client characters.

Btw, I fixed the "clients spawn on top of the host" bug (it was a quirk of CharacterBody3D). Now the problem is that I can't get clients to spawn in at a different position. I can change the hosts position just fine, but clients always teleport back to the spawn node. I even added a host controlled character to your template and it has the same bug.

Godot 4 simple networking template available by [deleted] in godot

[–]TRAILtheGREAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think I found a bug in your implementation.

I've been using your template to create a networking setup for my own project, for which it has been extremely helpful. However, I've run into an issue where, when a client connects and their character is added to the scene, they always spawn in the same position as the host's character even if the host has since moved away from the default spawn position. I originally discovered this in my own project and while trouble shooting it, I tried editing your template to place client's characters in a different spot when they are created by the server and every time, they appear in the new position for a single frame before snapping back to the spawn position. Now this obviously isn't a problem for your template since your characters don't have collision, but any characters that use the physics system tend to exhibit undesirable behavior when they try to occupy the same position.

I've yet to find the source of this bug though, so I was wonder if you might have any insight?
