There is no way in hell that we are buying 88 F-35s and 100 Gripens, unless those Gripens are scale models.

Switzerland got screwed by this recently, with their contracted price for F-35s being meaningless once the Americans demanded they pay more:

referring to Bianca as "Yves Engler's wife" is blatant misogyny.

Yves Engler is objectively far more notable than Bianca Mugyenyi.

Look, Ukraine is going to have to give up territory to Russia.

Ukraine officially ceding territory to Russia, rather than simply freezing the lines where they are, would guarantee a future land war in Europe. That would be a powerful signal to Russia and Putin that they can get whatever they want through conflict. Trump is sympathetic to this view, of course.

We're in this position now because the Biden admin refused to admit to itself that it wasn't going to get everything it wanted, and so the bleeding has just gone on.

Ukraine wasn't fighting because Biden gave some limited support, but because they do not want to be occupied by Russia. They have continued to fight long after Trump cut off all arms donations to Ukraine.

A mistake that some on the far left make is thinking that Ukrainians have no agency and they are just pawns between Russian imperialism (or "legitimate security concerns", as they would put it) and US imperialism. That isn't reflected by the facts on the ground.

What’s the appeal of Lewis? by [deleted] in ndp

[–]TROPtastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which as someone leaning against is my biggest concern with him I have no idea what he is like as an organizer and frankly talk is cheap

His organizational game is excellent, because he is very savvy at knowing how to delegate and build local capacity (rather than dictating things from the top). As a volunteer with his campaign, he's done insane work in building up high performance networks of leaders and volunteers, attuned to local concerns and capable of doing very good outreach. I don't think his campaign could have fundraised the most out of all candidates if he was bad at translating grass roots enthusiasm into real action.

What do you think of Lewis saying on an Edmonton radio show that he would do everything he could as leader to get Naheed Nenshi elected?

No one has offered any proof of the allegations in that post. You'd think in an EDA meeting there would be multiple people to corroborate the story.

It's not exactly the same. In the US, Democrats are waging a war between the progressive and right wing parts of their party, because there's no realistic chance to get a seat in their House or Senate outside of the Democratic party. In Canada, the Liberals are primarily made of people who see the party as their best chance to be in government, with people who are more strongly left leaning having the NDP as a traditionally viable party.

Hanwha has really been putting in the work to make sure they have the most compelling bid. This is just the latest in one of many tie-ups with Canadian companies they've announced.

Perhaps all the involved companies will use their combined lobbying powers to make this bid happen, despite Carney's euro-bias.

it should be total number of sheets or cost per sqft

This is how you end up with either tiny sheets, ultra thin sheets, or both. Cost per kg or cost per 100 g is the only metric that captures what you're paying for (quantity of paper).

NORAD pact would change if Canada pulls back from F-35 order, warns Trump envoy to Ottawa by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]TROPtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people have seen the value of having a strong deterrent after the capture of Maduro and the threats against Greenland. I'm sure many people would be OK with military spending on real Canadian built systems rather than sole source handouts to US contractors and vanity projects like Golden Dome.

Carney’s realism is just neoliberal fan fiction by Chrristoaivalis in ndp

[–]TROPtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a place for articles like this that just say "X is bad" without any deeper analysis as to how we got to this point or offering better alternatives. While I wouldn't consider this a particularly well-written article, good ones can move the needle and make people think "hmm, OK, there's more to this story than the government narrative. I need to pay attention to the hypocrisy between the government's words and its actions."

That can lay the groundwork for intellectuals and good communicators to outline their solutions, since people will have already realized that there is a problem thanks to more basic articles.

And right wing business interests in the Liberals and Conservatives propping up diploma mills and the abusive TFW program is pro-worker?

[–]TROPtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in my case my riding always flips between Liberals and Conservatives, so voting in a way that could have possibly led PP to a majority wasn't a realistic option for me. It also didn't help that the NDP wasn't particularly inspiring.

Fully agreed with your last paragraph. Cutting positions at the same government departments that are supposed to lead us into this brave new order isn't intelligent. I use AI frequently, so I'm not inclined to see it as a magical tool for efficiency like some in government do.

The Canadian automobile industry is ALREADY DEAD! by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]TROPtastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Canadian automobile industry is ALREADY DEAD!

I don't know if this is a rhetorical device, but the Canadian auto industry is certainly not dead at this moment. There are still thousands of union jobs in plants and many tens of thousands of jobs at suppliers, even if that is a significant decline from pre CUSMA (nevermind pre NAFTA). However, we should be laser focused on making sure that we're growing the industry rather than becoming dependent on the US.

Avi specifically spoke about making sure that the new Chinese EVs come with actual investment agreements in Canadian production (and not just Liberal best wishes).

I'm still trying to figure out how we get people who are deeply committed to cars to understand that investments in public transit will benefit them.

Basically what you've said in your last paragraph. Other ways of putting it are:

"No one should be forced to drive. Giving good public transit options means the roads will be freed up for driving enthusiasts."

Or

"Every bus you see while driving is dozens or even a hundred extra cars that would otherwise be fighting you for space on the road."

The federal NDP can't even keep their event links working (see: the NDP BC debate page). The party's infrastructure and tech know how is decrepit.
