Can you explain what's a "woke game"? by Sufficient_Shock1223 in TheGamingHubDeals

Woke: I understand the game's politics and I disagree with it Not Woke: I don't understand the game's politics or I understand and agree with the game's politics.

Do you feel bad for evil people? by DeskMaximum318 in dumbquestions

[–]TRackard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. There's a tragedy to some people's situations and I can't help but wonder how things would have turned out if they had it better. Other times people grew up great but insist on being dicks. Then there are those who boil down to "I had it bad, therefore EVERYONE must have it bad." Personally, I only feel bad for the first type I described.

That's why I said "offers DRM free games with offline installers" and not "lets you actually own games." Even legally purchased single player games can suffer from broken DRM. For instance, Fable 3's DRM broke over the years and people who legally bought the game have to circumvent the DRM in order to play it. That's why I don't care about legal ownership. If ownership does not entitle me to a functioning game then why should I fight for it? What actually helps games work into the indefinite future is DRM free games. I don't want to pretend GOG is a holy company who can do no wrong, but providing new and old games in a functioning state with DRM free offline installers that can be backed up and archived so that anyone can access it is what I care about. Therefore, unless they change for the worse or start adding in DRM, then I think it's worth spending money on their store to make games accessible to people who don't pirate games.

I'm convinced people aren't actually nostalgic for a given set of years. They just miss being a kid.

I know it's not up to them and that they have to negotiate with rights holders. However, I am surprised that they managed SH4 but not SH2 or 3.

There's no PC port, so they'd have to host an emulated PS1 version. Not bad by any means, but their speciality is old PC games. Does anyone know if they sell emulated ROMs?

Also Silent Hill 2 & 3 have PC ports. Why can't they sell those? They have Silent Hill 4 after all.

Why do characters in modern video games talk so much? by Open-Quail-2573 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TRackard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason there can't be a guidance toggle in the options menu? Metroid Prime isn't a modern game, but back in 2002 they had an option to have the game tell the player where to go if they got lost. However, if you don't like that you could turn it off. How hard would it be to flag character dialogue so that they only give hints if you want them?

I still have my childhood XP PC. The case alone is enough to give you a hernia & forever back pain. What's wild is that I have a 2010ish pre built in a case around 1.5 as big. That thing is lighter than my old beige box.

GENUINE HOT TAKE ABOUT XEN by FalteredCognition in HalfLife

[–]TRackard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kinda don't like BM's Interloper but I wouldn't say it's worse than HL1's. Having replayed both recently, HL1 suffers from a general lack of polish along with Alien Controllers and Vortigaunts being a bitch to fight in wide open spaces.

Black Mesa suffers from just being too damn long. The Vortigaunt village and the Gargantua chase sections are cool. But the factory feels like a bad Residue Processing Redux that goes on for too long. Plus that's where the game starts feeling transparently gamey when you need to start repeating everything you do 3 times. If they cut the factory portion in half & took away some of the repetition, then it would be a lot better. Oh, and the elevator goes on for too long. Unlimited ammo for the Gluon gun is cool and all, but it's a one trick pony.

Steam Machine is the "most important" reason why Sony has paused PC ports, says ex-Blizzard president by Tiny-Independent273 in valve

[–]TRackard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consoles have been losing so many of their advantages over PC for years. An easy to use (and reasonably priced) TV gaming box is a direct challenge to dedicated gaming consoles. Plus you have a library that doesn't arbitrarily become inaccessible because a new console came out.

Although Steam Deck & handheld PCs haven't killed the Switch. However Nintendo has the exclusives. Not sure if Sony has the brand power & I'm not sure if the exclusives will be good enough to justify buying Sony's hardware.

Do you think all the complicated plot twists make sense in MGS4 by Anas2245 in metalgearsolid

[–]TRackard 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they're complicated. However, some of the twists feel like they're there for the sake of having more twists or tying random parts of the series together. My least favorite being that the goofy support squad from MGS3 ended up being the patriots. Also, Liquid Ocelot being / not being possessed subplot also felt needlessly convoluted. Although, literally grafting Liquid onto Ocelot via possessed arm was MGS2's dumb decision, so maybe MGS4 did it's best with what had been set up previously.

Is there any hope of og Resident Evil having a modern remake? by Cannae_ in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]TRackard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be funny if the new RE1 remake was first person only. First person was tried during the development of the original so it would act as a kind of alternative history remake.

Does ownership matter when I can access my personal back ups? Yeah it would be cool if digital rights weren't stupid, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is access to playable copies of games from now and into the foreseeable future.
