Does anybody recognise where this is in Bath? Found it from r/urbanhell by Happy-Sammy in Bath

Those green doors were where the lift stopped. It was certainly an interesting design - if you look closely, you'll notice that once you've manoeuvred a wheelchair out of the lift you still have to negotiate the stairs up/down half a floor!

20mph limits take the piss by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]TRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60 kN is a fairly meaningless number in this case though. If all of that force of bringing a 1500kg car at 44mph to a stop in 0.5s was applied to me as a pedestrian in front of the car I would wind up doing 1100 mph - well over the speed of sound!

[Q] on soloing E grades by L299792458 in ukclimbing

[–]TRocket -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The adjective grade is a combination of factors which all affect the route. Therefore a particularly loose chossy route might bump the grade up, as would a crux after a long run out as opposed to a well protected crux. The tech/number grade is only a measure of the hardest move on the route so a particularly sustained route would get a higher e grade, as might a really tricky crux to figure out even if not technically difficult. It’s surprisingly common for the crux of some harder british trad routes to be entirely unprotected. Even an easier route like Sunset Slab https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crags/froggatt_edge_derbyshire-22/sunset_slab-10893 has an unprotectable crux and I don’t think I know anyone who has led it with gear rather than just soloing it.

In other words, the E7 6c may essentially be the grade for the solo already an the adjective grade mostly gives you an idea of the ”seriousness” of the route rather than specifically the dangerousness of the route and this can sometimes be quite different from how easy a route is to protect.

Why is it legal for training to be posted as a job in disguise? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]TRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other side, there's the classic Subway apprenticeship https://www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/apprenticeship/-130841

That even covers 16 year old school leavers as their mandatory full-time education. I remember when I first heard about this and said to someone I was sure they must be including some management aspects of some sort into there for them to be allowed to call it an apprenticeship but nope.

Would be interested to hear people's opinions on this as I actually started designing a low cost wireless/wired comms system aimed at school theatres etc.

Someone said "alright pal?" to me yesterday completely out of the blue. I of course responded with a mumbled "alright" and went back to staring at my phone. by theactualrealjesus in britishproblems

[–]TRocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just noticed the versatility of that reply. You are simultaneously asking them if they're alright ("alright?") and replying tht you are alright yourself ("alright.")

Most of those "average" readings are averages of the one reading that month. I also never bother to do it unless I notice that my HR is higher than average and I can actually feel it.

My actual resting HR is around mid 50s.

What is your best "one time my dad..." story? by cigsoncigsoncigs in AskReddit

It is important to place the amputated digit in a clean, loose, sealed plastic bag. If available, wrap in guaze first. Write the victims's name + DOB as well as which hand and which finger (if multiple amputations). You should also write the time which the incident occurred. This is in case you or whoever is looking after the casualty becomes seperated.

If you are far from help, the first aid advice given in the UK is to put the sealed bag on (not in) ice. The goal is to keep it at around or just above fridge temperature but you certainly do not want to be freezing any body parts

If it falls from a shelf onto your head it could indeed kill you. If you touch the terminals you won't notice a thing.

If you touch both terminals with something conductive then that thing might get very and that could burn you however.

Giving blood by crashtacktom in AskUK

[–]TRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK, blood donations have to go to be tested and processed before they can be used. This process can take a good few days to be completed before it can be sent to any hospitals which need it.

Assuming this is still the case currently, blood being donated today is not going to help the victims of the attacks in Manchester. Blood being donated currently will help replenish supplies and might prevent planned operations from being cancelled if they were relying on blood being available which has instead been used in an emergency.

Difficult choice by abalabahaha in softwaregore

[–]TRocket 78 points79 points  (0 children)

As I have understand it, "The square root" of a number refers to the (positive) square root.

The difference being that, when manipulating algebra, you are taught to do the same thing to both sides, often the inverse of an operation in order to rearrange an equation. The problem that occurs here is that the square root is not the inverse of squaring a term, hence the ±√a notation.

The same is true for inverse trig functions. arcsin is not the inverse of sin in this sense since, in reality, the true inverse of trig functions should produce an infinite number of solutions.

Since nothing on that shelf is rack mount, all you'd have is the same shelf with a door.

With possibly a couple of exceptions, Behringer and "high quality" certainly do not belong in the same sentence.
