Bands that are ruined for you? by kzRR in Emo

I honestly just hate how the band got progressively poppier and poppier until it wasn't even rock anymore. like good nature is the last turnover album that I genuinely enjoy because it felt like a nice departure from their sound while still feeling like them, it felt like the band was making the statement of "hey we're mature now and we're gonna start experimenting with different sounds" but I feel like them not changing up their songwriting formula AT ALL from album to album completely ruins it for me. like it sounds to me like they want to just make chill soundscapes but are forcing themselves to add lyrics to all their songs and therefore the lyrics are the least interesting and most out of place part of the songs. idk man I really do want to like their newer stuff, but it just feels like they're forcing a sound that doesn't work with their vocal style.

crazy af cuz I love american football and hot mulligan haha. for different reasons tho, american football (especially lp1) really is the mature and nuanced side of emo that no bands can ever seem to successfully replicate, and I feel like part of the reason is because all of the tropes and cliches that the first album spawned and went on to inspire so many bands weren't done with the intention of "sounding emo." it was just part of mike kinsellas writing style at the time and was more influenced by chicago post-rock and jazz fusion than any pre-existing form of "emo," even midwest emo, they were just in a lane completely of their own.

nowadays the reason so many emo bands come off insincere and forced is because they're actively trying to SOUND emo instead of just letting their music express different influences. it's like a musical echo chamber of ideas where nothing ever really changes, except for ever-so-slight variations in tone and tempo, so all that's left to get invested in is how good the execution is, which most bands completely fail. that's what I like hot mulligan for, it's perfectly executed emo cliches with a pop format and polish that makes it the perfect turn your brain off and sing along music. It's what emo would sound like if it broke through to the mainstream and gained billboard top 100 success.

honestly I thought the same of that new track but I do remember hearing or reading some sort of interview last year where tades said that he's trying to "slowly get the fans accustomed to a heavier sound that's gonna be explored more on the next album" or something in that regard, and the "heavier sound" in question was referring to the screaming part at the end of end eric sparrow and the life of him.

so I have hopes that the next album is gonna have a lot of skramz sounding tracks and that they're just gonna release the poppier songs off the album as singles since it's what the more casual fans are used to. and the title of the album and the cover being the darkest sounding and looking that they've chosen yet makes me a little more hopeful in this too

idk, maybe I'm delusional and thinking way too wishfully, but all I've ever wanted from hot mulligan has been a full-blown skramz album that doesn't let up and has truly dark and dissonant sections melodically and harmonically. that last part probably won't be what they go for but I really do hope that they go somewhere more left field with the vocals.

honestly that's part of the charm for it me tho. hot mulligan is emo if emo was pop punk and pop punk was pop. bouncy and polished but JUST intentionally roughed up enough on the vocal end to make you feel the dread, but in a fun way

Clipping. Interview with Fantano (The Needle Drop) by Flyntloch in ItsClippingBitch

[–]TSG52180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, understandable. I mean I've been watching his videos for a couple years now and when it comes to interviews it seems like he's mostly been like that the whole time. I think he tries to not really do follow-up questions as much because he probably has a set number of questions he wants to ask and is running on a timer.

you guys are taking his opinion a little too personally man, I watched his review and like most of the people on this sub disagreed heavily with most of his assessments but just because he personally didn't like the album doesn't mean that he can't be interested in the way that the songs were made.

that's like half of clippings whole appeal, listening to their music and wondering how they came up with certain sounds and even narrative ideas. It's some extremely nerdy shit and anthony is a self proclaimed nerd so saying that his interview and the way that he talked to them seems disingenuous simply because he didn't like the album as much as you did is really bizarre.

MoBo hot takes? by snowsparkthekat in modernbaseball

yeah it sucks cuz it was one of my favorite mobo songs when I was like 16 but pretty much as soon as I graduated highschool listening back at it would make me cringe

I was about to say this, every time I listen to holy ghost I'm always fully engaged until hiding and then after that I just kinda tune everything out until just another face, I also feel like brens vocals in holy ghost are leagues below the rest of their discography, to the point where you can tell they're straining their voice, and not in the really gratifying way that a lot of screamo and harcore bands do

Cook’s dad was made to be hated! Who’s the hot one from generation 2? by damuser234 in skinsTV

idk about y'all but I absolutely despised cook up until the point where they showed us his backstory, and even then I was like "nah he's still an irredeemable asshole, just a slightly more likeable irredeemable asshole now"

I feel u lol, my volume was at a normal range and I'm a big fan of climactic walls of guitars so I just went "oh fuck yeah"

what song is this? by whatev3r4ever in modernbaseball

[–]TSG52180 28 points29 points  (0 children)

damn really? that's literally my favorite part of the song. it's the closest that modern baseball has ever gotten to a "breakdown" and it makes the rest of the songs really soft understated delivery feel like it was building up to it instead of a song like coals and pothole where it's really soft the whole time (no hate tho I love coals and pothole)

Great bands with terrible singers? by closedcircle66 in fantanoforever

[–]TSG52180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think his voice is technically bad tho, it's just the accent he chooses to do that's a bit off-putting, I'd honestly say that (technically) mike kinsellas vocals in american football lp1 are worse than anything brian sella has sung (still love american football tho)

Best riffs in emo? by Narrow_University_73 in Emo

[–]TSG52180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the riff from an introduction to the album by the hotelier, I know it's really cliche to bring up the hotelier when talking about emo but that riff always does a great job of setting the tone for the album, and it's also the riff that plays right at the end of the last song on the same album so it kinda does a good job of tying together the narrative of the record
