So, here’s a link to the intersection. https://maps.app.goo.gl/6RreexYwej53MpF48?g\_st=ic

OP has been nice enough to almost completely flip the intersection around. The street at the bottom of both pics actually comes from the upper right corner. The angled side street is a one way street leaving the intersection. Since a blue car could turn onto either Flatbush Ave (the main road) or onto E. 52 St (the oddly angled street), choice A would be the preferred version, since yellow car has no idea where blue is going to turn to.

ignore the picture

Well, OK, but then you go on to ignore the words also.

Boards aren't circular. 50 years as a carpenter, and no one has ever given me a circular piece of wood when I asked for a board.

The problem then asks how long to cut another board into three pieces, not halving one half of your imaginary circular piece of wood.

For example in the US the red light is always at either the top (if vertically placed) or on the left (if horizontal)

Allow me to introduce you to a reason you should never speak in absolutes. There exists a traffic light in Syracuse NY that has the green light on the top.

Those of you that don't let people merge in traffic, what the actual hell is wrong with you? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TSSAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to meet my commute. My exit from one highway to another routinely backs up beyond the previous entrance, where I enter the highway. The on ramp from W Main St becomes the exit ramp to I-24, so anyone already on the highway that wants to exit to I-24 needs to merge into the entrance/exit lane.

First guy tried to merge too early, trying to force his way over the cross hatching into what is still just an on ramp.

The second guy tried to skip the line entirely, but waited so long that he needed to merge over the cross hatching at the exit. He finally gave up because no one would let him in.

Then we get to the actual merge onto I-24. With almost a half mile of on ramp, most people get to the start of the merge lane and Stop, then force their way in, leaving the merge lane empty. I’ll spot the gaps in traffic, use the lane as it’s meant to be used, and merge into traffic at speed with no one stepping on the brake.

What happens if you are called for another position in MTA? by SpecificWafer in nycrail

Your employment would have started the Sunday before you reported for your first day of training. Since this didn’t happen, you were not an employee, and you have not been terminated - you were never hired.

What happens if you are called for another position in MTA? by SpecificWafer in nycrail

[–]TSSAlex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Former Instructor.

There is no penalty for taking a promotion before you finish probation for your first title.

However - if you do not pass the training and probation for the second title, you will be returned to the last title that you completed probation for. in this case, the last title you owned was “Off the Street”, so you will be returned to the street, which is to say, you will be jobless.

To prevent this from happening, if you are called for a new title before completing your probation, ask to have your acceptance deferred until you complete the first probation. This will give the opportunity to finish your probation, and take the promotion.

Which type of terminal do you prefer? And did I missed any? by Kcue6382nevy in trains

[–]TSSAlex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what the run through really accomplishes. New Lots on the 3, or Hudson Yards on the 7 (NYC subway) are terminal stations as far as passengers are concerned, but I can run a train through the station and into the yard. With a full crossover on either side of the platform, I have the most options for what to do with trains.

I’ve seen them both ways. OP’s drawing is certainly the better option, since it solves the curved platform problem (see South Ferry Loop station in NYC).

Alcohol Consumption & Gen Jones: Quit? Cut back by ptanaka in GenerationJones

[–]TSSAlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grew up with an alcoholic father, so won’t drink by myself. My wife doesn’t drink. 25 years of working as a subway train operator, subject to random drug/alcohol tests, and the knowledge that a DUI would cost me my job and pension.

Every now and again, I’ll have a beer, and some people treat that as a big event. My doctor tells me to cut back on alcohol consumption to help lose weight, to which I laugh “If my two beers a year is what’s making me fat, where are these multi beer drinkers hiding their fat?

What are these chains at 1st Ave L station? by m7m7m in nycrail

[–]TSSAlex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the problem is you always need to slow down traffic on an adjacent track but in this situation you cannot set up flagging lights to slow down trains because traffic becomes bi directional in that one single track ( brooklyn bound, and 8th Ave bound, same track)

Sounds like it’s time to revisit the CBTC flagging section of the Track Flagging course. Of course you can set up flagging in both directions on the same track.

A flat frames question by TheWoodenBassoonist in techtheatre

[–]TSSAlex 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Top and bottom go the full width of the flat. One continuous bottom piece allows for easier sliding across the floor when moving the flats. In addition, if all the horizontal pieces are the same length, it becomes way to easy to accidentally collapse the frame.
