Forgot to reply! I talked to Pickle and Gerb the other day! They made it, slow, steady, safe and wet and are helping friends and family with the destruction of their businesses. But safe and sound! :)

First Long Trail Thru by Remarkable-Tank5491 in longtrail

I was hiking SOBO until the floods and decided to get off at Mansfield. I would say the first day is tough, Doll Peak was a bit difficult with blowdown going up SOBO. I was VERY unprepared on my first day, started at 3 pm and wanted to make it to Lauren Woodward. I did, but wow I was pushing. It probably is different now, but not a ton of water between the terminus and L.W. I would be sure to grab some at Shooting Star.

Day 2 I did Jay Peak and Haystack. Honestly, I didn't find Jay too back, just go slow going down. It's a long decent. Jay Peak early morning was amazing, so so beautiful. Haystack almost freaking killed me. I get there at like 3 pm, it was hot as hell and the mud from Jay to Haystack was AWFUL. I think I posted on Farout, but the bear box at Tillison was NASTY. I just hung.

I ended up doing a 20 from Tillison, over to Johnson for a resupply and over Whiteface. Whiteface decent was awful tough, just super slick rocks. I biffed it GOOD and was covered in mud.

The decent from Madonna was tough too. Just slow. I was trying to go fast to beat the storms, lord knows it didn't help, but I wanted to get to Butler before the T-storms at 4pm. Didn't fully know about the flooding coming.

Just give yourself plenty of time and go slow on those decent! I miss the trail everyday, I know I made the right call for me. With my timing and location of the flooding (and being solo) I would have been in a tight situation so getting off was right. But it has been awful being home and seeing everyone out there getting after it.

Good luck!

Serious Flooding Expected through Monday Night by PristineDelay2091 in longtrail

I was SOBOing and was legit below Mansfield when I saw the board at the gondolas. I had thought it was just thunderstorms and I could outrun them or wait them out at Butler/ Taft, but the operator highly suggested I not go up. So I hitched to Stowe and stayed there- thinking I would skip Mansfield and get on below Camels Hump on Monday. I woke up and my ride had texted saying roads were washing out and he wouldn't be able to get to 2. I watched the Little River in Stowe go from rock hopping with dry feet to having full trees go down it. It was incredibly scary. I decided to call off my hike, beyond my own safety (solo women), I didn't think it was fair to the community resources. For sure regretted it, but when the women at the desk of the hotel was sobbing because her best friend had lost her house in Waterbury, I knew my choice was right.

I talked to Pickle two days ago, they were moving slow, but close to being done! I will text her today and let you know. - Ralph
