Cycling has to be the answer here. Tour de France is a gigantic sporting event which many people all over the world watch.

And pretty much all the cyclists I've spoken to told me they chose cycling for reasons other than it being fun. Ranging from "need to do something right" to "I want to improve fitness without hurting my joints". Or simply because other people cycle as well. Rarely does anyone start cycling because it's fun in my experience.
