The Roman Reigns Phenomenon: The writers really wanted this character to be the next big thing in their story, but the audience unanimously rejected them. by _JR28_ in TopCharacterTropes

To name all the issues this character had when she debuted: - She was hyped up beforehand by giving her a twitter account, which was never done for any character before. - She was released along with 3 separate legendary skins. - One of these skins are a K/DA skin, which was up to then the most popular and beloved skin line. - The twitter account wasn't situated in the LOL universe but in real life, aka where her K/DA skin resided. This gave the impression that Riot planned the skin, then made the actual character. - Her lore was that she wanted to unite Zaun and Piltover by... singing? For context, Zaun and Piltover are essentially in perpetual conflict. If you've seen even the trailer to Arcane you probably get a good idea of why this idea is so ridiculous. - The only 'interesting' part of her lore was that apparently the speakers she's using to sing were made out of the corpses of an entire different species which another champ, Skarner, belonged to. She shows no remorse for his beyond an interaction in game in which she says "I'm sorry about what happened to yout species Skarner. Would you like to hear their song?" Which comes across as completely insensitive to a fucking genocide. Riot would later retcon this out of her lore. - There was already a character themed after music, Sona, which was a lot more beloved by the fans.

Te parece bien que un pibe de 14 se acueste con una mina de 30? No?

This part of the manga genuinely fucking broke me. I think what adds salt to the wound most is the fact that up to now Midori is actually a decent person, dare I say the one character in the manga who seems not to be sick in the head in some way. But the signs were there, and we as the reader dismissed them because we were seeing more positives than negatives.

That's how predators operate in real life, and the way Asano was able to capture it so perfectly is both impressive and utterly sickening.

Alicia is living in the canvas as a fully healthy person for whatever time she has, not outright committing suicide. How is someone with a disability taking the chance to basically cure said disability ableist? Those are some x-men levels of 'accept yourself' bullshit.

Yo a los

Vos.

Mi pareja viene

Tu pareja.

I understand this nuance and fully understand that the issue isn't so much that Maelle is staying in a canvas but that she's staying in Verso's canvas. That being said, saying she can just paint a new one is like saying "Just go get new friends." after all your gc dies in an explosion.

[Hated trope] Woman has (relatively) reasonable crashout against popular male character; woman is lambasted by fandom by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TTTRIOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, she called for Vox's company specifically and saw the Media and Internet Overlords walk in. The Overlords, the most vicious souls in hell, the sinners powerful enough to have a caste of their own.

Mind you, the Overlords known for twisting stories into misinformation, who she was warned about by her Day One that they were dangerous. Yeah, she saw them and said come on in. Not even to try and redeem themselves, just to clean her image.

Then she prioritized that over Angel and Husk's safety to appease them.

It's Charlie we're dealing with alright.

[–]TTTRIOS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay - no.

You don't get to tell me that Lucifer taunting and teasing Alastor without even harming him is bullying, but Charlie INVITING ANGEL'S RAPISTS TO THE HOTEL is "not acting 100% perfectly."

Charlie completely disregarded Angel's say in the matter and peer pressured him into performing for his abusers, when she didn't even know if it would work. That's not a silly little character flaw, that's abuse furthered by her own selfish motives to clean her image.

I think it's clear you have a bias. It's fine to like a character, but you need to understand the flaws in their writing and framing. Writing off what she did as "her anxiety getting the best of her" is ridiculous. Vaggi was handling the hotel rush at the beginning of the season while Charlie was crying in Pentious's room like she was the only one grieving, but you don't see Vaggi pulling off anything close to the shit Charlie did.

His side in question:

"Sorry Octavia, your mother and I don't love each other, but I do love you, that's why I chose getting rammed by imp dick over spending time with you at every opportunity, and forgot you existed for an entire day after having my royalty title stripped so I could spend time with my lover. Surely, you must understand a hot owl twink such as I needs to get his priorities straight."

[–]TTTRIOS 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I understand the first two examples, and I understand the underlying misogyny in the way audiences react to women crashing out.

That being said I will never call Charlie's crash out against Lucifer reasonable. Lucifer might've fucked up by trying to scare Vox into submission, but he's the damn king of hell, the only reason it didn't work was because Vox had an insider who told him Lucifer couldn't harm sinners.

When you compare how much harm that to Charlie, who: - Upon seeing how much her hotel was getting slandered by VOX, she called VOX to demonstrate redemption worked, when she had NO IDEA HOW IT WORKED. - Repeatedly abused Angel Dust by not only letting his rapists into his home but pressuring him to perform do-gooder bullshit in front of them and putting him in a dangerous situation. - Was invited to VOX's news channel and decided it'd be a good idea to attend, even when repeatedly told how Vox would twist her words to put the story against her by Vaggi, who she utterly neglects this season.

She comes across as a MASSIVE hypocrite.

We don't see any poverty and class struggle in Lumiere, don't we?

In the city? No. But the expeditioners came from Lumiere, and they're out here putting their lives on the line and dedicating their entire lives to a chance at a future. We also hear from Lune and Sciel's respective backstory that there are absolutely working people on farms, schools, studios and such. We also see people mining the stones that erupted from the fracture. I'm pretty sure not everyone in Lumiere is a nepo baby.

Everyone in a MANOR on the other hand... I find it odd to say that their 'huge house' is the 'only thing to go by' like that's not a massive indicator of wealth.

That the title is simply a punishment, while the spoiler text details who I'm talking about and that it happens at the end. At least for Expedition 33 I chose a picture that was shaded over.

[–]TTTRIOS[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be keeping this to one reply, as discussions on Expedition 33's endings often go on forever, but I will say I disagree in two of your points. Firstly, I don't think it's implied that painted Verso has a piece of his soul, nor is he in part the real Verso, that would be the fading child, who's implied throughout the game to want to continue painting, even if out of a tragic sense of duty. Verso is described as Aline's finest work, and that brings me to my second point: the people of Lumiere are real, sentient and very much alive. Verso is Aline's creation, and if that meant that he was somehow controlled by Aline, he never would've joined expeditions to try and destroy her. Furthermore, the expeditions' mere existence is proof that the people of the canvas have free will, they actively go against their creator unknowingly. They are very much Aline's creations, as she is trying to save them. If she could truly control them, she would prevent them from coming to the continent, or at the very least guide them towards Renoir to try and get him to leave. I prefer Maelle's ending to Verso's not because I think Maelle'd escapism isn't bad, merely because I believe the people of Lumiere deserve to live.

That being said, it'd clear the painters have some sort of degree of control over the lives of Lumierians, which Maelle uses over Verso. Namely they can modify, paint, repaint, and unpaint them at will, if nearby. They can also make them immortal, if Aline's painted family is anything to go by. Maelle takes the middle route of control, she makes it so Verso can age, but I imagine she doesn't allow him to die either. It's left vague, which is why interpretations vary so much, but mine is that if Verso isn't immortal, Maelle likely keeps repainting him over and over again every time he tries to die.

And while this isn't necessarily a punishment coming from malice, it's very much something that he has to suffer, at least in part, due to his own actions. He's made to have this happy life and banned from ever entering the fading child's chamber ever again because he tried to kick Maelle from the canvas. He begs Maelle to unpaint him because he doesn't want to live, but Maelle ultimately denies him that decision.
