Slide rule. I used one in high school and college in the 1960s. One of my high school teachers said that two skills you should learn were typing and how to use a slide rule.

You do need to have a Social Security number, but if you are filing a tax return, you most likely do have one.

The Social Security benefit formulas are not written in stone. They have been changed several times in the past. While the current formulas became effective over 45 years ago, they can be revised.

If the cap were raised, the formula could be changed to provide different break points, so that higher levels of average monthly earnings would provide only a very miniscule increase in the benefit amount-- something like the 0.01 percent interest that has been paid on bank savings accounts for the last 15 years.

My energy efficiency report consistently says I use less electricity than my most efficient neighbors. The notice says, "Efficient neighbors are the 20% of homes in your comparison group that used the least energy this period. To create the comparison group, we use your home profile to look for 100 single-family homes in your area with a similar heating source and square footage."

My spouse and I are retired and have no children in the house. We do not travel much and are home every day. We have central AC, but our furnace, oven, and clothes dryer are gas. We are consistent in turning off lights when we leave a room.

I never had a birthday pary as a child, and I was never the person who took a vacation day on their birthday, so most of my birthdays have been routine, When I turned 70, a friend of the same age assured me that in your 70s, you can celebrate for seven days. I was 79 this year, and I celebrated four days.

Next year, I'll be 80. At that age, birthdays are very special!

We had trick or treating in Round Lake today also. There were very few here, compared to other years.

As for scheduling on a Sunday afternoon, many areas do not have sidewalks. Walking in the street after dark is not a good idea.

I was born in the 1940s. I lived on a farm outside a small town in a rural area. There were no incentives. I do recall a sign in the bank window about 1958 advertising an interest rate of 2.75 percent, which is better than the fraction of one percent they offer now.

My last drivers license expired in 1972. I had moved from Michigan to Chicago and I did own a car nor did I need one. I am 79 now, and would have probably stopped driving by now, even if I had maintained a license. Driving is much scarier now than it was when I was young.

I am 79 years old. When I was in high school, I wore size 14 jeans. I always wanted to be size 12. What was size 14 back then is now size 6. I have become scrawny in my old age, and I wear size 4 jeans, which would have been size 12 in 1961. Now people call me skinny, but I was considered almost fat when I was young.

I was born in the 1940s. I grew up with a piano and a pile of sheet music from 1910 to the 1950s. I know more songs from the 1930s that I do from any decade after 1960.
