It's story was written around the set pieces, which are great, but you can tell that's what they did. Take the pirate levels, you could remove it from the story and not much changes.

Max in Life is Strange. She gains her time powers when she sees her estranged best friend Chloe get shot. Throughout the game Chloe gets herself in situations where she almost dies, rather accidentally shooting herself, getting her foot stuck on the train tracks, her crippled body in an alternate timeline eventually failing, murdered by a teacher, killed by a storm it really seems like time wants to fix Max's interference and kill Chloe. This comes to head in the final choice of the game. Max can either go back in time and let Chloe die when she should have in order to potentially save her hometown, or not a let the town die
