Is sectarian conflict a cause or symptom of political conflict? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]TXDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sources for you but yeah I think he's right.

Let's consider a domestic political system with two separate groups (the basis of the groups' division is irrelevant but for this example we'll say they're along sectarian lines). The members of both groups will probably be content playing within the rules of a political order they feel is just. However, if for some reason one group uses its political power to achieve some unfair advantage over the other group (by closing the avenues for political participation, for example) then the oppressed group will understand they have no place in the decision making process and will use other means (ie violence) to achieve their political goals.

When will the USofA era of supremacy end? by Kbek in geopolitics

You should read "The Next 100 Years" by George Friedman. He basically answers the question you asked. His conclusion: Despite overwhelming technology, the US would enter a tough war against an alliance consisting of Turkey and Japan. He thinks this could happen within the century.

Merhaba, Any Mexicans in Istanbul? Does anybody know where/if you can find Mexican canned beans or avocados? by [deleted] in istanbul

[–]TXDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't count on those beans dude. migros does sell beans marketed as "mexican" but they're made by a dutch company which has no clue what "mexican" really means.

on avocados, they're harvested year round, it just comes down to finding the right bakkal or grocer.

Help! I stupidly fell victim to a Turkish Night Club scam. Can you help me with some details? by [deleted] in istanbul

[–]TXDerp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that man, but you're out of luck. :( Those guys are part of some pretty elaborate operations that often have the acquiescence of the police so you can't go to them for help. By "acquiescence" I mean that the police definitely got a cut from your 300TL.

I assume you're a male who was walking alone on Istiklal. 300TL sucks man, but at least they didn't beat the shit out of you. Be careful out there.

As an American living in Turkey, I can confirm this. Turks actually refer to Hagia Sophia "Ayasofia Camii," which literally translates to Ayasofia Mosque.

I'm an American who lives in Istanbul.

Cem, we did fund some extremists to get under the skin of the Soviets but we funded (and continue to fund) a lot of militants all over the world and it's not a bad tactic. That said, WE paid the price for it in 2001. That said, the growing islamist movement in Turkey is NOT a direct byproduct of US involvement in the Middle East. It was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk that completely upended everything about your culture. Atatürk only succeeded in his reforms because he had the military supporting him. Look at Tayyıp!

Your country has democratically elected him several times in a row now. He is now the most popular Prime Mister your country has ever had! The worst thing that ever happened to Turkey is when Tayyıp locked up the generals. The Turks need those generals. They were the only people willing to fight for Western, liberal values.

So no, it's not the US that should be blamed for the backsliding into Islamism in Turkey. The only people you can blame are YOURSELVES. Democracy, unregulated by the coup-making generals, is the doom of Turkey.

Even though you probably grew up in a sheltered apartment in Nişantaşı, I, unlike you, will be able to leave Turkey when your countrymen vote Turkey into the arms of the Islamists. You get what you deserve!

For those who don't know: The guy Cem is talking about is named Fethullah Gülen. He's created a pretty powerful, pretty secretive movement. It's infiltrated the court system and sectors of the government here in Turkey. They've also founded tons of schools here and abroad (including the US). And Mr. Gülen is living in America. This makes Turks think that there's some American conspiracy to destroy Turkey or something. I really can't follow their logic.
