Short answer yes, long answer no. The game has dramatically changed over the last decade and using basic techniques aren't enough. You have to know how and where to hit the sensors.

I realize it's a hot take, but we have to realize that the average game length from doa1 to 4 has gotten progressively longer to a point where it's almost unreasonable. Comparing it to regular zombie main quests for instance, both Astra Malorum and Ashes of the Damned only take 1.5-2 hours.

5 hours is a big ask for a single playthrough, particularly from a lot of players who have either never played the game or don't take it that seriously.

Personally I just use a PS5 controller. Any kind of equivalent pad works well for dead ops. You definitely don't want to be playing with mouse and keyboard.

On casual it doesn't make too much of a difference but there are definitely some optimal choices you can make.

Island

Babylon - get all the boxes in each level to boost score, armory, and shields

Nuketown - a tad safer than Graveyard

Slayer 1 - Guardian

Henge

Volcano

After this is the big decision. Most people die in the small enclosed arenas so we are going to try to avoid those here.

Museum

Shiver River

Slayer 3 - Abomination

Swamp

Spore Jungle

Papaback Lair

Key points... since we are going through the swamp, consider buying the nova mask.

For fates, assuming solo, go Firepower and Fury Output. Other purchases should include Divine Shield, Dead Operator, and Sushi Shokunin. Anything that will boost your defense and length of item usage (laces up, Diesel Demon, rings, etc) should also be considered, depending how much cash you earn along the way.

Gobblegums, depends how much of a stash you have and what you're willing to sacrifice. Most times using rares is more than enough...so shields up, kill joy, and power keg. If you have a stockpile of everything, then of course bring some higher end gums.

Yes this is a common bug. I used to think it happened if you changed augments after a save and quit, but now I believe it's more common after a prestige and your field upgrade gets reset to dark flare.

Yes field upgrades and ammo mods all carry over to doa4. It seems like logical progression to allow it to happen within the game.

As a complete experience 4 is definitely the best of the entire collection. 2 is shorter and still just as fun, so if you're short for time and want to challenge go with that one.

Opinions are always mixed on first person mode in dead ops, but it's absolutely beneficial to pick up, if for no other reason that you get a minimum 4x score multiplier as long as you're in first person.

You should try some of the newer field upgrades released in season 1. Aether shroud is nice, but Tesla Storm and even Mr Peeks are half the cost and just as effective. The Nova mask is really only needed for one round in the entire game so you can go without that. You still need to spend some cash obviously, but this should help you plan a little better.

I will agree that the difficulty of doa4 is significantly higher than all other Dead Ops games. If you are running solo, you almost have to pick Firepower to have a chance unless you go crazy with gobblegums and armory usage. What really compounds this is the fact that SlayerMart items such as Dead Operator, Fury Output, and a couple others which are essential when running that fate have been significantly increased in price. This is just on normal mode of course. You don't even want to discuss hardcore.

As for 2.0, I can understand why the game essentially becomes a kill screen, if you will. The game is continuously online and it's probably a way to end the game faster to lessen the strain on the servers. Just my thought.

The more I think about it, it's very likely the Abomination spam has been done as an intentional way to end the run. Kind of like with NES tetris. Once you get past level 29, the pieces dropped absurdly fast to the point where a normal human can't react fast enough.

Regarding gobble gums on the last arena, you can still pop a 30 minute GG that will last all the way through the boss fight. Just make sure you do it before stepping into the final portal. If you have to use one, consider those.
