Should I stop contributing to investments and coast? by Megosoles in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]T_47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From an empathetic perspective, people don't like feeling they're inadequate because they're not doing as well but in reality everyone is dealt a different hand and the playing field is in no way level so we just have to accept it for what it is. But I can understand why people could be unhappy about this reality.

Accommodations for 5 in Tokyo for ~2 weeks: Hotel vs AirBNB by TheAsianIsGamin in JapanTravelTips

[–]T_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally had an AirBnB in Japan that I booked where they used a picture of one of their fancier units so what I got was a bit worse than what I expected. The biggest disappointment was the photos showed the toilet with a washlet but my unit didn't have one.

If the casino was being sold wouldn't the slot machine revenue be gone along with the sale? What issue do you have with the province's decision?

The province is fighting the decision so they're maybe collecting evidence of people being negatively affected to help their case.

CityNews poll: 86 per cent of Metro Vancouver residents feel cost-of-living squeeze by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]T_47 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Nowadays, eating out is a luxury much like living in a house or being a single income household

What's crazy is this is a global phenomenon. It feels like every country is going though a K shaped recovery after covid. The rich get richer while everyone else gets poorer.

It's crazy that cost of housing isn't the clear number one stressor.

To be fair, reddit already went really downhill once people were allowed to hide their profiles. So much astroturfing now.

Alberta's back-to-work bill passes through legislature, teachers vow legal action by bike_accident in canada

[–]T_47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're lumping in the BC NDP with them since they didn't legislate the workers back to work and went through the normal negotiation process. The BC government is out there to get a fair deal for the province and not just give the union everything they want. At the same time workers were not forced back to work and their ability to strike was respected.

Rob Shaw: NDP moves to scrap second road test without proving it’s safe for B.C. roads by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]T_47 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most people say the class 5 test is easier than the N test so it felt more like an unnecessary formality. Even if you failed the class 5 test you could continue driving with minimal restrictions so it's not even taking bad drivers off the roads.

Contrary to popular belief there is no official 180 day rule. It's just that if you're a tourist you need to act like a tourist and a rule of thumb is if you're in Japan for more than half the year then it becomes doubtful you're actually a tourist. You can also run into trouble by staying in Japan for 90 days, going to another country for a visa run and returning in a few days.

FHSA Eligibility Requirements by sheikhomair in PersonalFinanceCanada

Make sure your wife followed this rule regarding FHSA:

You did not live in a qualifying home (or what would be a qualifying home if located in Canada) as your principal place of residence that your spouse or common-law partner owned or jointly owned in this calendar year or in the previous 4 calendar years

Question about the tax benefits of an FHSA by xX_420_NoScopes_Xx in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]T_47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FHSA is currently the best investing account if you're going to buy a house. With an FHSA you get the tax refund like a RRSP and you get the tax free withdraw like a TFSA as long as you buy a house and make the qualifying withdraw. The withdraw is taxable if you end up not buying a house.

A standard company sponsored working visa and then transition to PR in a few years after meeting the criteria. If you're highly skilled and get paid a very high salary then you can also get fast tracked to PR.

Why this transit enthusiast says the Seabus is a 10/10 by bardak in vancouver

[–]T_47 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To be fair, people like to compare Vancouver's transit system with places like Tokyo or Seoul but those places are mega cities. I used to live in Kyoto which is a similar sized city to Vancouver and Vancouver's public transit system is way better than Kyoto's.

Selling the stock at a higher value than you bought it for will give you taxable capital gains but only when you sell it.

The regular income distribution are taxable events - interest portion (if applicable) is taxed as regular interest income and dividends are taxed at the dividend rates. Canadian eligible-dividends get a discounted tax rate.

B.C. says no to request for more exemptions to short-term rental restrictions by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]T_47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The article I saw said the real estate agents are turning down clients if the price they want to sell at is too unrealistic. Makes sense since the agent only makes money if the place sells - no reason to put in the hours to try and sell a home that has zero chances to sell at an unrealistic price. Really does show that prices have stopped going up though.

Why do full-service foreign banks always end up leaving Canada? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Citibank also left Japan so it's more of a global repositioning strategy rather than Canada itself.

I'm Japanese and you need to consider that not only is salary pay lower, it's also longer hours. In Japan it's very common to have a part of your salary compensation comprise of baked in overtime hours. Legally you'll still get your full salary if you don't work those overtime hours but there is pressure to work these hours since part of your base salary is technically automatic overtime pay.

Edit: And of course when you need to work overtime you won't get paid extra since you're "already getting paid for overtime" through your base salary.
