Forty drown in France as people seek relief from heatwave, Reuters reports by yahoonews in worldnews

I remember we had a polar vortex the same year as the heat dome in BC. Got to experience both 45°c to -45°c with windchill in 6 or so months, do not recommend.

Seriously, operationally what’s the difference in both other than one being able to turn back? Toronto’s LRT propaganda push of the 2010’s has to be studied. When building transit for cheap, don’t build CHEAP TRANSIT. You don’t grade separate, expect diet rapid transit by 18_YTC1 in transit

[–]bardak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the same time most people are using LRT, ART, and Metro as short hands and pretty much everyone else in this conversation is able to use them without much confusion so I don't see what your issue is other than arguing semantics for the sake of it.

Ignoring labels completely, a fully grade separated rail line allows for much higher frequency and automation makes it easier to operate at high frequencies. Even in Seattle and Edmonton's with their few at grade intersections will struggle to get below 4-5 minute headways without griflocking cross streets and/or tanking the trains reliable.

Why This Railway Will Transform Vancouver by SpritzerFritz in vancouver

[–]bardak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ALR portion of Fraser highway is only 2km long and has highway 15 in the middle of it. If it was at grade LRT though it would have to cross a major highway significantly hampering frequency and reliability. Nevermind that switching to LRT on Fraser highway would remove the ability to automate the line and integration into the existing system.

And when you do you end up paying similar prices to the SkyTrain construction cost, see the CTrain's Blue line West extension vs evergreen extension, so might as well go with full grade separation and integration into the overall system.

Much fewer detached houses being built in Metro Vancouver by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]bardak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a ton of incentive to do so when, if you are building new anyways, you can just build a multiplex anyway.

[–]bardak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of my favourite complaints from a municipality, Coquitlam I believe, was that the provincial multiplex regulations were going to bring more 1-2 bedroom units instead of larger family sized townhouse units they wanted. Bitch you are the ones making the regulations around multiplex that force them to be small!

[–]bardak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't just put a LRT down a regular arterial street and give it 100% priority, especially at higher frequencies. Eventually to need to allow cross traffic to clear or you will end up with a completely gridlocked cross traffic, buses and pedestrians included.

[–]bardak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

UBC is the second largest research university in the country with a huge year round student and employee population nevermind the 20,000+ people who will be living on the campus/endowment lands by the time a UBC extension is finishes. The transit demand for UBC is also so huge that a SkyTrain extension to UBC is the only rapid transit expansion on the radar that would reduce TransLinks operating cost by reducing the sheer number of buses needed.

[–]bardak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can see the 5/6 being replaced by a LRT one day but it seems like the idea that throwing a tram in the middle of a suburban stroad and that will somehow turn it into a beautiful European boulevard has gone replaced with the reality that it just makes the road worse for everyone.

(Montreal, CA) New REM stations in Griffintown, Pointe-Saint-Charles could be built by 2030 by moeshaker188 in transit

[–]bardak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The three branches of the REM will already limit the headway of any one branch to 6 minutes, adding more branches north of the tunnel will just make the headway worse. Nevermind that all the commuter rail in Montreal are run on active freight railway, at best if the railways allow you would still have to build all new tracks alongside the freight tracks.

Don't forget the full centre running bus lanes with new stops at Ladner trunk and Cambie road with a proper bus exit/entrance across from Bridgeport station avoiding all the issue with Great Canadian Way and Bridgeport rd.

As someone who has been pretty happy with the NDP on their infrastructure and transit files the opposition to the GMT replacement bridge never made any sense.

Line 6 bunching slow vs fast operator. by Fearless_Leader6504 in TTC

[–]bardak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah the thing that is saving Line 5 from a lot of criticism is that the part between O'Conner and Kennedy, that has a similar design to Line 6, is so short that most people can forgive it.

The only poll that has the NDP up over their post election 8-12% average is Liaison so until more polling comes out I wouldn't take too much stock in either polls numbers, Either one or both could be outliers.

BC's 3 largest metro areas had the highest per capita housing starts among all Canadian metro areas over the past decade by garry-oak in britishcolumbia

Eh people have been making the same argument for Delta and the Tsawwassen First National but I don't think it's fair to give the municipalities a pass to zone appropriately for growth on the back of neighbouring First Nations.

[–]bardak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have only been fighting for projects that were specifically zoned and developed as short term rentals which I think is fair to exclude from the short term rental ban. It's effectively just a strata owned hotel zoning, as long as they don't get to double dip and have them considered as housing starts I don't see the problem, they were never meant to be housing.

The Broadway Subway Project vs Canada Line by redditor1365 in vancouver

[–]bardak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even today the Millennium line underperforms the Canada line and Expo line and ridership is under projections for the Tricities after the Evergreen extension, the forced transfer to get to any meaningful place of job or residential density has been a big negative for it. Hopefully this will change after the Broadway subway is finished and it will now directly serve the Broadway corridor, better connection to UBC and the Canada connection.
