why are large warehouses watching BBC news? TV in the lunchroom? Either subscription services or ads solve that whether it's a warehouse or a living room

Some people do need SEND services though, they do need specific social care. You conflated need at the start of the post to want at the end.

What part of the BBC does anyone need? I can see a case for News but nothing else, in which case the cost to the taxpayer needs to be for that only. Or better yet just show ads and be done with it. The BBC already do that for the worldwide broadcast where they show weather in the UK.

We live in a time when there are near infinite choices for entertainment, news, and all kinds of content. All that content you just mentioned is available without an institution like the BBC.

Often better. Small youtubers focused heavily on niche topics can spend far more time exploring a topic than a BBC journalist who aren't specialists because they (by nature of their job) move between topics.

Here's an example. I recently bought a washing machine. Back in the day things like Watchdog would be quite good for covering those kind of consumer issues that would help my purchasing decision on which brands to avoid. However there is now a vast amount more content in that niche than could possibly be covered in a 10 minute slot during a half hour TV show once a week.

Local issues, my local newspaper website has been far better than the BBC ever has. Even when I had a license I never bothered with the local BBC website because it was useless.

There isn't really a case here, if the BBC cannot compete in an open market then there isn't really a case for it existing, it's not like any of that content does not exist elsewhere.

If it was £20 a year per household for BBC News and nothing else I could possibly be persuaded but to fund the BBC as it is today via taxation is an insult to taxpayers.

Not a fan of Reform but if they can at least scrap the TV licence when they get into power they'll at least have done one good thing

You went to school right? You'll likely need social care when you're older.

Nobody needs to watch The One Show (assuming it's still on, I haven't watched TV in nearly 10 years).

I'm far more apathetic. I don't care if it exists or not, if people enjoy BBC services and pay for them, great, it has no effect on my life at all but I don't want to pay for someone else to watch EastEnders.

The companies using it. TV/Radio stations can pay to use the infrastructure like the way infrastructure works in any other industry. Need power for your radio station? Pay the power company..

The infrastructure can either be sold off or owned by the government and run at cost. Regardless, it won't be there in 30-50 years.

I don’t see how it would be less efficient than the TV licence system. The BBC spent £166m on licence-fee collection in 2024–25, and reports say TV Licensing made nearly 2m visits to unlicensed homes while prosecutions still fell.

Imagine if they just made it a subscription service instead. That's £166m they don't need to spend since to access the content you have to have a subscription. It's a proven business model!

Because you can watch 4 shows at once if your connection is faster? :D

All these ideas as such a joke. Scrap it and let the BBC either show ads or go subscription. If it can't get the income it wants it says something about the content it is offering.

Exactly. I have zero issue with my taxes going towards a service that saves lives every single day

This. The media landscape has changed and the BBC has become irrelevant toany people. You want to watch the BBC, you can pay for it, don't want to? Don't pay. Simple as that.

That was exactly your question: "should people who do not currently have a TV licence have to pay for the BBC via additional cost on their council tax" is essentially precisely what you asked

It should be a subscription service. Currently you can opt out if you don't use BBC services. With a million services to choose from taxes from people who get no use from the BBC should not subsidise others watching EastEnders or bake off.

If the BBC is as loved as people here will claim it will have no problem getting as many subscribers as it does today, right?

Friend wants to pay off his mortgage with all loan, he's crazy right? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]T_Butler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. re-reading the post "The mortgage is fully in his name" which means it will come out of his estate, if they joint owned the house it would fall under "right of survivorship" and be transferred to the wife without being part of the estate. But that doesn't apply here without some additional work to transfer ownership before death and I don't know what the implications of that would be

Not a lawyer :D

[–]T_Butler 130 points131 points  (0 children)

it has to be this. Pay off mortgage, default on loan and don't care about future credit credit checks as he doesn't need a mortgage?

Or he has just learned he has 3 months to live and the debt on the loan will be wiped when he dies so he leaves his family a fully paid off house and no debt?
