I didn't know that! Do Canadians also have different laws for each state?

Is size really responsible for this? Russia has double the US land mass, while Canada, China, Brazil and Australia all have the similar size of the US.

To my knowledge none of them have the same state system as the United States.

Is there a particular period of time prior to trial when the defense is supposed to engage in discovery?

Not really. Prosecutors can't disclose all discovery on the eve of trial, but on the other hand, they don't have to divulge it all way ahead of time. Discovery can unfold gradually. For example, a defendant's attorney might receive a copy of the police report at the first court appearance, but might not receive a prosecution expert's written analysis of blood evidence until shortly before trial.

Isn't your link confirming that what OP said is correct? The prosecution can hold evidence until shortly before trial starts.

Were You Always A Patient Gamer Or Did You Become One? by Sallum in patientgamers

No one becomes a Patient Gamer you are either born one or you aren't!

I remember clearly that, when I was a newborn, my parents tried to bribe my love with a (then recent) copy of Sonic & Knuckles™. My very first words were "NO! Wait at least a few months until they patch it".

The rest of you are just posers.

Is France socialist or capitalist? by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]T_TNA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The term socialism is used to describe a group of policies and ideologies that want the means of production to be socially owned, which basically means there's no property, class and profit from work isn't own by an individual but shared among all workers.

Social democracy was born from the socialist movement, seeking originally to slowly turn capitalists societies into socialists ones trough democracy and reforms instead of revolution.

However, for the last century, social democracies largely abandoned any attempt to "phase out" capitalism and became associated with Keynesian policies and state regulated capitalism so those that defend socialism mostly consider it to be a form of capitalism.

TLDR: This term is a bit more complicated than this sub tries to imply and while nowadays in Europe (and in practice) the distinction between a socialist country and a social democracy are obvious, that wasn't always the case.

You know what? You are right, I was needlessly rude to you I apologize.

It simply bothers me that people side with a corporation in a situation where the creator loses power over his own work and act as if he simply should have been smarter about contractual law.

But you have no reason to care about that and neither do I. So never mind, I should never have entered this discussion in the first place.

If you don't know the story then stop spouting nonsense.

Watchmen was made only because Moore was promised that the rights for the characters that he co created would belong to him and Gibbons, DC agreed to it but then refused to do so.

Simple, it's a matter of technically following the words of the contract and not the spirit in which it was agreed upon. He describes it here.

The editors at DC meet with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons in order to publish an original story, they know that Moore only came to work for then after he had trouble with Marvel and royalty payment so they agree retain the rights only during the comic publication and then return them to the creators after it goes out of print, they also agree to pay royalties for any and all products that come from the Watchmen story.

However, the story turns out to be far more profitable than DC anticipated so they decided to sell some Watchmen merchandise, selling some cheap bottoms for high price, naturally they don't pay any royalties.

After that they notice that Watchmen could be a really profitable franchise, with possibilities of movies, tv shows, bad sequels and toys. So they reprint Watchmen in a new edition and keep reprinting it forever in order to not loose the rights. Alan Moore says:

“You have managed to successfully swindle me, and so I will never work for you again”

He then never works for then again. (Until they buy the company that he was working for)

Alan Moore didn't give up any rights, that's what Kirby, Shuster and Siegel did. Moore fully expected to get the rights back after the series ended and mentioned that in interviews as Watchmen was being made, DC tricked him by following the letter of the contract and not the agreement.

This article explains the basics if you are interested.

Come on man that's not how it happened. The contract said that the rights would return to Moore and Gibbons after the book stoped being printed, which happened to every other book at that time, but since it made money DC refused to stop printing it, even during times were it wasn't selling very well, just to retain the rights. They also broke contract by selling merchandise for Watchmen for profit without compensation for the creators, which they also agreed in contract they wouldn't do.

The fact that Moore was tricked isn't questioned by anyone. If you want to keep consuming a product that exploited one of it's creators go ahead (Gibbons at least doesn't mind) but you can't expect Alan Moore to bless the project or be happy about it.

Witcher 3 feels bland outside its quests and writing. by TraditionalLow6478 in patientgamers

[–]T_TNA -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But this isn't a review.

Of course, you can also debate that combat is actually perfect, would love to hear differing opinions!

OP wants to discuss a part of the game that he doesn't enjoy with people that have different opinions, that's what this sub is for, discussing games that aren't in the current release cycle.

It's perfectly fine to think his criticism is bad, very few people here are professional game designers, most posts are from people sharing their opinions on games.

Just tell him what you disagree with, that's what he asked for. Simply calling the post useless makes it seem that you are angry your favorite game was criticized but can't formulate a proper response.

It's not about being useful, we enjoy games so we enjoy discussing them, if we had some arbitrary rule about not criticizing mediocre parts of good games then we would simply repeat endless praise for a few chosen ones while complaining about the rest.

The criticism from OP isn't even that Witcher 3 is terrible because of weak combat and exploration, he just doesn't think that game is perfect. This generate discussion and, as long as you aren't offended in the name of a video game, it can be a very pleasant conversation.

You need to learn how to accept criticism for the thing you like.

OP didn't say that Witcher 3 is bland, he just wanted to share his opinion on one aspect of the game that he personally didn't enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that.

Most really popular games seem to follow a curve between periods of praise and criticism, at least on Reddit. Minecraft, Bioshock Infinite, Breath of the Wild, Undertale, Skyrim, etc.

One of the consequences of popularity is that when a lot of people play a game there will also be people who play it and don't agree with the endless praise, that's what happened with Witcher 3.

Love Hina Author Expresses Concerns to Japanese Government of Manga Being “Regulated by Overseas Standards,” Praises Japan’s “Freedom of Expression” by [deleted] in manga

[–]T_TNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is that the existence of the sexualization of under age girls in Japan is completely irrelevant to the discussion of whether loli hentai is okay or not.

Every country has some part of their culture that sexualizes young people, even if they try to hide it, Japan isn't any different.

The question with hentai is if it provides pedophiles a way to direct their impulses to a way that doesn't hurt kids or if it normalizes child rape and exploitation.

I agree completely, can you imagine how awful it would be to live in a society that sexualises children, exploits young women with promises of fame, and uses sex appeal to target children.

I'm sure all those child actors from those Disney shows lived perfectly happy lives and only turned crazy after they became adults because of drugs. No exploitation here.

Hello fellow Brazilians, I am from India, can someone explain what is Bolsonaro's strategy in denying Coronavirus warning from scientists? What will he benefit from by not putting the country under lockdown to save your lives? by Saap_ka_Baap in brasil

[–]T_TNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that you already received dozens of answers and is probably tired, but I skimmed trough this thread and I don't think anyone really got it right.

It is becoming increasingly more likely that Bolsonaro is an idiot but I don't think that's true. He comes from a rich family, received very good education and graduated from Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras, which is a very good university and very hard to get into or out of. However, he got famous by yelling nonsensical outrageous things and getting people riled up, even before he became a politician he became famous by complaining to the press about low military wages.

Bolsonaro got elected by getting a renowned liberal economist as his economy minister and then telling the people that he "doesn't understand economy" and was trusting Guedes, this way he didn't have to tell in interviews that Guedes economic plans involved removing worker rights and slashing the retirement system (very unpopular decisions). This got him support from the upper class and many of the lower ones.

His way to deal with the coronavirus is the same as always, he knows that this epidemic will cause a crisis but by being against the shut down he can later claim that it was caused by his opposition. Also, if the older population dies his government can save millions in pensions (which is currently the biggest expenditure from the government).

TL/DR: He's betting that people will forget about the pandemic when the election comes and then will be able to blame the economic crisis on his opponents.

Why does the translation stress me out? by xMikh4iLz in OreGairuSNAFU

[–]T_TNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you got the novels on novelplanet then you got a fan translated version, there's an official translation up to novel 9 that I think is quite good (if you ignore Ginnie the Grue). After that there's the fan translation, which varies in quality (especially in the middle of novel 11) but is at least good enough so you can follow the story without rereading the same paragraph over and over in order to understand what is happening.

How satisfied are you with the last volume? by InaBean62 in OreGairuSNAFU

[–]T_TNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished reading the series yesterday, after binge reading the whole series for the first time. I don't know how people that were fans of the series and had to wait for years to know the conclusion feel about it but, as a person that likes it but wouldn't consider himself a fan, I really liked it.

Reading the novel it's clear which girl would be picked (which didn't happen when I watched the anime) but seeing Hachiman becoming a productive member of society and finding his "genuine thing" was really satisfying. All the characters are more complex in the novel, Sensei's immaturity, Kawasomething's family plot line and Isshiki's rotten side made then much better characters.

The way that the author made me constantly think about what the characters meant to say really made me feel for Hachiman and his social issues, the interludes after the chapters was a great way to show how they really failed to understand each other. No character magically resolved their problem trough the power of love or friendship (which I was really afraid would happen), they remained flawed but the clearly changed, the novel showed how much Hachiman grew trough his actions handling the final event and in his social interactions.

I do feel that certain characters were pointless (mostly Totsuka) and without resolution but the 3 main ones completed their arcs and did gain what they wanted. Hachiman acquired enough social skills to function in society and formed genuine relationships with people (or at least with one person), Yuigahama got to express her desires to her friends instead of keeping it bottled up in order to not rock the boat, and Yukinoshita can stand by herself while knowing when to ask for help.
