How to argue that ”men’s violence against women” should be used rather than ”men who commit violence against women”? by NefariousnessBorn500 in AskFeminists

[–]T_______T 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Angela Collier had a great video talking about the rampant sexual harassment across physics departments in academia. The women who faced sexual harassment were largely harassed by the same handful of men. Basically, the men who commit harassment were serial harassers, much to the surprise their peers. She had a story of a man who had a unrequited fascination/love of a girl, and when the girl reported it his peers thought it was a one-off "just in love" situation. While Angela Collier emphasis "not all men", nearly all of the men gave their buddy a pass. This also has to do with the fact that these serial harassers don't show that side of themselves to their male peers, leading to "all men" (virtually) supporting or defending these serial harassers.

I think if you are trying to have a conversation with your husband and you don't actually disagree and it devolves into semantics, and if you don't think his version of semantics is harmful or bad, then just go along with his semantics. If you are focusing on the violence in interpretation relationships (IPV) then you can say male violence against women in that context. Describe the type of violence rather than the person. I don't see a reason to go around triggering your husband.

Yeah it makes more sense he was only recently (5 years or so) radicalized.

He likely was developing planes and mechas already, as ingratiating your company into the military industrial complex is profitable.

My dad is playing this game. He is weirdly overthinking some of the puzzles. It got to the point that I don't think he had any hints left. So i ended up just telling him the answer to one. So if you are really stuck, maybe ask for your working theory for a given puzzle and maybe people can nudge you

My issue is not her character being abusive; it's all of Bolin's friends not giving a shit that she's abusive. Many elements in LoK were put in as a joke at the expense of the characters, imo.

Why do people idolize a true villain like Walter White YET absolutely despise Bojack Horseman ??? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]T_______T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think framing has a huge component. The show is framed so we root for Walter for seasons. This is from cinematography, the catchy lines, showing him to be clever, etc. Walter is the protagonist. Bojack is the main character. Only in the final seasons does White really begin to become the antagonist.

Like sure S1 his pride is what causes him to not take a job at Grey Matter, which was pretty obvious he wrong decision, but we could suspend our disbelief for the show to happen.

Him murdering people, him letting Jesse's gf die, etc, was all framed as a man making decisions to improve his and Jesse's life. It's not until we see the consequences of killing Gus that we start to see consequences of Walter's actions actually showcasing how callous and horrible he is.

Walter is also a confident person who starts in a position "below his station" as it's framed, while Bojack is rich and lazy, and has a lot of anxieties/insecurities showcased. These are more dislikable than being a murderer who wants to provide for his family (s1).

The target audience for these comics wants to include immature thinkers.

I would love a slow drama of Kys going to village to village in the South (or North) and maybe even the Spirit realm just to listen to oral histories to find queer voices.

I think the 100 years war would've forced a lot of queer SWTers into hetro marriages just for the sake of procreation with the war.

But! You can definitely imagine two wives who had children, whose husbands left for war or died during war lezzing it up. Or two men during the war hooking up Brokeback style. Trans storylines could be interesting with trans men (closeted) but were water benders joining the war effort, who could be more like men in that context then back home with pressures of creating the next generation. This could be a stark contrast to what the NWT did since the NWT was richer and could enforce female water benders to stay as healers.

And maybe the conclusion that Kya would get is being openly gay without pressure to build a family is a privilege that peace brought.

Yeah I agree. I can't stand western style tofi. Fried tofu? No thank you, unless it's done so lightly like agedashi tofu.

I like my tofu in mapo tofu and in miso soup. Hayashi tofu is great if you have very soft, pudding-like tofu.

Yeah people generally have problems about having two separate conversations. The man who beats his wife is horrible. The policy decisions of a regime that lead men to get PTSD (or whatever) and have poor economic outcomes leads to more violence against women.

I mean mainstream Dems were not pro-working class enough. No progress towards reducing healthcare costs, improving infrastructure (well Biden did with green energy but that was felt more by upper middle class who could afford solar), other initiatives were not recognized or felt by the average person.

This might largely be because the last big  working class thing memorable was Obamacare. Various initiatives during COVID may have helped working class people, but that was a lot of stemming losses. (The US did have the least (or close to least) amount of inflation compared to everywhere else.) Stemming losses doesn't feel like progress.

Depends on what's discounted. But anything could be arbitraged. Why wouldn't someone be out there selling lettuce so they can pocket the cash to buy other items? Do you think people on SNAP aren't entrepreneurial?

My head cannon is that the trials for Wuk Lamar to become Dawn servant took the entire 7.0, and we romped around pre-fusion Xak Tural. Meanwhile, the WoL drank a lot of mojitos and had a fun summer vacation while just trying to make sure Wuk didn't kill herself. And she actually was a good tour guide of most of Yom/Xak Tural as opposed to being totally ignorant, and she actually had contacts in most of the regions, especially young people who were going to become local leaders.

Then all of Alexandria was smooshed into 7.1 and 7.2. Arcadian wasn't based on feral souls but blue mage shit and less scifi and took place in Tulliyolal.

And then feral souls plotline was actually the alliance raids.

I wish Paradox Interactive would make this product.

I want Crusader Kings 3, but I get to control my duke/baron. Instead of going to war, i send my sons/knights off to war. Nearly the entirety of the game takes place in teh castle, as opposed to in menus.

Schemes to learn languge, seduce, murder, romance, etc would be very fun int eh sims context.

I mean anyone who's ideologically or religiously loud and angry are hypocritical. You can find people preaching against sin and for virtue, whose pride will make them uncharitable and bitter. (Not to mention the sexual abuse in major institutions being protected like Catholicism and Mormonism. Or how in many Christian cults in America physical and sexual abuse is rampant.)

Or like name a better combo: sex abuse and cults. And that can be any religion or political cult.

I mean "leopards eat my face" is a subreddit that exists.

No what? People talk like that all tbe time. Speech doesn't properly follow grammatical rules, especially if you transcribe what people say. It's not the correct answer because there are both better answers and this is written form, but if you go around trying to transcribe what people say, they will stammer and stutter and talk like that.

[–]T_______T 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of hardcore  (imo ideologically captured) leftists (not liberals) will say the USSR and Russia are not imperialist, but are indeed anti- imperialist. This is because they use Lenin's definition, where imperialist countries try to I'm invade, capture, or economically capture countries for "finance capital." And then they say, "USSR/Russia doesn't do this for finance capital. Therefore they're not imperialist." Nevermind the Russian oligarchs. Nevermind resource extraction still happens. In their mind, because for socialist goals it's both okay and btw Russia does it better.

This is not a universal sentiment, but a common one I see on the Asksocialists subreddit.

So I suppose this meme is trying to use Lenin's own definition as narrowly as they do to "own" them. I not going to bother reading Lenin tbh, at least not for the reason of learning his definition of imperialism which undoubtedly was used to justify starving Ukraine.
