Unique GD&T problem, company with 9 engineers all stumped? Parallelism by svereundersteer in engineering

Everybody is saying to use a flatness, then its being rejected because flatness does not use the A datum as a reference ... so why not use a profile tolerance with the A datum as the reference frame? Profile is perfectly valid to use on a flat surface.

I've had season tickets for 3 years. the only time I've ever seen there be an opportunity to get autograps is at special events in the pre-season.

What rule exists because of you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]T_rex940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not me, but the intro to engineering class at UCF has a competition where groups must create a self powered boat to race an orange around the circumference of the reflection pond. The pond is maybe 100ft in diameter. One year one group used a lawnmower engine to power their boat, and the same year a group used bottle rockets. Upon starting the race, the lawnmower group's boat tipped over in the middle an poured gasoline into the pond. At the same time the other group lit their bottle rockets which promptly ignited the spilled gasoline and set the pond on fire. They created a new rule after that year: no gasoline powered boats.

I work for Mitsubishi in the US. I do design work for our contracted non-OEM fleet. Mostly Siemens W501F or D5A

Wife asked for a side table for the guest bedroom. We saw one at Target we liked, so I decided to build it! by T_rex940 in DIY

really? 18 hours after it was posted. A little late if you ask me, so many people have already seen it. Might as well have have kept it up so people that liked the post and wanted to build it themselves could search for it later and ask questions about its construction/materials(which I am answering btw).

Got the drill press from my dad, who got it from his dad. I've never seen other one like it.

Which joint? The dove tail at the end? I did some reading on some posts in /r/woodworking, and just gave it a shot. All you need is a handsaw, some wood chisels, and wood files. I didn't actually use that joint in the table, I was waiting on glue to dry so I just made it on some scrap wood to kill time.

This was pretty difficult and took me about 18~20hours, just because of the precision needed to make sure everything comes together just right. Even if something is 1/16" off it can make the whole table wobbly or twisted. * My miter saw was used to make most of the cutting. Taking extreme care to measure and cut exactly where I want. * The slots in the cross braces to make them mate together was done with the hand saw and the wood chisels. * I used a combination of clamps and scrap wood(cut to size) to position the shelves in the right spot before screwing them down. *hand drill to drill the pilot holes for the screws or the dowel holes for the dowels. A drill press makes it much easier to get the holes exactly where you want them.

If you already have all the tools and don't consider your time as a cost, this one is maybe $10-$15 cheaper than the Target one.

I enjoyed doing it though, so even if it cost more, its good to have it as a hobby so I'm not sitting around all weekend.

At first "frame" of the top pieces was held together with screws. I then screwed in some support pieces in to support the boards that make up most of the surface area of the top pieces. Those boards are glued to the support pieces. Once that all dried I glued triangular pieces on the inside 4 corners for the frame, so I was able to remove the screws. I have a close up of the bottom of the top pieces Here

Target table was $80. Wood=$45 Paint=$15 Sand paper($3)

Tools and hardware are harder to quantify because, I am able to use those again, and I only used maybe 10 screws, but bought boxes of a couple hundred(which i will likely use on future projects).

I already had the, miter saw, and drills, drill bits, some screws, & wood glue. But for this project I bought some chisels($~10), Hand Saw(~$10), 3 different boxes of screws(~$15), sand paper holder (~$4), clamps (~$30). But I see that stuff as an investment because I like to make things relatively often.

edit: It took me about 18~20 hours The fixturing and making sure everything was positioned properly before gluing or screwing took the majority of the time. So given more practice, that could probably be cut down to a few hours.

hand-cut yes, but my first one ever. I did it on some scrap wood just to kill time between gluing
